Pop Psych 101 show

Pop Psych 101

Summary: In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse. PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. If we really want to normalize the conversation about mental health, then we need to start having real and normal conversations. S1 (Ep1-51): Ryan+Mike S2 (52-62): Ryan's Solo Career S3 (63+): Ryan+Hayley

Howard Hughes Jr. was an American business magnate, investor, record-setting pilot, engineer, film director, and philanthropist, known during his lifetime as one of the most financially successful individuals in the world. He first became prominent as a film producer, and then as an influential figure in the aviation industry. Later in life, he became known for his eccentric behavior and reclusive lifestyle—oddities that were caused in part by a worsening obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and chronic pain from a near-fatal plane crash. Today we take a look at Martin Scorsese's vision and Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of The Aviator.  Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!  + Ryan Goes Rogue - A Lesson in Ethics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:12:05

Covering the podcast The Shrink Next Door and questioning the ethics of the real life psychiatrist, Ike Herschkopf, had us wondering what Ike and Marty's sessions looked like. So, this week's bonus episode, Ryan and Mike role play a therapy session, and Ryan tries to infiltrate Mike's life. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog!  #40 - Ethics of The Shrink Next Door (Podcast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:41

When Journalist, Joe Nocera, realized that his Hampton's neighbor, Ike, had suddenly moved, he knew things were off. However, there was no way he could prepare himself for the story he was about to uncover. The man that Joe thought was his neighbor's maintenance man, Marty, actually turned out to be the owner of the property, and Ike, had been Marty's Psychiatrist for 30 years.  This week we look into the ethical violations that Ike had to betray to find himself in almost complete control of Marty's life -- We look at this through Ryan's eyes, as a Therapist, and wonder where he thinks this relationship got off the rails. We also look at this through Mike perspective as a patient, who seems to understand Marty's gullibility.  Up Top: We cover a news story. Netflix has just announced that they have edited the suicide scene from season 1 of 13 Reasons Why. Mike thinks it's a marketing scheme, and a bit late. Ryan says, it can't be too late.  Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!  + Can Ryan Disarm Mike's Bullying? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:09:02

Ryan has an example of how to handle yourself if a bully is making fun of you. He offers two examples: How to, and, how not to. Mike wasn't the best person to do this exercise with.  #39 - Bullying and Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:09:42

Up Top: Ryan challenges Mike with a news story about mystics and psychics. A larger percentage of people are seeking out this kind of "Magick" than are going to therapy or to a psychiatrist. Mike offers that if it finds the person peace or healing, then he has no problem with it, but Ryan argues that some people are being swindled for money and should go the route that has science to back it up.  The Show: Bullying: The definition of bullying How to spot a bully How a bully is made How to treat a bully The motives of a bully What bullying does to others emotionally Science finds literal brain changes is bullying victims Synopsis: This week we look at the character Billy Hargrove in Netflix's stranger things. Billy moves to Indiana, and isn't so happy with his new hometown. Through the course of the series we see Billy make fun of, attack, threaten and demean the kids around him. After his body was taken over by the Mind Flayer in season 3, we find out that Billy was abused as a child and is broken.  Bullying is often thought of as a normal part of growing up and going to school. Tell that to a victim of bullying. Now, in the age of social media, bullying is the worst it's ever been, with kids unable to escape the threats from their classmates.  + Over-Analyzing The History Of Stigma | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:11:10

Bonus Episode: This week's main episode talked about a time-traveling alien, and that got us thinking. How was mental-illness, especially diagnosis that present symptoms of hallucinations, looked at throughout history as compared to the present. Was it ignored? Accepted? Ridiculed? Met with fear? Ryan does some major over-analyzing and we make some guesses at those questions.  Find Us: See our website We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!  #38 - Fighting Intergalactic Mental-Illness-Monsters in Doctor Who (TV Show) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:09

Trigger Warning: Conversations About Suicide We had a member post a beautiful clip from, of all things, the TV show Doctor Who. The episode is called "Vincent And The Doctor", and features heavy themes of Vincent and his battle with Mental Illness. We took a long look at Vincent and the era he found himself in. The people of his time weren't equipped with the knowledge of what he was going through mentally, instead of understanding he was labeled a "mad man". He was also known as a very lonely man, maybe his status in the world added to that feeling. Vincent Van Gogh killed himself at age 37 with a gunshot wound to the chest.  Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!
