CreaturePasta Episode 15 - Lycanthropes - Season 1 FinaleWelcome to CreaturePasta, an incomplete field guide to creaturepasta critters, gaming beasts, and horror monsters, brought to you by Digital and Dice.  The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, existing in many variants, which are related by a common development of a Christian interpretation of underlying European folklore developed during the medieval period. From the early modern period, werewolf beliefs also spread to the New World with colonialism. Belief in werewolves developed in parallel to the belief in witches, in the course of the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland (especially the Valais and Vaud) in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century.Other Digital and Dice Podcast Links:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/digitalanddiceTwitter - https://www.twitter.com/digitalanddiceWebsite - www.digitalanddice.comPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/digitalanddiceDiscord - https://discord.gg/5RHcPVW See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

CreaturePasta Episode 7 - Russian Sleep ExperimentWelcome to CreaturePasta, an incomplete field guide to creaturepasta critters, gaming beasts, and horror monsters, brought to you by Digital and Dice.  Russian researchers in the late 1940s kept five people awake for fifteen days using an experimental gas based stimulant. They were kept in a sealed environment to carefully monitor their oxygen intake so the gas didn't kill them, since it was toxic in high concentrations. This was before closed circuit cameras so they had only microphones and five inch thick glass porthole sized windows into the chamber to monitor them. The chamber was stocked with books, cots to sleep on but no bedding, running water and toilet, and enough dried food to last all five for over a month.Other Digital and Dice Podcast Links:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/digitalanddiceTwitter - https://www.twitter.com/digitalanddiceWebsite - www.digitalanddice.comPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/digitalanddiceDiscord - https://discord.gg/5RHcPVW See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

CreaturePasta Episode 6 - The KrakenWelcome to CreaturePasta, an incomplete field guide to creaturepasta critters, gaming beasts, and horror monsters, brought to you by Digital and Dice.  The kraken is a legendary sea monster of giant size that is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. Authors over the years have postulated that the legend originated from sightings of giant squids that may grow to 12–15 meters (40–50 feet) in length. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the kraken have made it a common ocean-dwelling monster in various fictional works. It was first described by the Dane Erik Pontoppidan in 1752–53.Other Digital and Dice Podcast Links:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/digitalanddiceTwitter - https://www.twitter.com/digitalanddiceWebsite - www.digitalanddice.comPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/digitalanddiceDiscord - https://discord.gg/5RHcPVW See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

CreaturePasta Episode 4 - The WendigoWelcome to CreaturePasta, an incomplete field guide to creaturepasta critters, gaming beasts, and horror monsters, brought to you by Digital and Dice.  In Algonquian folklore, the wendigo or windigo is a mythical cannibal monster or evil spirit native to the northern forests of the Atlantic Coast and Great Lakes Region of both the United States and Canada. The wendigo may appear as a monster with some characteristics of a human, or as a spirit who has possessed a human being and made them become monstrous. It is historically associated with cannibalism, murder, insatiable greed, and the cultural taboos against such behaviours. The legend lends its name to the controversial modern medical term Wendigo psychosis, described by psychiatrists as a culture-bound syndrome with symptoms such as an intense craving for human flesh and a fear of becoming a cannibal. In some Indigenous communities, environmental destruction and insatiable greed are also seen as a manifestation of Wendigo psychosisA horrific creature formed by necessity driven hunger gone mad.In the vast expanses of the Boreal Realms, there exists legends of the indigenous people. Legends to explain ideas greater than themselves. Legends to pass lessons of life from elder to minor. Stories of heroes, and cryptids battling in a never ceasing battles of good and evil.Of these legends, one of the most fearsome of these cryptids is the Dreaded Wendigo. A spirit of cannibalism that possesses the weak of will. When tribesmen are isolated in their homes, trapped by the deep snows and treacherous cold, and the scarcity of food seeps deeper into the soul, the ravenous nature of the Wendigo begins to take hold.Other Digital and Dice Podcast Links:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/digitalanddiceTwitter - https://www.twitter.com/digitalanddiceWebsite - www.digitalanddice.comPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/digitalanddiceDiscord - https://discord.gg/5RHcPVW See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

 Episode 2 - Draugr - CreaturePasta | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:33

The draugr or draug (Old Norse: draugr, plural draugar; modern Icelandic: draugur, Faroese: dreygur and Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian: draug), also called aptrganga or aptrgangr, literally "again-walker" (Icelandic: afturganga) is an undead creature from Norse mythology. The word draugr can be traced to a Proto-Indo European stem *dʰrowgʰos "phantom", from *dʰrewgʰ- "deceive". The Old Norse meaning of the word is a revenant. The will appears to be strong, strong enough to draw the hugr [animate will] back to one's body. These reanimated individuals were known as draugar. However, though the dead might live again, they could also die again. Draugar die a "second death" as Chester Gould calls it, when their bodies decay, are burned, dismembered or otherwise destroyed.Draugar live in their graves, often guarding treasure buried with them in their burial mound. They are animated corpses—unlike ghosts they have a corporeal body with similar physical abilities as in life. Older literature makes clear distinctions between sea-draugar and land-draugar.Other Digital and Dice Podcast Links:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/digitaldicepodcastTwitter - https://www.twitter.com/digitalanddiceWebsite - www.digitalanddice.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
