Uncommon Sense: the This is True Podcast

Summary: Uncommon Sense is the podcast for This is True, the oldest Entertainment newsletter on the Internet, starting in early 1994 and running weekly since. TRUE features 'weird news' stories with a purpose: it's Thought-Provoking Entertainment. TRUE is news commentary using rewritten summaries of real news stories as its vehicle. The newsletter is text, but the podcast is decidedly not an audio version of the newsletter, so you may want to try a free subscription to the newsletter, too.  Podcast 035: “Why Should I Have to Develop a Sense of Humor?” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:13

In This Episode: Another story based on religion, another complaint from a reader asking “Why should I have to develop a sense of humor?” In this week’s podcast, my response to that question. Jump To… * Show Notes * How to Subscribe * How to Comment * Episode Transcript * List of All Episodes Show Notes * Mike’s tagline on the story discussed (“There is a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to defend your faith — and a time to have a sense of humor.”) is a twist on Ecclesiastes 3: “There is… a time to weep and a time to laugh….” * Rev. Straw told me the parentheses in “Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)” are important. If you’re unsure what that church is, there’s info here. She also mentioned the podcast Pulpit Fiction. * And since she brought it up, the Get Out of Hell Free card site is here, and the place to order some if you want to chill out about stuff like this is here. * Would I (as the reader challenged) appreciate a cartoon about Mohammed? Sure — “not just because I’m a thinking person,” I said on that page, “but also because I make my living saying what I think needs to be said, even when I know some will be offended by it.” * My figures for the percentages of Christians in Canada are from here, and in the U.S. from here. * Kit was slightly off on the name of the “Peak Flown From Afar” — it’s a rare (for China) limestone structure clearly distinct from the sandstone around it. According to legend, an Indian monk named Huili was there 1,600 years ago and was very surprised to see something so different from everything else in the area. He decided the peak had flown over from India since such formations are common there. * I wasn’t sure about the percentage of atheists in the U.S. and guessed off the top of my head. The Pew Religious Landscape survey reported that as of 2014, 22.8 percent of the U.S. population is religiously unaffiliated, atheists made up 3.1 percent and agnostics made up 4 percent of the U.S. population. The 2014 General Social Survey reported that 21 percent of Americans had no religion with 3 percent being atheist and 5 percent being agnostic (Wikipedia). * Are there any atheists in Congress? According to the Huffington Post, as of 2017, no: not one, and only one “identifies as religiously unaffiliated.” How to Subscribe Search for Uncommon Sense in your podcast app or on iTunes,

 Podcast 032: The Poison Keyboard | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:05

In This Episode: A really interesting cautionary tale for anyone who posts anything online — on social media, on a review site, even a comment on a blog. Can you be sued …and LOSE? You bet!  Podcast 031: Letting Kids Set Boundaries | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:52

In This Episode: Following on the previous episode, a lot of child abuse could be stopped if we encouraged our kids to set boundaries — and then we honored them. The story from the middle school in Utah where girls were not allowed to say no to boys asking them to dance really drives this all home: the rule actually sets girls up for abuse.  Podcast 030: What ‘Mandatory’ Means | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:29

In This Episode: A home-town story has a notable parallel to a national story, and they both hinge on men in power taking advantage of the young — while other supposedly responsible adults failed to do their legal, and “mandatory”, duty. It was a tough one to record, and it’ll be tough to listen to, but it’s an important, and thought-provoking, issue: what would YOU do? Since I spend as little time as possible in hotel casinos, I’m staying with friends in the first planned community in the county, called Paradise Palms. I recognize the 1950s-1960s architecture from growing up in California: a really distinctive style that attracted a lot of stars who needed homes here when they did shows at the casinos. People who lived in the neighborhood included Johnny Carson, Rip Taylor, Bobby Darin, Phyllis Diller, and many more. I popped out and took a photo of one of the houses in the neighborhood that caught my eye,

 Podcast 023: It’s Tough to Find a Hero | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:52

In This Episode: It’s really fun to find patterns in weird news stories: Randy gives a couple of “paired” examples. But really: people have to turn to weeds and rocks as “heroes”?! Jump To… * Show Notes * How to Subscribe * How to Comment * Episode Transcript * List of All Episodes Show Notes * If you’re looking for some real everyday heroes, check out HeroicStories, which Randy started way back in 1999. Randy announced in This is True that it was coming, and by the time it launched a month later on May 1, it had 8,200 subscribers in 62 countries — and grew from there. But when Randy spun it off to a new publisher, it faltered when the new publisher became ill, and later died. It’s back, though, under a new publisher. * HeroicStories is still running under the original manifesto Randy wrote Way Back When. * The HeroicStories book collections are available here. * Kit remembered correctly: it was Vail that had a “panty tree” on the ski slopes. The Vail Daily tells the story. KMGH Denver reported on Vail’s in Spring 2010 with a photo that shows it indeed had bras, too. But the tree was chopped down for 2010’s season to make room for a new chairlift. Vail’s wasn’t the first, though: Wikipedia notes that was at Aspen, from “at least the 1980s, perhaps as early as the 1950s.” * No Longer Weird: firefighters who set fires so they have something to do, or sometimes to give other firefighters some excitement. And then it gets complicated…. * The 2007 99-Cent store wedding story, with the priest’s letter, is here in my blog, as is my essay Why I Embrace “Gay Marriage”. * According to the Gallup poll, about 4 percent of people in the United States identify themselves as LGBT (not counting the multitude of “pro-marriage” congressmen who are arrested for soliciting other men for sex). Where did Randy’s “10 percent” guess come from? He recalled a 2011 Williams Institute report which found 8.2 percent of Americans reported that they had engaged in same-sex sexual behavior, and 11 percent reported some same-sex attraction — which probably does count the multitude of “pro-marriage” congressmen who are sexually attracted to other men.
