Who will carry on one of LSU football's greatest traditions? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1620

As sports fans, we will never forget that Michael Jordan wore the number 23. Or that Jackie Robinson wore the number 42. For LSU fans, however, we will never forget who wears the storied numbers 7 and 18. Each jersey number represents something different: number 18 goes to the best leader in the locker room while number 7 goes to the biggest playmaker. Regardless, it is an honor for any Tiger to be given those numbers. But who on the 2023 squad has earned the right to carry on such a valued and storied LSU tradition? Plus, the number 7 has been worn by some of the greatest LSU Tigers of all time: Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, and Leonard Fournette. Each of those three made a massive impact on the program and continued their success at the highest level of the sport in the NFL. But as of late, a few players wearing that number have fallen short of expectations. Is the classic number 7 cursed?! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  LSU football lands MASSIVE commitment from top-10 CB Cai Bates | Is Brian Kelly bringing DBU back to LSU?!? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1737

Is LSU football getting back to it's roots as the best defensive back program in the country?!? The college football recruiting world has long awaited the commitment of Cai Bates, one of the top cornerbacks in the country in the 2024 recruiting class. Bates is a 6-foot-2, 180 pound versatile corner that can play outside, inside, and even free safety. He is ranked as the ninth best player at his position, the 18th best player in the state of Florida, and a top-100 player per 247Sports rankings. On Wednesday, Bates pledged his commitment to the LSU Tigers. So what does the corner from Orlando bring to the 2024 recruiting class, on and off the field? Locked On's official recruiting insider, Brian Smith, joins Caroline Fenton of Locked On LSU to break down what he does best and what he can improve upon once he gets inside the LSU football building. Plus, LSU has one of the most storied and decorated histories of defensive backs in the country. From Patrick Peterson to Jamal Adams to Tyrann Mathieu to Tre'Davious White to Grant Delpit to Greedy Williams to most recently Derek Stingley Jr., the Tigers have a proven track record of producing defensive back talent. But the last two years LSU has not lived up to their reputation of recruiting and developing defensive backs as head coach Brian Kelly, DBs coach Robert Steeples, and the rest of the recruiting staff has had to build the secondary via the transfer portal. But now that LSU has landed one of the top corners in the country in consecutive classes, Javien Toviano in the 2023 class and now Cai Bates in the 2024 class, is LSU re-establishing itself as the true DBU?  Brian Kelly says LSU football isn't quite yet a title contender – and he should say that | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1714

The over/under win total for LSU football in the 2023 season is set at 9.5 wins. That's a pretty high win total for a coach entering only his second year in the program. But as far as the sportsbooks are concerned, LSU is also getting recognized as a national title contender. There are legitimate discussions about if LSU can crack into the College Football Playoff this year. A lot of people were impressed with what they saw from LSU this past season and are intrigued to see how they can build upon that success. But what does Brian Kelly think about those expectations? Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today asked Brian Kelly in June when a realistic timeline would be for his team to be title contenders. Kelly said, ”We need another year of recruiting-one more really good year on both sides of the ball, I think, put us in a position where, I think, year three, the consistency piece, the depth of our program, the messaging, all the things we do on a day-to-day basis, puts us in a position to compete for a championship.” Kelly reiterated that sentiment at the podium last Monday at SEC Media Days when he said "we're a team that's building" and that they are not quite ready to compete with the reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs. But is he wrong? While that messaging from a head coach isn't necessarily what Tiger fans want to hear, the important thing is the message inside the locker room. So how do we think the players, like quarterback Jayden Daniels, feel about the public message from his coach that their team just isn't quite ready yet? And how does that differ from the message inside the locker room, away from microphones, cameras, and the potential for creating bulletin board material? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Does the media expect LSU football to win back-to-back SEC West titles? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2415

SEC Media Days wrapped up last Thursday in downtown Nashville at the the event each media member in attendance is asked to rank their expected order of finish in the SEC East and West. Where did LSU end up? Does the media that covers either one or multiple teams in the league expect LSU to be the kings of the West again? Should they? Locked On LSU host Caroline Fenton joined Chris Gordy of Locked On LSU to discuss the latest on the LSU football roster, fair expectations, and potential trap games that could be lurking on the Tigers' 2023 schedule. Could the LSU Tigers be overlooking the Missouri Tigers? Will Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss Rebels be much improved this season? Caroline and Chris discuss how much of a better place LSU football is in now than they were this past season, which position group is most improved, and which position group could be an issue for Brian Kelly and the rest of the team.  Jayden Daniels is LSU's starting QB. Will that change with Garrett Nussmeier hungry for the job? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1595

Quarterback is the most important position in all of sports – it can make or break a game, a season, and an entire team. LSU Tigers football heads into the 2023 season with a very interesting quarterback situation. It is not interesting like other rival SEC West schools like Ole Miss or Alabama who will decide their starting quarterback through a battle in camp; LSU head football coach Brian Kelly already decided and announced at the conclusion of last season that Jayden Daniels will be the starter for the 2023 season. It's interesting, however, because the Tigers have two starting-caliber quarterbacks on their roster. Daniels, the returning starter from last year, and third year Garrett Nussmeier who decided to remain patient and stick it out at LSU even though he could be a starter at nearly any other program in the country. Kelly took the podium on Monday at SEC Media Days in Nashville, Tennessee and took questions from the media regarding the LSU football roster, how the 2022 season ended and expectations he holds for his team going into his second year on the job in Baton Rouge. Quarterbacks, of course, was the subject of one question in particular that clarified how he and the rest of the coaching staff will manage their QB1 and QB2. "Jayden’s our starter. He’ll start, but he’ll have to continue to improve and progress because Garrett [Nussmeier] is getting better every single day, as well," said Kelly. “You want to talk about great competition? That’s about as about as good as a head coach could hope for at the quarterback position. So Jayden’s the starter, but he’s got to have a great camp. He’s got to continue to progress." So Kelly backs up the statement he made in January after the Tigers rolled Purdue in the Citrus Bowl: Daniels is the starter. But a little bit of healthy competition is never a bad thing.  Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron interested in Northwestern head coach opening?!?!? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1708

Just when you think you've heard it all, you hear something even crazier. According to a report on a Northwestern blog, Inside NU, sources say that former LSU head football coach Ed Orgeron, who led Joe Burrow and the 2019 LSU Tigers football team to a national championship, would be interested in the Northwestern Wildcats head football coach opening. Former Northwestern player and head coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired for cause earlier this week after a former Northwestern football player came forward with allegations of graphic hazing in the locker room. There are reports that Fitzgerald knew of the alleged hazing which cost him his job of 17 years. Northwestern defensive coordinator David Braun will serve as the interim head coach for now and likely for the entirety of the 2023 season and the Wildcats will re-evaluate their coaching options after the conclusion of the season. So why would Coach O be interested in the job? Is the job interested in HIM?  Does LSU football head coach Brian Kelly have the right approach to recruiting via transfer portal? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1802

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly sat down with Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today to discuss his first season in Baton Rouge, how he plans to build a championship program, and what the timeline is to do so. So what is the key to building success year over year from Coach Kelly's perspective? "It’ll be depth. We’re still not there yet," Kelly told Toppmeyer. "You can’t take 13 guys from the transfer portal on defense and not have a red flag. This program is still not at the level of depth necessary to withstand injuries and things you’re going to have to withstand in the SEC. We need to take two or three transfers to top off the tank, once in a while." Depth very well could be the key to escaping a full twelve game regular season unscathed. After all, Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide has collected and developed more depth than any other team in recent history and has won more championships than any other team in recent history. But is Brian Kelly's path to adding more depth the correct one? Plus, Kelly highlights the differences between his experience in his former stop at Notre Dame and his current stop with the LSU Tigers. Is he more set up for success in the purple and gold than he was the golden domers? He was able to get to the big dance several times throughout his career with the Irish but couldn't quite win the big one. Will LSU be different? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  How LSU QB Jayden Daniels can win the Heisman Trophy this season | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1720

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels now has the second best odds to win the Heisman Trophy at +1000, according to FanDuel. The only player with better odds than the Tigers' signal caller is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams from USC. So why is Las Vegas so high on Daniels and what exactly does he need to do in order to make this preseason conversation a mid-season reality? There are several general criteria that the Heisman voters have shown that make up a quarterbacks "Heisman resume": no more than two losses on the schedule, a "Heisman moment", showing the ability to carry your team in at least one game throughout the season and of course a stat line that is at the top of college football. But what does Jayden Daniels need to do specifically in order to get a nod for the highest honor in college football? Plus, LSU women's college basketball star Angel Reese is nominated for an ESPY and will present an award at the ESPYs on Wednesday night. What does this mean for Kim Mulkey and her recruiting trail?  LSU baseball makes HISTORY | Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews taken first and second overall in MLB Draft | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1653

LSU baseball made history Sunday night during the MLB Draft becoming the first school to produce the first and second overall picks in the same MLB Draft. Pitcher Paul Skenes was taken first overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates while teammate Dylan Crews was drafted by the Washington Nationals with the second overall pick. Pitcher Ty Floyd joined in on the fun later in the draft taken by the Cincinnati Reds with the 38th overall pick in the competitive balance round and pitcher Grant Taylor going in the second round to the Chicago White Sox. To top it all off, LSU baseball head coach Jay Johnson was at the broadcast desk on the MLB Network breaking down each pick on national television with the MLB Network crew. What kind of impact did this Draft have on LSU baseball recruiting, the legacy of this team, and the national perception of the program? Plus, a familiar face to LSU baseball fans is headed back to Baton Rouge. It was reported by D1baseball.com and confirmed by Jay Johnson on Monday that he has hired Terry Rooney as the Director of Recruiting and Player Development. Rooney was on Paul Mainieri's staff early in Mainieri's tenure with the Tigers helping lead the 2008 team to Omaha before heading to UCF to serve as their head baseball coach. Rooney was most recently at Purdue serving as their pitching coach and director of recruiting.  When does Brian Kelly think LSU Football can be national title contenders? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1732

LSU Tigers head football coach Brian Kelly sat down with Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today to discuss the state of the LSU football program, what they have accomplished under just one year of Brian Kelly and what the plans are moving forward, both long term and short term. Kelly's first year went as good as any Tiger fan would hope: a win against SEC West foe Alabama, a trip to Atlanta to compete in the SEC Championship game, and a ten win season to top it all off. While year one has been considered a success, the expectations only skyrocket from there. One year ago we were asking ourselves if Brian Kelly would be a good fit at LSU; now, we're asking ourselves when Brian Kelly will bring a national championship to LSU. Can LSU win a national title this year? Sure, why not? The Tigers return quarterback Jayden Daniels in addition to their leading receiver in Nabers and four of their leading rushers. Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and defensive coordinator Matt House also return for year two under Brian Kelly. LSU has some difficult tests on their schedule, like kicking off the season against Florida State and then on the road in Tuscaloosa with a showdown against Nick Saban and company, but overall the Tigers have a fairly favorable schedule all things considered.  The BIGGEST weekend of LSU football recruiting | Which 5-star is high on the Tigers? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1366

The LSU Tigers had their biggest weekend of recruiting this past weekend as Brian Kelly took a different approach to recruiting this offseason. This past weekend Kelly and the recruiting staff hosted only out of state prospects, reserving a weekend during the football season for the in-state prospects. While that's not a common approach, the Tigers still had a successful weekend hosting six of the top prospects around the southeast. Brian Smith, Locked On's official recruiting insider, joins the show to break down what he has heard about the potential Tigers who spent the weekend in Baton Rouge plus what he has heard about the two players who did not make it to their visits. Georgia CB Zion Ferguson and Texas LB Maurice Williams Jr. both de-committed from LSU just days before their scheduled visits and shortly after announced their commitments to other schools.  LSU BASEBALL: NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2025

YOUR LSU TIGERS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!! The LSU Tigers secured its seventh baseball national championship in program history after taking down the Florida Gators 18-4 in the third game of the College World Series Final. Going into this season LSU was the unanimous number one team in the country touting the number one recruiting class in the country, the number one transfer portal class in the country, with the best pitcher and best player in the country, and after all of those accolades and a long, difficult season the Tigers are official national champions for the first time since 2009 in Jay Johnson's second year as the skipper in Baton Rouge. But it's not just baseball...this is the second national title in just three months for the Tigers after Kim Mulkey's women's basketball team cut down the nets in April in only her second year with LSU. Brian Kelly, in his first season with LSU, defeated Alabama and secured the SEC West. All of that considered, is LSU the best sports school in the country? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  CHAMPIONSHIP MONDAY | How LSU Tigers can beat Florida Gators tonight and etch the team in college baseball history | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1952

The LSU Tigers baseball team is one win away from being College World Series champions. Let that sink in... LSU punched their ticket to the College World Series final after defeating number one overall seed Wake Forest in two consecutive games, featuring one instant classic which featured the two best pitchers in college baseball and a walk-off two run bomb from Tommy White in extras. In Game 1 against the Gators, LSU pitcher Ty Floyd recorded the most strikeouts ever in a College World Series game striking out 17 Gators while giving up three runs on five hits. Cade Beloso's home plate heroics helped the Tigers yet again after his home run in the top of the 11th inning sealed the deal for the purple and gold. A brutal 20-run loss didn't help LSU's case but overall throughout the postseason it seems like there is a little bit of magic and a whole lot of clutch performances that have been on LSU's side. There is no better way to capitalize on those performances with a win Monday night against Florida to bring home the program's seventh national title. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  PATH TO THE BOOT | HUGE recruiting weekend for LSU football | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1588

LSU head football coach Brian Kelly is taking an interesting and unique approach to recruiting for the Tigers this offseason: hosting all of the out of state recruits one weekend and the in-state recruits another. This weekend is the out of state weekend and it just might be one of the biggest weekends, if not THE biggest weekend, for LSU football this offseason. Four and five star talent from across the country are in Baton Rouge this weekend with hopes to find their home for the next four years and their next football destination. Five star WR Cameron Coleman from Alabama, four star Texas offensive lineman Blake Ivy, and four star Florida cornerback Cai Bates are among the long list of talent being courted by Brian Kelly and company this weekend. Why is this weekend so important? Why is Brian Kelly and the rest of the recruiting staff taking this approach to out of state recruiting? Locked On's recruiting insider, Brian Smith, joins Caroline Fenton to talk the latest on players blazing their Path to the Boot. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
