BPM Tech Ep. 35 "Is Sharing Caring.... or just Distracting?" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1855

**On THIS episode: ** * AJ rejoins us from the Land of the Rising Sun * We take a sobering look at the current state of social media * and Tweetmail from a BPM listener! This episode is a deep one, Chis and AJ go from talking about the hypothetical new concepts of the future of the smart-phone; to being moody about Social Media. The issues around social media are just growing- and are we just turning a blind eye to the issue. "Is Sharing actually Caring?" Dan from Japan. Tweet question. Our thoughts on the state of the future design of iPhone. Path changes it Path on sharing: http://blog.path.com/post/160220754082/be-the-inspiration * Path (http://www.path.com/)- public profiles, really? * We've always had the ability to Share A Moment (http://blog.path.com/post/149683944747/that-awkward-moment) * Who purchased Path in 2015 (http://blog.path.com/post/120147299377/a-new-chapter-for-path) * I don't want another platform where I am a BRAND. Just want to be me Social Media: What are we sharing anyway?? * Brands got it easy. Lots of platforms to stump or pay to stump your wares. But what about those that want to share what is personal? Who reads email? Are we moving to a mass Texting/Messaging moment? And for the last time, AJ would like to point out, NO you don't have 500 “friends.” * THE RISE of micro sites, micro communities (Chris's Minimalist community, AJ's Watch Social media is nothing more, right now, than a bulletin board in the public square with an empty soap box in front of it. Where a robot attendant tells you what you want to see, and when you should speak.  Episode 30 "CofiTech" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1838

Coffee has quickly become a conundrum for US. Do you K-cup or Nespresso? Do you Pour-over or Pull a shot? To grind or pre-grind...that is the question? AJ ANTI-Kcup/podding -1 for non compostable products and -1 for cost. +1 for convinence...and thats about it Chris Annoyingly naive coffee newb; tall mocha with whipped cream for over a decade. Chris - Best Coffee accessory? CoffeeVac. $15 on Amazon. One of the most-used gifts by my wife. Airtight coffee bean container. Keeps 'em fresh. AJ Coffee Accessory; a good ceramic bur hand grinder that is adjustable To me doesn't matter if it is as fancy as a Porlex Or pretty (like the one I have) Cleaver Chef Chris - Best Travel Mug? According to TheSweetHome.com, it's the Zojirushi 16-ounce Stainless Steel Mug, $26 on Amazon. The Sweet Home also mentions the Oxo Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set, $13.50 on Amazon.... or BBB? AJ My mug- a ceramic everything mug, made by Starbucks (and yes- I complain that Woods don't make one often) AJ For me, coffee is just as much a part of me and my culture, as it is my daily routine. However, on the weekend, or in the evening, it is almost ritualistic. Slowing down and hand doing everything is just a must. Hand grid beans (yes you hear right) and making a cup of coffee by hand (by way of only a flame) I think really brings the value on something we often either over value (at $5 a white cardboard cup) or under- appreciate (buying cheap coffee that we don't know where it comes from) After months of looking at different machines- finally settled on one; and couldn't be happier For a hot moment; considered portable espresso makers; Minispresso Staresso Handpresso The real deal Kamira- handmade in Sicily Italy http://www.espressokamira.com/prodotto.php?id=15 Steel- works great with induction The long time champ Bialetti “Moka Pot” the tired and true (made in Italy) https://www.bialetti.com (Patented first in 1933) Made of aluminum- can put “foodies” off or won't work for folks with induction top kitchens Connect With Us AJ: patreon.com/ajbarse or follow me on Twitter/Instagram both are @ajbarse Chris: Sign up for my Quiet Conversations newsletter at bit.ly/quietchris or you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and Medium as @mnmltek.  BPM Tech: Episode 29 - Royal Note Rumble! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1852

* AJ puts a sleeper hold on a popular note service, and tag teams up with another contender. * Chris has been an associate of the Four Horsemen of online notetaking apps. He'll give you the inside scoop on which is real and which are fake. Lets get ready to Royal Note Rumble!! Ringside right here on BPM: Tech. The Big Show: AJ has a follow up from last episode on why you buy a case for your devices...like your phone. #SplatteredScreen. Just as he has in order a new case. **_Online Notes - why is this a thing?_** * If you're like Chris, you have a ton of ideas and thoughts swimming around your head, and need some kind of tool to keep track. * A digital notebook can be used to quickly jot down bits of info before you forget. * It you're like AJ, you have it as a portal for the junk drawer, or digital filing cabinet. **AJ - ** * AJ breaking up with Evernote, and is in a beta test group for something that goes right after the heart of Evernote...oh yea, and it is free. * Migrated to Apple Notes (https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12081?locale=en_US). So far so good. Tagging isn't really missed at all. BUT, * Sharing folders needs to be a thing * Pinning notes; needs to be a thing * A little color wouldn't be bad * Notebook (https://www.zoho.com/notebook/)- from a little big company called Zoho; beta testing * For the writing experience on desktop- OMM (http://www.ommwriter.com/) is my mantra still * For cross platform writing in general Quip (http://www.quip.com/) be it for me. Chris - * Box Notes, (https://www.box.com/notes) a free note/todo/collaboration solution for both online and desktop. Clean and LOGICAL interface, unlike... * Dropbox's Paper (https://paper.dropbox.com/)... which just came out of beta and is official as of Monday. I'm a tech, and I still can't figure out where everything is. Exportable to MS Word. Can't delete, only archive. Similar to a know-it-all computer tech confusing you with jargon blabber, yet not helpful in fixing your problem. * Bear (http://www.bear-writer.com/) - iOS/macOS - Nice look, great synchronization, colorful, but Tag-heavy. Browser extensions, convert notes to PDF or Word or JPEG, cross-note links. Free, but Bear Pro is $15/year. * Simplenote (https://app.simplenote.com/) - from the Wordpress folks - Cross-platform, clean intercase, supports Markdown, can publish online, share with others. Not a lot of integration with other software; like a one-man food truck. * Google Keep (https://keep.google.com/) - Nicely integrated with Google's Info-silo, but those huge boxes..... * Apple Notes (https://www.icloud.com/#notes) - What I'm currently using. Still curating the content to consolidate information.  BPM Tech: Episode 28 -"Tactical vs Practical" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1780

On THIS episode: * AJ goes all tacti-cool...and then goes back to civilian-suave * Chirs has been going all Mad Max for a few years...now I'm feeling all chrome and shiny... * ...and we both dive into one of our favorite subjects; baggage! Why is it that we have bag lust in our hearts? * It is just as much a tool as the tech we put in it. * It protects our investment in tech gear. * It's an extension of our identity, of who we want to be. * It's better than dealing with a cocaine addiction. * For photography, security through obfuscation ; you don't want to cary a bag (when traveling) that says “Hey steal me! I have expensive camera gear!” **AJ - is Tactical bags Practical as a camera bag (to be a feature on Patreon) * AJ uses a Condor EDC (http://www.condoroutdoor.com/Condor-156.aspx) and Chris loaner of the 5.11 Bail Out Bag (http://www.511tactical.com/bail-out-bag.html) * Tactical good in principle, but NOT in execution for my photography * Durable- the specs on these bags impress for the price. * New word; Denier . It with a number tells you the weight (and stiffness) of the material usually in relation to Nylon or Cordura * LOVE Molle and morale tape.. should be on everything, just saying * AJ has a Case Logic FLXM-101 Reflexion bag (https://www.caselogic.com/en-us/us/products/camera/shoulder-bags/reflexion-dslr-ipad-small-cross-body-bag-_-flxm_-_101_-_anthracite) * (Fun Fact, was founded in 1984 in Boulder, Colorado, and is now a member of the Thule Group of companies) FLXM-101 Reflexion bag Chris - Evolving His EDC * Chrome Industries BLCKCHRM Messenger Bag (http://www.chromeindustries.com/product/citizen-messenger-bag/BG-002.html?dwvar_BG-002_size=NA&dwvar_BG-002_color=BKLB&cgid=messenger_bags) * Not quite Kevlar, but just as bulletproof * So comfortable to wear with the stabilization strap. I could take on a gang of street fighters in a dark alley and this bag wouldn't get in my way * Best feature: the seatbelt strap * Since it's one big, open space to carry items, need some cable accessory solutions (http://www.condoroutdoor.com/ma54tandtpouch.aspx) - Condor modular TandT pouch. * A close runner-up to my money: Tom Bihn Medium Cafe Bag (https://www.tombihn.com/collections/briefcases-and-messenger-bags/products/medium-cafe-bag?variant=16396845511) Connect With Us * AJ: patreon.com/ajbarse (http://patreon.com/ajbarse) or follow me on Twitter/Instagram both are @ajbarse * Chris: Sign up for my Quiet Conversations newsletter at bit.ly/quietchris (http://bit.ly/quietchris) or you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and Medium as @mnmltek.
