247: Patrick McGinnis, Author of FoMO | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:43

B”H Do you experience Fomo, Fear of Missing Out? I mean, don’t we all? Well, from cryptocurrency to the career path we chose, the fear of missing out, better known as FoMO, does drive a great deal of our financial decisions – as well as others, of course. Today I have the guest who knows FoMO best. Patrick McGinnis, the first to coin the term FoMO, shares the root causes of this fear, as well as the negative and positive aspects of FoMO. His book is called Fear of Missing Out: Practical Decision-Making in an Overwhelming World.  As you’ll hear on the show, Patrick and I go way back and you’ll hear us reminisce about our Investment Banking Days, no FoMo there, though. Patrick is an international venture capitalist and host of the hit podcast FomoSapiens. He first coined the term FoMO, as well as the related term FoBO (Fear of a Better Option) in a 2004 article in the student newspaper of Harvard Business School. FoMO has since been added to the dictionary and FoBO has become an increasingly popular framework to describe choice paralysis. Patrick is also the author of the international bestseller, The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job. B”H What are some of the behind the scenes of a war torn-country, the ugly side of money, hostage negotiations and more. This is the topic of today’s episode.  You’re listening to Jewish Money Matters. I’m Yael Trusch, your host, welcome to the show. Today, we take a glimpse at the not so pretty side of money, especially in the context of war torn countries, hostage negotiations and obtaining proof of life. My guest is Daniel Levin, Author of  Proof of Life: Twenty Days on the Hunt for a Missing Person in the Middle East. This thriller is like a movie. It’s not. It’s very real; it’s Daniel’s story as he searches for a westerner in war torn Syria. How did Daniel end up in this position? The role of money in hostage negotiations. It’s not exactly what we might think. Daniel has been involved in hostage negotiations numerous times in different countries. We discuss the personal toll this kind of work takes. B”H How do you feel about financial adulting? Sounds scary? The term makes you want to cringe? My guest today assures us that we don’t have to be scared. She’s going to tell us how to “adult,” financially, that is, while still feeling good about ourselves and not getting dragged down in the process. You’re listening to Jewish Money Matters, I’m Yael Trusch, your Host, welcome to the show. Today I’m talking with Ashley Feinstein Gerstely, Author of the newly released book Financial Adulting: Everything You Need to be a Financially Confident and Conscious Adult. Ashley is a friend of the show. She was with us back in 2018. Today we tackle her newest book, the need for this book – one that she and I both wished we had early on in our lives. But thankfully, we have now! The process of financial adulting, the mindset stuff that gets in the way, and frankly, some of the systemic issues at play, which can’t be ignored. I know you’ll want to grab a copy of this book and gift it to a woman you love as well. A little bit more about Ashley… She’s the Founder of Fiscal Femme, a financial education platform, and the creator of the 30-Day Money Cleanse program, which has helped thousands of women cultivate harmonious relationships with money and achieve their financial goals. As a trusted money expert, Ashley has been featured by Forbes, NBC, Glamour and the New York Times, among media outlets, and I’m thrilled to have her back on the show.
