Coming Soon: Minority Leader Mitch McConnell - 1/6/2021 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:43

On this Quick News episode, we talk about the HUGE wins in the Senate runoffs in Georgia, where both Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff won. We also talk about the disgraceful actions of the Pennsylvania legislature, and the equally horrid decision made by Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley in the Jacob Blake case. Coming tomorrow: comments on the domestic terrorism at the US Capitol today. It's really not an exaggeration to say that the world that we woke up to yesterday morning vs. the world that we woke up to this morning are two completely different worlds. Not only did one Democrat win in Georgia, but they ended up winning both Senate runoffs, giving Democrats control of the Senate (because it'll be 50 R's and 50 D's when these two are sworn in, and VP Kamala Harris will be there to break most of the ties for Democrats). I really never expected them to win, and it's incredible when you think about what this means going forward. Let's stop beating around the bush and get right into it.  GEORGIA The race has already been called for Raphael Warnock over current Senator Kelly Loeffler (aka QAnon Kelly aka KKKelly for her embrace of conspiracy theories and white supremacy). They haven't called the race for Ossoff yet (as of the time of this recording), even though most of the votes are absentee votes from heavily-Democratic counties. I get that they want to be careful, but at some point, being cautious turns into being stupid and ignoring the facts of the situation.  So, I'll give you the quick Wikipedia facts about Georgia's new Senators (and I literally am just reading off of Wikipedia, it's not like this is any great reporting).  In the 1990s, Warnock served as the youth pastor and then assistant pastor at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York (sorry if I'm butchering that church name). While Warnock was there, the church declined to hire workfare recipients as part of organized opposition to then-mayor Rudy Giuliani's workfare program.  In 2005, Warnock became senior pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, which is Martin Luther King Jr.'s former congregation. He is the fifth and the youngest person to serve as Ebenezer's senior pastor since its founding. This says that Warnock has stated that he will continue in the post while serving in the senate, although I'm not quite sure how that'll be possible.   In March 2014, Warnock led a sit-in at the Georgia State Capitol to press state legislators to accept the expansion of Medicaid offered by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He and other leaders were arrested during the protest. From June 2017 to January 2020, Warnock chaired the "New Georgia Project", a nonpartisan organization focused on voter registration.  In terms of his political positions, Warnock supports expanding the Affordable Care Act and has called for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. He also supports increasing COVID-19-relief funding. A proponent of abortion rights and gay marriage, he has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood. He opposes the concealed carry of firearms, saying that religious leaders do not want guns in places of worship. Warnock has long opposed the death penalty, having advocated for death row inmate Troy Davis, who was executed in 2011 for killing a police officer despite evidence that supported his innocence.  Warnock will be the first Black Democrat in history to represent a former Confederate state in the United States Senate, and the first Black senator from Georgia, period. That's not for lack of trying, it's just because that's literally how the system is designed in Georgia: so that Black citizens don't have any political power. In fact, the runoff process that Warnock just won was actua

 UK Lockdown and Georgia Showdown - 1/5/21 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:37

On today's Quick News Daily Podcast, we finally learn the motive of the doctor who destroyed COVID vaccines in Wisconsin, and we have information about the lockdown imposed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Also, we go over issues you might be having when you try to track your COVID stimulus check on the irs.gov website, California Gov. Gavin Newsom floating new ideas to help distribute the COVID vaccine, and our good night on Twitter against Sen. Josh Hawley. Listen on your favorite podcast player: https://www.rebrand.ly/QuickNews ----more---- WISCONSIN DOCTOR Well, when the news outlets confirmed that the pharmacist who intentionally damaged those COVID vaccines was, in fact, Steven Brandenburg, it didn't take long to find out his motivation behind what he did.  According to Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol, Brandenburg "formed this belief they were unsafe." Gerol did not offer any more specific information on why Brandenburg was convinced they were harmful, but he did start to explain the problems going on in his life. He explained that the 46-year-old is in the process of divorcing his wife, and he said another Advocate Aurora Health employee reported that Brandenburg had taken a gun to work twice. The story gets more complicated when we start to talk about what might happen to Brandenburg in terms of criminal punishment.  Wisconsin Public Radio reports that the DA couldn't submit proof to the court that the drugs had been damaged and that therefore a crime had been committed. Gerol said that "apparently the only way they can discover that or tell us that is if they test them. It's unknown how much time that will take". There is a crime known as attempted criminal damage to property, Gerol said, and that "would be a misdemeanor and that would seem to apply at some point in time in the future." But Brandenburg's troubles with the law don't end with the state of Wisconsin: The FBI and U.S. Food and Drug Administration are also investigating. As for what happens with Brandenburg in the immediate future, Judge Paul Malloy set a $10,000 signature bond for Brandenburg and ordered him to surrender all his firearms to sheriff's deputies, not to leave Wisconsin, not to work in the health care field, and to have no contact with Aurora employees. Brandenburg was released on Monday  Brandenburg had already surrendered some weapons to police at the request of his ex-wife, said DA Gerol. Court records Brandenburg's former wife filed for divorce in June 2020.  UK LOCKDOWN AND ASTRAZENECA Well, it sounds like Britain is having a heck of a time with the coronavirus at the moment, whether it's related to the new strain of the virus or not. It's gotten so bad that Prime Minister Boris Johnson reimposed measures that were in place during the first lockdown last spring, including closures of secondary and primary schools to everyone except the children of key workers and vulnerable children. I read that sentence from the CNN article so many times, and I still don't even know what that means. Why would they be sending vulnerable children to be around more kids? Do they mean vulernable to the virus, or kids with a bad home life? Someone from the UK can help me out on that.  He also added that this means it will not be "possible or fair for all exams to go ahead this summer as normal," and alternative arrangements are being put in place. Yeah, I'm just saying, I think that's the least of their problems right now. Don't worry about the exams, man.  People will be allowed to leave their homes for limited reasons like shopping for essentials, exercise, and medical assistance. Johnson also said people could still leave home "to escape domestic abuse", which is definitely an important thing to include (although I'd hope that if you need to flee because of domestic abuse, you wouldn't wait for the government to say you can do so. Just go!).  International departures are now limited to those who have "a legally permitted re

 Goodbye, 2020 - 12/30/2020 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:45

Today on our final news show of the year for Quick News Daily, we discuss a wide variety of stories. We talk about a ceiling fan recall, the new COVID variant being detected in the U.S., and why disinfecting surfaces might not be that necessary to fight COVID. Additionally, I discuss the Nashville bombing suspect and the slow vaccine distribution process here in America. Check your ceiling fans if you bought any of the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor fans between April and October of this year. The defective products were found in these four finishes: matte white (UPC No. 082392519186)    matte black (UPC No. 082392519193)    black (UPC No. 082392599195)    polished nickel UPC No. 082392599188) If you have one of these defective fans, Contact King of Fans for a replacement at (866) 433-1291, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, or by email at MaraRecall@KingofFans.com. ----more---- Find where to listen to Quick News: https://www.rebrand.ly/QuickNews  Sources: ⦁ https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/29/politics/vaccine-rollout-behind-schedule/index.html ⦁ https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/article248144590.html ⦁ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/home-depot-fan-recall-blades-spin-off/ ⦁ https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/12/29/951269665/first-u-s-case-of-u-k-covid-19-variant-found-in-colorado ⦁ https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020/12/28/stimulus-check-trump-money/ ⦁ https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/12/28/948936133/still-disinfecting-surfaces-it-might-not-be-worth-it ⦁ Defective Fan Tutorial ⦁ https://www.npr.org/transcripts/950360046 Transcript: OPEN Today is Wednesday, December 30th, and actually, this might be the final news show of this year, our first year of this show. What an up and down 8 months it's been. Well, I'll try to close it out strong with today's show. We've got everything from updates on the Nashville bombing suspect, ceiling fans, the mutated COVID virus from the UK showing up in America, and a couple of other things (if we're lucky). Let's get caught up right away.  CEILING FANS I want to start with a story that might be affecting you right now without you even knowing it. In fact, I'm going to ask you to check your ceiling fans if you've installed any between the months of March and October. Why am I asking you to do this? Well, there has been a recall issued for 190,000 ceiling fans sold by Home Depot because the blades could spin off while in use.   The type of fan is the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor fan, and they were sold in stores and online from April through October of this year for about $150. About 182,000 of the fans were sold in the U.S. and another 8,800 were sold in Canada. King of Fans, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based distributor of the product — sold exclusively by Home Depot — said it had received 47 reports of the product's fan blades detaching. At least two consumers got hit by a blade. In addition, four instances of property damage were also reported. King of Fans says to stop using the fans immediately, and to check them for signs of defects. If you have one of these fans, inspect it right away. If you notice "blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body" during your inspection, you should contact King of Fans for a free replacement. The trouble does not impact all of the Mara 54-inch fans, according to the company. They've offered a link to a YouTube video showing consumers how to determine if a fan is defective and needs to be replaced. That link is in the show notes/description so you can watch and know what you're looking for.  If your fan does have this defect, you can contact King of Fans for a replacement. I have their phone number and email in the show notes/description as well.  I have to take a swing at our British and French listeners: maybe you've been tuning out if you're from there because if you just heard "king" and "possible beheading", you probably just t

Mostly Accurate Transcript:   OPEN Today is Tuesday, December 29th; welcome once again. Today, we have some stories that I wanted to get to yesterday, but the show was already running a bit over 20 minutes, so I figured I'd just save them until today. So, we'll be talking about the Brexit deal from last week, a pretty crappy move by GoDaddy.com, and some news on the fiasco with the stimulus deal in Congress. Let's keep right on rolling this week and get caught up.  GO DADDY Let's start by talking about this horrible, tone-deaf initiative that happened to employees of GoDaddy.   About two weeks ago, GoDaddy employees got an email from the email address "happyholiday@godaddy.com". The email read:  "2020 has been a record year for GoDaddy, thanks to you! Though we cannot celebrate together during our annual Holiday Party, we want to show our appreciation and share a $650 one-time Holiday bonus! To ensure that you receive your one-time bonus in time for the Holidays, please select your location and fill in the details by Friday, December 18th.” So, about 500 GoDaddy employees filled in their information and sent it back. A ton of folks are struggling through this pandemic, so this $650 would really mean a lot to them. Well, sadly, this wasn't real. A couple of days later, they got another email from GoDaddy's chief security officer, Demetrius Comes, that said:  “You’re getting this email because you failed our recent phishing test. You will need to retake the Security Awareness Social Engineering training.”  As I mention quite frequently, I'm in school for IT, so I've learned quite a bit about how to keep information safe on the internet and phishing scams and all of that. Honestly, unless there was some type of warning a couple of weeks before this, I think I probably would have filled this out too. I think the only things that would be suspicious would be that they're asking you for your information, and that the email was from "happy holiday @godaddy.com", not "happy holidays". I haven't learned this yet in school, but frankly, if they have "@godaddy.com" in their email address, that would probably mean that the hackers already got into the GoDaddy system. At that point, they'd already have almost everything that they wanted, and the company would have a lot bigger worries than employees giving information.  The emails were brought to the world's attention because three employees decided to forward them to The Copper Courier, who first broke the story.  That story also says, "Despite the company surpassing 20 million customers this year and reporting 'record customer growth', the company laid off or reassigned hundreds of employees during the coronavirus pandemic, including in Arizona, Iowa, and Texas." That always drives me up the wall when companies say that they're having such a great year, but as an employee, you look around and half your department is gone, or your benefits are getting cut, or something like that. As we learn more and more about Ronald Reagan, there are many things to hate about his presidency, but this stupid idea of "trickle down economics" is

I'm hoping you were all able to have a safe holiday, but that you were also able to connect somehow with family or friends, because this COVID fatigue and loneliness is real, make no mistake about it. But wow, we have a ton of stuff to catch up on. Obviously, we'll take on the big stories of the bombing in Nashville and COVID updates, as well as some stories that may have gotten lost in the shuffle but are still important. We don't have a second to waste, so let's get caught up! NASHVILLE Now, if you know the show, you know that I hate how the traditional news follows their unwritten rule of putting all of the crime and disasters first; the "if it bleeds, it leads" rule. I still hate that rule, but at the same time, I can't always just ignore those stories in favor of something else because that's my own rule. So, while I am starting with the Nashville story right away, I want to do that because I want to set the record straight. If these things just sit out there, then that's when conspiracy theories start to creep in. Or, maybe those theories are right and the official story is wrong. Whatever the case may be, I want you to have the facts as we understand them today.  The official story, according to the Nashville chief of police, is that police officers responded on Friday to a report of shots fired when they encountered the RV that was projecting a recorded warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes. Police evacuated nearby buildings and called in the bomb squad. The RV exploded shortly afterward, creating a massive fireball and explosion. This took place on 2nd Avenue and Broadway. Upwards of 40 buildings were affected. Also, we have reporting from police that the bomber was playing this song before the explosion. *DOWNTOWN BY PETULA CLARK* Now, maybe it's my age, but that's just a song that the DJ plays at roller rinks. It sounds fun and upbeat, and it is, but when you actually listen to the lyrics, it's basically saying you should go downtown if you're lonely because it'll make you happy, which I think shows this guy's mental state, but we'll get into that in just a bit. Some of the more unofficial eyewitness testimony and amateur experts online help to color in some of the gaps, but I really want to emphasize that most of this has not been said by officials.  The real question to me is whether this guy was a professional or an amateur. The weird thing about the whole thing for me is the gunshots beforehand, and why there were multiple. I'm thinking it was one of three things: 1) the bombers trying to commit suicide and shooting

 What Does A New COVID Strain Mean? - 12/21/2020 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:58

On this episode of Quick News Daily, I go on a very deep dive into the possibility of this new strain of COVID in the UK, what it could mean for the vaccines, and how it's different from the regular coronavirus. Personally, I celebrate the commercial version of Christmas, which is pretty much just the food and gifts, not the religious part on my end. But Christmas, or whatever, might come early for you because I finally designed that new merchandise! I also wrote another article that’s available on Medium, so stick around to the end and I’ll have more info on those items. Otherwise, it seems to have been a relatively normal weekend (at least normal for 2020). Let’s get caught up with the stimulus news, COVID news, and more!  STIMULUS Well, much later than pretty much everybody thought, Congress has apparently reached a new deal on a COVID relief stimulus package. They’re trying to brand this as relief for small businesses, unemployed Americans and health care workers, as well as more help distributing the COVID vaccine.  The actual text of the bill wasn’t available yet at the time of this recording, but Democratic House and Senate members released what help was going to be in the deal eventually. So, here’s what we know so far:  The deal is worth $900B total, which was way less than the 3 trillion that Democrats were trying to push for.  Direct payment checks will be sent out again, which will be about $600 for each child and adult.  There is $284B for forgivable loans from the Paycheck Protection Program and $15B for “live venues, independent movie theaters, and cultural institutions”.  In addition to the usual unemployment benefit, if you qualify for that, you’ll get an extra $300 per week over what is usually available.  $25B for rental assistance and to extend the moratorium on evictions.  $82B for schools and colleges, mostly to help them reopen safely.  $7B to increase broadband access, which will help those in rural areas. That has to be tough when everyone is doing virtual work and you barely get reception.  Lastly, there’s a tax credit “to support employers offering paid sick leave”, because of course there is. Apparently, there’s nothing more American than giving companies free money for doing the right thing (coming from the same people who will rant for 20 minutes about “kids these days and their participation trophies”).  The bill itself hasn’t passed yet. There are still a lot of procedures that need to happen, but Trump’s reaction on Twitter could speed things up or slow them down dramatically. I’ll make sure to keep you updated.  COVID So, we are slowly learning more about the possible new strain of COVID that’s spreading through the UK at the moment. One early number that’s being thrown around by experts is that this new strain could be up to 70% more transmissible than regular COVID. They’re also saying that this could explain why London and Southern England are seeing such a crazy amount of spread.
