The Bravery of First Responders: Honoring the Fallen on the Frontline | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:35

In this emotionally charged podcast episode, retired paramedic Matthew shares his experiences of working in the Canadian Armed Forces and as a paramedic in Edmonton. He talks about the stark reality of losing fellow medics and the impact it had on him, especially when the first medic was killed in combat since the Korean War. He also shares his experiences of paying his respects to fallen constable Jennifer Kovach, who died while responding to a call in her patrol vehicle. Matthew reflects on the bravery of first responders and how they confront the nefarious shadows of our cities, all the while wishing to make it back home, yet remaining steadfast in the potential of never doing so. He talks about the significance of "end of shift" and how it is often taken for granted, until we are faced with the reality that end of shift may indeed mean end of watch. Matthew pays tribute to the two brave souls, Constables Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan, who lost their lives in the line of duty, and acknowledges the impact their deaths have had on their loved ones and the community. He encourages listeners to hug their loved ones a little tighter and reminds them to appreciate each moment they have together. This podcast episode is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices that first responders make every day and the importance of recognizing and honoring their bravery and dedication to their communities. #FirstResponders #EndOfShift #Bravery #HonoringTheFallen #PoliceService #CanadianArmedForces #Paramedic #RememberingTheLost #Community #Appreciation #BrettRyan #TravisJordan --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/amedicsmind/message

Episode 264: Love Beyond Loss: A Story of Remembrance on Valentine's Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:18:39

On this episode "Love Beyond Loss: A Story of Remembrance on Valentine's Day," I share some experience of Valentine's Day in 2018, just months after my mother's death and being single. I sought solace in alcohol but found none. I felt disconnected and invisible as the world around me celebrated love. A year later, sober and dressed in a blazer, I stood on stage to share my late mother's story and discovered the power of storytelling to keep loved ones alive. I received a polite standing ovation, and during the intermission, an old man shared how my story had reminded him of his mother's apple pie, a cherished memory of his own. In 2021, I found love and was spending a rare evening with a beautiful woman. This episode reminds us that while Valentine's Day can be painful for those who have lost loved ones, sharing their stories can keep their memories alive and bring comfort to others. · Thanks for listening to A Medic's Mind. It was Christmas morning, and I was so excited to see what Santa had left for me under the tree. Christmas spent as a kid whose mum has a deadly illness can change the landscape of the holiday, but it can also bestow some of the fondest memories of what that time of year truly means…this is a story of when I learned that lesson wholly.
