What is the definition of cult film? What is the definition of underground film? I grew up in an era where there were VHS tapes, DVDs and you had to work hard to find it. There was no swipe left or swipe right if you wanted to watch Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" or "Meet the Feebles". I got bootlegs of John Woo movies through tape and DVD trading. Before there was Pirate Bay, you would have to go to horror conventions and meet up with other collectors. My exposure to what you would call cult or underground films was networking with a lot of like-minded people. As a film fan now, I have access to everything at my fingertips. Do I want to watch John Waters? I can easily download his entire filmography with a streaming subscription. What is it like nowadays to be a cult or underground filmmaker? With cult or underground films - you're coloring outside the lines and that's why it can't be a studio product. The director of this film has completely disowned it and to this day refuses to talk about it. Filming had begun even though the script wasn’t finished. A studio that wanted a big Hollywood Summer blockbuster, but got a grimy, grounded horror film instead. Within it’s franchise, it is the most controversial entry amongst fans. There was even a cartoon spin-off pilot for this movie. What went wrong? James Cameron considered this film “a slap in the face”. The lead actor begged that their character be killed off. The director of The Exorcist and the star of The Godfather teamed up for this unconventional film that was more Slasher Movie than Alfred Hitchcock. Originally Rated Triple X, it didn’t look like this film was coming to cinemas any time soon. This movie was heavily protested due to it’s depiction of the Gay Community. Theaters were not willing to show this film due to it’s dark and perverse nature. This is the curious case of a Gay Slasher that rocked the nation. How do you make a sequel to one of the most profitable and iconic horror films of all-time? The original director didn’t return to this film because he thought the script (and I quote) “sucked!” Speaking of which, the script was written no less than five times. And even then it was being re-written as they shot the film. The star of this film had to read cue cards because he showed up every day completely drunk. To this day, it is one of the most critically panned horror movies ever made. The premiere screening of this film was so disastrous that it almost incited a riot amongst the audience.
