Manchester United are 13 points off the relegation zone and 14 off the top of the table. And yet this is the team who came from behind in Turin against the Champions League favourites. These players and this team are clearly not spineless, they clearly can be great, they can do great things and can show how much they care. But a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace really was deja vu, a flashback to every game against opposition of this standard. An amazing night in Turin. Manchester United’s biggest and best victory since Sir Alex Ferguson retired half a decade ago. Passion. Blood. Sweat. Tears. No, it’s not Andy Tate, but we saw some pride from the Manchester United players in a 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle on Saturday evening. Friday evening saw reports come out that Jose Mourinho was set to be sacked regardless of the result against Newcastle. That hasn’t happened, obviously. But when United went two goals down within the opening 10 minutes, it looked quite possible. It was an abysmal start, but United scored three times in the last 25 minutes through Mata, Martial and Sanchez. If the conceding two goals within the space of three minutes was traditional of this season, the comeback was more traditional of one of Fergie’s United team. We saw quality, determination, pride and effort. That we haven’t seen that all season is obviously a negative, but it’s a life line for Mourinho.
