Voices at play show

Voices at play

Summary: "Voices at play" is an actual play podcast, created by the team behind the project of the same name. Our goal as a group of diversely marginalised people is to fund, promote and create content around games written and designed by marginalised creators. Tabletop Roleplaying Games, or TTRPG are a type of game designed specifically for people to get together and tell stories with. These stories can range from the magical worlds of tolkein-esque fantasy to the grittiest noir thriller. It's a hugely diverse genre that is dominated in the popular narrative, by a tiny handful of overwhelmingly big names. Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder and Shadowrun are the ones you've probably heard of. These games, however good they may be, are designed to tell very specific kinds of stories. They can certainly be adapted to tell others, but there are hundreds of games out there that are specifically designed to tell different stories! Voices at play aims to use them to do so. The "Voices at play" project goes beyond simply focusing on games though; we want to focus on the people behind them. As with a lot of classically "nerdy", "niche" hobbies; the face of TTRPG is largely lead by straight white men. In a genre so heavily dominated by the big names at play, we want to work to create space at the table for everyone. To do that, Voices at play focuses on games by marginalised creators and our project is run entirely by marginalised people. We want to demonstrate the value in diverse, inclusive gameplay and introduce you to as many new games and creators as we can along the way. Our podcast and ongoing efforts are funded entirely by our generous supporters. You can learn more about our project, through our website https://ttrpg-voices.com or our patreon page https://patreon.com/VoicesAt where you can pledge, for as little as $1 a month, and join our ever growing community, helping us to raise our voices.

 Interstitial – Game Four : Part One | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:33

This week's game features a preview of the setting provided as part of the game as sold, in the world of Eta: In an effort to show off a little of the game beyond the character playbooks and rules/guides, our GM Atlas opted to run through a scenario they built using the setting that operates as the base of Interstitial and the players chose to play a mix of characters both original and pre-existing to demonstrate that this works too! It's conflict time! This episode showcases an example of combat for the first time.If you've only ever experienced combat through the likes of D&D or you've never played or heard a Powered by the Apocalypse system being run, this should play out extremely differently to your usual expectations. Combat is succinct, always narrative focused and moves the story forward! This is also, just a great example of how combat and character action can change things to the unexpected! We hope you enjoy the exciting conclusion to this one shot as much as the players did! The start of this particular adventure will be deeply familiar to anyone who has ever played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Em, our GM for this one shot, takes their players to the land of Hyrule where the Princess Zelda is awaiting with a mission to save their imperilled land. Leaning heavily into the spirit of Interstitial, Em successfully composes their own take on the "world of Hyrule" which NONE OF THE PLAYERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH. This produces some really fantastic dynamics, proving that even in a fictional setting your players don't know the way you do, as a GM, taking inspiration from (or even lifting directly) your favourite fictional places, is an easy recipe for success.   For a lot of people, playing TTRPGs is about coming up with new characters then seeing what stories you can tell with your friends. Despite the emphasis on ‘Living out your wildest fan fiction’ (which might be offputting, to some), Interstitial’s diverse range of playbooks allow for all sorts of characters to be made for play, including completely unique and original characters. In Episode two of our run of Interstitial one shots, join Alexis, Sarah, Pidj and Thai as they take an altogether calmer approach to gaming. Alexis takes her players (as a group of young teenager characters) to an original setting in which their school vacation takes an altogether unexpected turn.  Who and What is Voices at play? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:19

Hello dear listeners; I'm Ray, one of the many voices behind Voices at play, my pronouns are he/him and I'm here to introduce you to who we are and what we do. Our project, which is organised on a not-for-profit basis, aims to fund, promote and create content around tabletop roleplaying games, designed and produced by Marginalised creators. This podcast is produced as part of that content and features the crew behind the project, a group of incredibly diverse people from a variety of marginalised backgrounds. More than half of our revolving cast are People of colour, several are Members of the LGBT2QIA+ community, we also have people with disabilities, both physical and mental, fat people, thin people, you name it and there's a chance they're represented here. Many involved come from a number of those groups, all at once. As you may have realised, representation is at the core, of what we do. If you'd like to learn more about the individuals behind the voices, check out the members page of our website on ttrpg-voices.com. So what are tabletop roleplaying games? The one you are most likely to be familiar with, is D&D or, Dungeons and dragons, to give it its full title. You won't hear us playing that one though. Our goal is to make it possible for marginalised creators of less known work, to reach a wider audience and by extension, become more prevelant! Tabletop roleplaying games are a form of collaborative, narrative fiction, governed by a specific set of rules. Most often, you'll sit down with some friends, create characters together based on the rules of your chosen game and then start telling a story together. It's that simple! This might be in the form of a pre-written adventure or scenario with plot hooks and goals to accomplish. It might simply be something that someone or everyone at the table comes up with on the fly. As you can imagine, this can lead to a lot of chaos. What do you do when you encounter conflict? When the outcome of someone's decision isn't something they can simply decide? That's where the rules of the game come in, often focused around dice rolls and a player taking the helm as your game facilitator, often referred to as a GM. These introduce aspects of randomness that take your stories places you never could have imagined. At the heart of them, tabletop roleplaying games are an experience and a very human one at that. The people you play with, their lives and perspectives. All of these things will influence the outcome and flow of your story. The Voices at play podcast is gameplay and round table discussion focusing on a number of games, created by marginalised people. Each new game system will see the groups reshuffled, with new players taking on the role of GM to demonstrate the ways in which different people and different games influence both play style and story together. So that's us! That's what we're here to do and I hope that sounds interesting to you. We are Voices at play, making space at the table, for everyone. This podcast is brought to you by the support and generosity of our Patrons at https://patreon.com/VoicesAt
