The Martini Cocktail: Bernard DeVoto’s Martini | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:42

Bernard DeVoto, in his book-length rant about the cocktail, The Hour, declared that the only proportions for a correct Martini were 3.7 parts gin to 1 part vermouth. The man had his ideas. So much for London dry gin. Was a man ever more proudly wrong?

 The Martini Cocktail | Review | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:42

I never gave much thought to the Martini, let alone any cocktail. I learned, like most martini drinkers, to order what was trending or common or sounded good on the martini menu, and then called myself a martini drinker. If you relate to that – even just a little – then a read through Robert Simonson's The Martini Cocktail book is pure delight. It instills pride in your choice of cocktail and elevates an understanding of the Martini’s (yes, capital “M”) progression through modern history. From the gin to the vermouth, the choice of garnishes and other accoutrements, this book includes everything you need or want to know about the Martini. Armed with this information and details about the martini glass or whether to shake or stir, this book is amusement, entertainment and intrigue – whether you’re a fan of the Martini or not.
