The Quack Attack Podcast

Summary: The Quack Attack Podcast is the only show solely devoted to the Mighty Ducks trilogy (that we know of). Mike, Tommy, Kevin and possibly a special guest or two give their theories on Gordon Bombay, Charlie Conway, the Ducks, the Hawks, Iceland, Eden Hall Academy and everything else in the Mighty Ducks universe. [powerpress} Mike, Tommy and Kevin recorded a normal podcast, but decided after that it could use a little more work. Show Notes The shop promo code is: CHEERf5b49d. Here is the Washington Post story Tommy talked about at the top of the show. Thanks in advanced for understanding. If we can the right people it should be good. Thanks to @Conway96Ducks and @Forzamilanx1899 for a nice semifinal. Don  Tibbles handing over his whistle: OK, so Charlie mentions R.E.M. when Linda is like, "I still don't know you that well." Linda just sort of silently nods. Mike, as official creator of the game feels the spirit of the question was not harmed by Charlie's mention of R.E.M. later on. The answer was still obvious, since Linda mentions Pantera. Thanks to @erscimia and @Duncanbruins77 for a barn burner of a semifinal match.  Ep. 139: Legendary Hollywood music man J.A.C. Redford talks composing the Mighty Ducks sequels, how Melissa Etheridge got cut out, arranging music for Adele | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:03

Emmy and Oscar nominated composer/orchestrator J.A.C. Redford decided it to slum it with the no-award winning Mike, Tommy, and Kevin. Show Notes Thanks to J.A.C. for coming on. Check out his website at jacredford.com. He also has his own Wikipedia page. We didn't really give him enough credit. You've definitely heard his work at some point in your life. His full IMDB is here.  Some quick bios for some names JAC mentions that you may not know: James Horner was a composer, conductor and orchestrator probably most well known for his score of Titanic. He passed away in 2015. Tom Newman is a another composer, conductor and orchestrator. He has won six Grammys, including some for his work in WALL-E. If you want more music talk, we spoke with D1 composer David Newman in Episode 61.  The 7th Votage fo Sinbad came out in 1958: Not a great movie, but some great music. JAC was nominateed for an Emmy in 1984 and an Emmy in 1985 for his work in St. Elsewhere. As a reminder, the main Mighty Ducks theme, created by David Newman. The Trinidad and Tobago scene with the steel drums: Lee Sklar has contributed to over 2,000 albums as a session musician. Here is the Avatar fight scene JAC tried 13 different ways that ended up different than any of the 13 ways he and his orchestra conducted it. JAC mentioned The Trip to Bountiful as some of his best work. Also Mama Flora's Family. Randy Newman: singer, songwriter, composer. JAC arranged and orchestrated Skyfall. It's so dope: Thanks to @bberg19 for the first #QuackQuestion. How challenging was it to score D3, which is still a kid movie, but far more serious than D2? How did he reflect this change musically? — Bryan (@bberg19) October 11, 2017 Thanks to @AirLemaire for the second #QuackQuestion. #QuackQuestion did you know you struck gold after coming up with the song for Hans’ funeral? — bobby lemaire (@AirLemaire) October 11, 2017 Hans' funeral scene. Listen specifically for the music. It's pretty powerful.

Ep. 138: How did Wolf ‘The Dentist’ Stansson even make it to the NHL? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:13

Mike and Kevin (Tommy is absent) take a #QuackQuestion from Brendan on just how exactly Wolf Stansson even reached the NHL. How does a player from Iceland even get discovered? They then stumble into how Wolf's recruiting of dual nationals led the the quick rise and fall of Icelandic hockey. Show Notes Thanks to Brendan (@bkshaughn) for the #QuackQuestion. Full text of the question: I know you guys have said on the pod that Russ's star turn in D2 was perhaps the greatest story in sports, but the fact that an Icelandic dude made it to the NHL is pretty fucking improbable as well. How the hell did that happen? Iceland was never good enough to field a team at the World Juniors, one of the main venues for assessing up-and-comers.  Obviously, there was no online footage to draw scouts there.  I have a couple theories: 1) A stubborn scout or GM was sick of the prevailing, Don Cherry-trademarked "European players are soft" notion at the time. They happened upon Wolf while on vacation or because of a delayed connecting flight, and they said "I'll see to it that this fucking kid ends that stupid misconception once and for all!" 2) A GM from that Don Cherry school of thought told his head of European scouting, "Find me some fucking players! And no more pansy-ass Swedes or Finns!" The scout has to look somewhere new in order to keep his job, and he thinks, "Why not Iceland? What do I have to lose?" What do you think? Anze Kopitar is like Wolf in the sense that he's the lone NHLer from a small country. In his case, he had to leave home early (at 16 I think?) to further his career. Did Wolf have to do the same? As for the end of his career, if you will indulge me: I don't think Wolf's actions were as bad as reported. I just think that he was a borderline NHLer, and there were very few (if any) team executives or teammates in his corner. If he were a better player or more popular in the locker room, he would've stuck in the league. I think, however, that he was at that weird, Ty Cobb level of competitiveness that runs beyond even what most NHLers are comfortable with. The only ones who roomed with him on the road were rookies, and they were forced to do so. Anyway, that's just my theory. What do you think? We talk about Wolf Stansson in Episode 117. For reference, the entire country of Slovenia is about the size of the city of Houston population-wise. Thanks to Leia (@bashsister87) and Nick (@ForzaMilanx1899)  for what might've been the best round of trivia we've had this far. Here is the movie Leia was in. No joke, it looks really good.  Ep. 137: D3 director Rob Lieberman on making Mighty Ducks hockey scenes realistic, cutting windows into an ice rink | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:49

Rob Lieberman, director of D3, joins Mike, Tommy, and Kevin to talk about how he went from Buffalo to Los Angeles, making iconic commercials, inheriting D3, making hockey scenes look realistic, and why they had to cut windows into an ice rink. Show Notes Here is the Oreo cookie commercial that Rob made that became a smashing success: And here is the China version: No word on what those original two kids are doing now. There are plenty of other versions on YouTube. You can see the McDonald's Super Bowl commercial at this link. Here's the "New Kid" commercial: Here's the trailer for Breakaway: . Brill had a co-writing credit on D3, but it was mostly written Jim Burnstein. We had Burnstein on Episode 52.  Here is the scene Rob was talking about where Dwayne flips the puck on his stick and goes all the way down the ice to score. Rob helped up come with Ted Orion taking his wheel-chair bound daughter on the ice: Thanks to @bberg19 for the #QuackQuestion. How did the kids on the Ducks feel about Emilio Estevez having such a reduced role in D3? Did they take it as him abandoning them? — Bryan (@bberg19) September 18, 2017 Steve Brill sued Disney in 1998 for 5 percent of their gross revenue made from "exploiting unique objects and things” relating to the Mighty Ducks. According to Variety, at one point Mighty Ducks merchandise accounted for 80 percent of the $1 billion in NHL merchandising revenues If you want to know more about Rob, the Buffalo News had a great story on him.
