Pop Psych 101

Summary: In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse. PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. Coming off an intense episode about eating disorder, Ryan and Mike jump right back into to the intensity with an episode about addiction. Ryan, having spent 6 years, previously as an addiction specialist, has since moved on from that field for many reasons, but his knowledge in this area is broad and his insight is a very important look into the therapist side of the addiction recovery process.  #14 - Anorexia Nervosa in Netflix's To The Bone (Movie) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:13:53

Eating disorders--a subject that hits close to home for Pop Psych 101. Mike, gives a little background to his personal experience with an eating disorder, while Ryan explains that sometimes these symptoms can pair with mood disorders as a way for a person to gain some control where they might feel as if they have none.  Ryan and Mike go deep into "To The Bone", a Netflix special, starring Lily Collins, based on true events surrounding a battle with Anorexia. To The Bone, is as intense a look into treatment as any pop culture they've looked at to date, even if the ending is a little too packaged for Ryan's taste.  Ryan and Mike answer listener questions about bulimia, binge eating disorder, and go over what an anorexic person would look like in real life, as far as symptoms.  #12 - Chronic Embitterment in The Muppet Christmas Carol (Movie) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:30

Continuing our streak of Christmas and Holiday episodes, Ryan and Mike break down Scrooge Syndrome / Chronic Embitterment, otherwise known as Post Traumatic Embitterment Disorder. To keep things light, they look at this Mental Health issue through the movie "The Muppet Christmas Carol". The psychology behind Charles Dickens famous character is fascinating, and important to understand and empathize with anyone in our lives that reflect this attitude. They talk a little bit about their new found reach to the nation, after signing on to broadcast on Dash Satellite Radio. Another segment of "Over-analyzing with Ryan" reveals deep theories about the possibility of Charles Dickens being the Father of modern talk therapy instead of Sigmund Freud who is widely considered to have pioneered psychoanalysis. Quotes from the Movie: Ghost of Christmas Present: If he's like to die, he better do it and decrease the surplus population. Tiny Tim: God bless us everyone. Ebenezer Scrooge: It's all humbug, I tell you. Ebenezer Scrooge: There's more of gravy than of grave in you.   Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!
