A Pod of Their Own, Episode 39: Baseball Maverick | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5614

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin the show with excitement because baseball is back! We talk about our bold predictions for the Mets in 2020 and the biggest story lines heading into spring training, including the ridiculous double-standard surrounding the media’s treatment of Yoenis Cespedes compared to Madison Bumgarner. Next, we have a podcast book discussion of Baseball Maverick by Steve Kettmann—a book about Sandy Alderson’s time as GM of the Mets. We take a look at how the Alderson era looks in hindsight, talk about our favorite anecdotes in the book, and more. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise. You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! Then, we welcome a special guest in D.B. Firstman, brilliant baseball writer and wordsmith whose book Hall of Name: Baseball’s Most Magnificent Monikers hits stores next month. (timestamp) Next, we talk about a mish mash of topics that we felt were all worthy of discussion. We then move on to Kris Bryant losing his grievance against service time manipulation and what the ramifications could be of that decision. We next discuss the Super Bowl and end with several Mets taking a stand against domestic violence.  UnforMETable, Episode 34: Pat Mahomes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1847

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Long before he would be known primarily as the father of the reigning National Football League MVP, Pat Mahomes had a long, winding baseball career. His days as a top prospect for the Twins long past, Mahomes was an unheralded acquisition for the Mets prior to the 1999 season. However, Mahomes soon proved a reliable reliever for Bobby Valentine and his 1999-2000 playoff squads, contributing some clutch innings down the stretch as the 1999 squad fought tooth-and-nail for a playoff spot, and coming up big again during the postseason. It was a memorable time for Mets fans, Mahomes, and his young son Patrick Mahomes II, who shagged flies in the Shea outfield back then, and still occasionally sports his dad’s Mets jersey now.  UnforMETable, Episode 33: Brian Schneider | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1416

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Coming off of a painful end to the 2007 season and with Paul LoDuca aging, Mets General Manager Omar Minaya made the decision to trade his former top prospect Lastings Milledge to bring in Brian Schneider and Ryan Church from the Washington Nationals. Considered a defensive stalwart, Schneider served as the primary backstop for the Mets in their fateful last season at Shea Stadium as well as their first season at Citi Field—even scoring the Mets first run in their new ballpark.
