The Drum Brigade Podcast show

The Drum Brigade Podcast

Summary: The Drum Brigade Podcast is hosted by Korey Kingston and Funky Phil Pardell. It is a weekly talk show. This show is meant to be a little different than other drum podcasts you may have listened to. The Drum Brigade Podcast is meant to be a light hearted, fun show for the drum community. This podcast is not a "how did you get your start playing drums?" life story interview, tech tip- kind of show. It is however meant to be a "drum hang" show. So the Drum Brigade Podcast is just that; real drummers hanging out, chatting, drink coffee (or beer), talk about gigs, experiences from gigs/ or life in general, play drum games, venting cracking jokes, and more.

The Drum Brigade Podcast Episode 92- Do You Even Ska, Bro??- Ryland Steen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:24:02

We're back for episode 92! Our guest this week is Ryland Steen from the bands Reel Big Fish and America. Ryland Steen is a dynamic drummer who has toured internationally with Reel Big Fish since 2005 and has played and recorded with Maroon 5, Phantom Planet, The Elected, and many others. His excellent timing and versatility has caught the attention of magazines DRUM! and Modern Drummer, and Drummer (UK), as well as fans around the globe who are excited to watch his career grow. Ryland was born on August 31, 1980 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Having been raised in a house filled with music, he began his musical training at the age of 6 on piano. By age 13 he was ready to start banging on the drums. Ryland graduated high school early at the opportunity to tour the U.S. and participate in recording projects with Mike Mogis of Saddle Creek Records. At age 19 he jumped in a van with pop/fusion group Square and left the Midwest to head to California where they quickly immersed themselves in the competitive L.A. music scene. Ryland started playing with many different groups in Orange County and L.A., and worked with bands such as Audiovent, The Elected, Gerry Beckley (of America), Suburban Legends, Start Trouble, and Free Moral Agents. The latest stage in his career has proved to be his most rewarding – joining Orange County ska/punk band Reel Big Fish and touring the world and recording. Ryland can be heard on the band's double live album + DVD Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album, 2007's Monkeys For Nothing And Your Chimps For Free, and recent album release Fame, Fortune and Fornication. Ryland spends 6-8 months a year on the road with the band, entertaining crowds of thousands each night across the U.S. and U.K. Along with headlining shows, the band plays the European festival circuit annually, including sets at Reading and Leeds in the U.K., Rock am Park and Rock am Ring in Germany, and also played the 2006 Dubai Desert Rock Festival in the Middle East. Being on the road has given Ryland the chance to develop himself as a professional player and make a name for himself as a gifted drummer. When not touring Ryland continues to do session work with Gerry Beckley (America) and Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta) and is gaining a reputation for being a ‘one take guy' for his precision and feel. As DRUM! stated in their review of Ryland's drumming on Reel Big Fish's live album, “The guy's playing is perfect.” For more info on Ryland please visit: www.rylandsteen.com For more info on Korey Kingston visit www.koreykingston.com or follow @koreykingston For more info on Funky Phil visit www.philpardell.com or follow @philpardell

The Drum Brigade Podcast Episode 91- First Concert, To Playing In The Band- John Sparrow | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:32:55

We're back for episode 91! Our guest this week John Sparrow from the band Violent Femmes. Of all the iconic names in Milwaukee history, among the most enduring on the musical front is the Violent Femmes. The band emerged from the punk scene more than 35 years ago and scored hits such as Gone Daddy Gone and Blister in the Sun, and became one of the top alternative rock bands of the 1980s. Guitarist Gordon Gano, bass player Brian Ritchie, and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo founded the band. They split up several times amid personality clashes, but have been playing together again since 2013, save for DeLorenzo, who now plays with the duo Nineteen Thirteen. It’s now South Milwaukee native John Sparrow who plays percussion for the Femmes, which works well for a couple of concerts they’ll play Friday and Saturday at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center, at Sparrow’s alma mater - South Milwaukee High School. Sparrow says he had a "lifelong bug" to play music. His father, also named John Sparrow, is a percussionist in jazz and polka bands, and taught his son a great deal. Sparrow says that the Violent Femmes were his very first concert at the Marcus Amphitheater when they opened for the B-52's. "Honestly, when I saw them the first time, I did literally say, 'I want to do this' - but when I say ‘this’, I wanted to be in the Violent Femmes," he recalls. In fact, Sparrow admits he used to sit in his basement and play drums along to Violent Femme records in high school repeatedly. "The music is unique and it's of its own, and that I think is what struck everybody that has discovered the Femmes." Fortunately, all of that basement practice paid off. Sparrow not only knows the music inside and out, but he also shares a lot of the same musical tastes as the rest of the band. "That was something we knew right from the get-go if that was going to work. I was just playing with them, now I'm really part of that band. And as we start doing new material, it was a no-brainer. It just worked." -wuwn.com For more info on John Sparrow follow @johnsparrow76 (Instagram) For more info on Korey Kingston visit www.koreykingston.com or follow @koreykingston For more info on Funky Phil visit www.philpardell.com or follow @philpardell

The Drum Brigade Podcast Episode 89- Music, Education, Fashion, & Birkenstocks- Jonathan Barber | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:38:28

We're back for episode 89! Our guest this week is Jonathan Barber. New York City-based Jonathan Barber was voted the #1 Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018 in Modern Drummer. Only 29 years old, he has already recorded and toured worldwide with such artists as Pat Metheny, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Jeremy Pelt, Wallace Roney, Terrace Martin, Jennifer Holiday, Harold Mabern, Steve Davis, Stefon Harris, and many more. Barber has also been called on for such significant performances as Jimmy Greene’s Ana Grace Project (with an all-star band comprised of Greene, Kenny Barron, John Patitucci, and Kurt Elling) and back-to-back sold-out concerts with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and Erykah Badu at the BAM Opera House. In addition to his first-call status as a sideman, Barber has recently stepped forth as a composer and leader with his Vision Ahead band, featuring saxophonist Godwin Louis, guitarist Andrew Renfroe, bassist Matt Dwonszyk, and pianist Taber Gable. Even with Barber’s history of high-profile gigs and recordings taken into consideration, DownBeat magazine calls Vision Ahead’s self-titled debut album his “greatest accomplishment to date.” Released on Rockwood Music Hall’s largest stage in May 2018, Vision Ahead is a powerful declaration of intent for a band that’s been making waves on the modern jazz scene since its debut performance at Smalls Jazz Club. The group’s blend of classic, swinging jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion is a compelling showcase of Barber’s broad stylistic range as a composer and performer. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead was featured and headline the 2018 Rainy Days Jazz Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. Born in Hartford, CT, Barber has been playing drums since the age of five, initially falling in love with the instrument through watching his father perform in the family church. Barber’s upbringing in the church instilled within him a deep appreciation of the power, passion, and full sound of the gospel music tradition, and he now brings its infectious energy to the wide range of styles in his musical toolkit. Early influences also includes beginning George Duke, Fred Hammond, Weather Report, Yellowjackets and Commissioned, and classic jazz titans like Miles Davis, Jackie Mclean, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Tony Williams and Thelonious Monk. With soul, impeccable groove, and explosive chops, Barber has synthesized his favorite traditions into a thoroughly modern and endlessly adaptable musical expression that connects with listeners from across generations. In September 2019, Barber completed his first solo drum tour in Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina). Barber endorses Ludwig Drums, Istanbul Agop Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Promark Drumsticks, and Sunhouse Percussion.  The Drum Brigade Podcast Episode 87- My Mommy Made Me This Way!- Ricky Fitness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:08:26

We are back with episode 87 for another episode. Because of COVID 19 we are recording this remotely via ZOOM. This week our guest is Ricky Fitness (Falomir). Ricky Fitness is the drummer for The Aquabats, and is probably the healthiest one of them. He uses super speed and a super knowledge of fitness to fight crime and win the girl (he's won so many girls). Ricky is one of the shorter Aquabats, but he makes up for his size by being compact and muscle-y. He likes to stand around in a super-hero, arms-akimbo type pose, mostly because it shows off the power of his muscles. He has brown eyes and short brown hair that is hidden by his Anti-negativity helmet. Recently, he has been spotted with a new haircut that is buzzed short on the sides and back, but left a little longer up top. Ricky's most distinguishing characteristic is the fact that he wears braces. He has worn them all throughout the Super Show, and his new smile looks wonderful. It was always wonderful, but the difference of before and after pictures is noticeable. Ricky grew up on the mean streets of Bridgeport, CT but has put his rough past aside to help The Aquabats fight for justice. He is usually very easy going, and is always willing to help when his friends need him, always shouting his catchphrase "I'm on it!" But life for Ricky wasn't always big stars and juice bars. Born a homeless sheltered child in the slums of Wiggerside, Ricky had to fight his way out of the mean streets to come out on top. Once involved with crime and gangs in his early youth, Ricky has since shunned evil and started a new life through Cardio-Boxing. "I didn't really know what was going on when I was jumped in to Wiggerside's toughest gang. I was only four. All I knew was that someday I wanted to develop my own fitness program, and charge people a lot of money for it." Ricky says smartly. Ricky joined up with The Aquabats when he realized they had so many things in common. Not only were they connected in their quest to fight crime, but were also related... somehow. "I guess my mom's cousin's daughter married The Aquabats. But when they found out they were all married to the same girl, they were pretty bummed, Anyways, I don't know where she is now, but I know that I was meant to play the drums for the 'bats. Not only are we related like distant brothers, but they've all gotten really flabby, and I've got a case of RickyBars and I'm not afraid to use it."  The Drum Brigade Podcast Episode 79- The Most Important Attribute Of A Musician- Ari Hoenig | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:10:27

We are back with episode 79 for another episode. Because of COVID 19 we are recording this remotely via ZOOM. For this episode we have Ari Hoenig as our featured guest. We also have Kevin Higuchi hanging with us for the whole show. Born on November 13, 1973 in Philadelphia, Ari Hoenig, was exposed at an early age to a variety of musical experiences. His father is a conductor and classical singer, his mother a violinist and pianist. Accordingly, at 4 years of age, Ari began studying the violin and piano. He began playing drums at age twelve, and by age fourteen he was honing his skills with other young jazz musicians at Philly clubs such as Ortlieb’s JazzHaus. Ari attended the prestigious University of North Texas for three years, where he studied with Ed Soph while playing with the “One O’Clock” Lab Band. Wanting to be closer to New York City, in 1995 Ari transferred to William Patterson College in northern New Jersey. He soon found himself playing for legendary Philadelphia organist Shirley Scott and working regularly in New York City. Shortly thereafter, Ari moved into Brooklyn and found himself started playing extensively with a variety of groups, including Jean Michel Pilc Trio, Kenny Werner Trio, Chris Potter Underground, Kurt Rosenwinkel Group, Joshua Redman Elastic band, Jazz Mandolin Project and bands led by Wayne Krantz, Mike Stern, Richard Bona and Pat Martino. He has also shared the stage with such artists as Herbie Hancock, Ivan Linz, Wynton Marsalis, Toots Thielemans, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, and Gerry Mulligan, although he got kicked off the stage by security shortly thereafter. Both of Ari’s self-produced solo drum CDs, “Time Travels” (2000) and “The Life Of A Day” (2002), document his exploratory nature and they represent an ambitious tribute to the melodic possibilities of the drum set. Today, Ari continues to build on the concepts of these two records by playing largely improvised solo concerts using a regular four piece drum kit and no extraneous percussion. The Ari Hoenig Quartet was formed at the end of 2002 while playing every Monday night at the New York Village jazz club Fat Cat. The band featured Jacques Schwarz-Bart on tenor sax, Jean Michel Pilc on piano, and Matt Penman on bass. They released two records on the Smalls Records label: “The Painter” (2004) and the DVD “Kinetic Hues” (2005) In 2006 Ari signed a multi record deal with Dreyfus Records and released his first record for them called “Inversations” (2006) which features the trio of Jean Michel Pilc and Johannes Weidenmueller. “Bert’s Playground” (2008), Ari’s second record for Dreyfus, features Ari’s Punk Bop Band joined by Chris Potter. Highlights of this record include Chris’s solo on Moments Notice and Ari jumping around in red pants on the cover. Jonathan Kreisberg, Matt Penman, Will Vinson, Gilad Hekselman and Orlando le Fleming also represent on this one. The next record project was for “Smalls Live”, a record label set up in 2009 to document some of the music being performed at the “Smalls Jazz Club” in New York where Ari has had a residency since 2003. Ari chose his Punk Bop Band to make this live record “Punk Bop Live at Smalls”. The Punk Bop Band features Will Vinson on alto, Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar and fellow Jazz Mandolin Project alumni, Danton Boller on bass. Tigran Hamasyan is a special guest on 4 tracks as well. Ari’s Quartet with Tigran Hamasyan, Gilad Hekselman, Orlando le Fleming and Chris Tordini released “Lines of Oppression” (2011) on the Naïve label. This record represents a culmination of Ari’s bandleading, composing and accounting skills. In 2016, Ari Released The Pauper and the Magician on AH-HA Records. It features the quintet of Shai Maestro on piano, Gilad Hekselman on guitar, Tivon Pennicott on Sax and Orlando Le Fleming on bass. On this record, Ari explores the link between story telling and jazz by creating a soundtrack to the improvised and sometimes twisted stories he tells his two small children. In 2018, Ari released a standards record called NY Standard on the Fresh Sound label. It is a tribute to playing standards in New York. The next record, Conner’s Days, is came out on the Fresh Sound label in May 2019 and it features his current trio of Nitai Hershkovits and Or Bareket. Besides the quintet, Ari leads 2 other groups which play his original music. Ari Hoenig Nonet and Trio.
