 UnforMETable, Episode 39: Walt Terrell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1755

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Walt Terrell came to the Mets organization in a trade remembered more for the other piece in the deal—Ron Darling—as the two AA starters joined a struggling organization trading its lone fading star, Lee Mazzilli. Terrell was the first of the team’s young pitching prospects to make the majors. And while he struggled at times on the hill, he had one of the most memorable days at the plate that a Mets pitcher has ever had. Then, just as he established himself as a solid major league starter, the team traded him for a potential power bat in Howard Johnson.  UnforMETable, Episode 38: Mike Marshall | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1828

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. The first reliever to capture a Cy Young Award after throwing over 200 innings across a stunning 106 games in 1974, Mike Marshall had an impressive major league career. After 700 appearances and 188 career saves, the coda to that career came in a New York Mets uniform, in a the second half of a season that might be the closest analog we have to this pending 2020 season—the strike-shortened 1981 season. We’ll look at how a stretch of decent baseball put a .500 Mets team only a couple of games out of playoff position in the 50ish game sprint of the 1981 second half, as well as areas off the field in which Marshall had a lasting impact—such as his study of pitching mechanics and unlikely role in the development of Tommy John surgery.  A Pod of Their Own, Episode 53: Who can afford to opt out | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4553

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we open the show with the storylines of Mets summer camp—Yoenis Cespedes dingers, the very Metsy free agent additions, and the fact that very few Mets outside of Jacob deGrom have guaranteed contracts beyond 2020 and therefore the luxury of being able to opt out of the season. We also chat about the latest rumors about the sale of the team and the resurgence of a possible Steve Cohen deal. Next, we talk about this issue of opting out more broadly across baseball and how it is a luxury afforded only to the few players who have already gotten paid, while the rest of the players are faced with the difficult choice between their health and their livelihoods. We also discuss MLB’s bungling of the health and safety protocols, leading to many teams having to shut down their workouts. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.  You can follow A Pod of Their Own on Twitter (@apodoftheirown) and you can also follow all of our co-hosts on Twitter: Allison McCague (@PetitePhD), Maggie Wiggin (@maggie162), and Linda Surovich (@LindaSurovich).
