5 Secrets to Building FOMO for your Classroom | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

What’s more important? Going over the same calendar and weather routine every single day (and boring kids half-to-death) OR changing things up and bringing something fresh and new to school each morning? Would you rather fill your day with monotonous routines or would you rather light up your students’ worlds with the best classroom on the planet? Bring enthusiasm and excitement into your classroom every day.  Let’s make school the most exciting place in the world! Think of all the things that captured your imagination growing up. What made you jump out of bed in the morning? What ideas or topics made your mind race with questions and your eyes go wide with wonder? Take a few seconds to reflect on your most memorable moments in learning and feel that same excitement again! What was the feeling like when that curiosity first took hold?   Now let’s make every day in the classroom feel that exact same way.  When school is a fun and exciting place and students are learning something new and challenging each day, they don’t ever want to miss a day. Keep the goal on inspiring passions and capturing imaginations and kids will hurry into class each morning to ask:  “What are we learning today?” When students are this excited to learn, they monitor their own behavior and direct their own work because the sooner they understand what we’re learning today, the more equipped they will be to understand what we are learning tomorrow. It’s much bigger than a Fear of Missing Out for school because your classroom is a fun, rockin’ place — it’s a Fear of Missing Out on learning something new that might be awesome and cool and inspiring. Come to think of it — it’s not really fear at all. It’s love. Love for knowledge. Love for your classroom.  That’s why they don’t want to miss out. So how do we create this kind of classroom, where students fall in love and don’t want to leave when the bell rings at 3:00 PM? Find out in this week’s episode of the Punk Rock Preschool Podcast. There’s no how-to guide on building a classroom around love and enthusiasm; some curricula, textbooks, college professors, etc. may claim they have the answer but that’s a sham. I don’t have the answer either. But you do. If you want students to be excited, you have to be excited. You have to BELIEVE in what you’re teaching. If you don’t love the lesson that’s planned for you, plan your own! You deserve to teach what you love. You deserve to teach what makes you happy. By rewarding yourself and bringing your interests and passions into class, you are also rewarding your students. Your lessons will have a newfound energy as you share with your class the coolest, most important wisdom you know. Participation will jump through the roof, not just because of increased enthusiasm but you can always explain “The Why” of a lesson because you chose it! You must have had a great reason! Enthusiasm is contagious! Before I decided to make school the most exciting place in the world, my classroom was not the fun place we eventually created. I was just starting out as a teacher and did not want to rock the boat too bad so I just went ...

The 21st Century Skills for Success You Need to Start in Preschool | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Did your education prepare you for life in the 21st century? If I asked you to come up with a list of “things I didn’t learn in school,” I bet you’d have no problem running off a number of essential life-skills you had to learn on your own. Meanwhile, you spent four years in high school reading Shakespeare and practicing Calculus… If you want to make sure your students learn stuff they actually will use in their lives, this podcast is for you!  When you were in grade school (or even college), how much time did teachers spend explaining practical, useful, every-day topics? How much time did your teachers dedicate towards helping you build healthy habits, exercising, and creating a healthy diet? How long did teachers spend going over how to grow and strengthen relationships with friends, family, and partners? How often did your classroom discussion revolve around being a great parent, handling finances, student loans, deciding on a future career, employing critical thinking skills, etc.? If your public school experience was anything like mine growing up, the answer is probably “rarely” or “never.” Despite using these skills everyday in adulthood, they were nowhere to be found in our outdated school system. So we learned them on our own. How many other skills and talents did you have to learn on your own to get to where you are today? In this podcast, we take a new approach to actually give your students the skills, mindsets, and knowledge for success. Just because we had to learn on the go, doesn’t mean our students have to go at it alone. You can right the ship and bring these essential life skills into your classroom! That way, your students leave your classroom not just ready for the following grade, but ready to take on a competitive world! The world is changing. And fast. The iPhone was invented 10 years ago; today is pretty much part of our bodies. Imagine where we will be in 10 years with virtual reality and 3D printing! Yet our curriculum remains bogged down in the ideas of the past. As I look back on my education, I am not angry that school didn’t prepare me for the real world. If anything, I am worried and scared that the school system may never get fixed and future generations will continue to suffer from these outdated expectations. The standards from the mid-twentieth century simply do not translate to success in the 21st century. The days of memorization are over. Every piece of information is available at the click of a button on your smartphone. The sooner our education system recognizes that obvious fact, the sooner we will be able to nurture our students to thrive in the over-stimulation and fast-pace of the 21st century. Information is everywhere. And in this world of information overload, we should be teaching students how to sift through the bombardment of opinions and how to distinguish fact from fiction. Our focus should be on helping our students access that information, then sort through it, make sense of it, and apply it to their lives to solve problems. Teachers don’t have to be the arbiters of information anymore; instead you can teach your students to fall in love with learning and pursue it on their own! That is the true 21st century standard for success. In the world we live in, you can learn ANYTHING with internet and a library card. The kids who can take advantage of these resources to always to learn,

How to Build a Growth Mindset Culture in a Pre-K Classroom | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

In our class, everyone knew to always “do your best.”  These three magic words changed everything. In this episode, get all the tools and mindsets to build a classroom culture around effort and growth. It really is amazing… when you praise kids for their hard work and self-betterment, kids will work really hard to make themselves better!  This idea of praising the process — giving students credit for their hard work rather than their intelligence, was developed by Carol Dweck as part of her Growth Mindset Theory.  If you’re unfamiliar with the work of Carol Dweck and her Growth Mindset Theory, here is how she describes it on her website: “Individuals with a fixed mindset believe that their qualities (such as intelligence and other personality traits) are “set in stone”– how God made you is basically who you are.  One’s traits are fixed — not something that can be practiced or developed. Individuals with a growth mindset, on the other hand, believe that effort or training can change one’s qualities and traits.” So essentially, with hard work, focus, and practice, anything is possible! Nothing is set in stone. Any child can grow up to be anything or anyone through their own tenacity, effort, and willpower. The theory also states that praising children for their intelligence (“You’re so smart!”) can actually be harmful long-term because students get locked into the idea of being smart. If a child’s identity is wrapped up in their intelligence, what happens when situation comes along that challenges their intelligence? What happens when they struggle with a problem or a new concept? Identity Crisis! Dr. Dweck explains that when you praise kids for hard work and effort (“You’re such a hard worker”), they have no such crisis. When faced with a challenging situation, these children aren’t worried about their perceived “intelligence.” They only care about doing their best and working hard to solve the problem. That’s within their control and they can always take pride in their effort! They don’t control if other people think they are smart and they don’t care! Because being smart is not nearly as important as being a hard worker and sticking with a problem.  “Do your best” was our class mantra,  but there are plenty other “Cultural Callbacks.” Wait. What’s a cultural callback? You’re probably familiar with traditional callbacks – like “class, class” “yes, yes” – that bring students’ attention back to the teacher or assignment. Cultural Callbacks bring students’ attention back to – you guessed it! – the classroom culture! And that culture is always centered around praising effort and doing your best. Now everyone is different and I know “Do Your Best” may not be the Cultural Callback that you want to be saying every single day. That’s why I’ve provided you with a freebie that includes 10 Cultural Callbacks so you can pick those that work best for your personality and your classroom! If you want to push your students to reach their full potential while also building their self-esteem, this is the podcast for you! Developing a growth mindset culture is the real deal. This may sound crazy, but by the end of last year, my preschool students were reading, writing their own original fairy tales, doing math, learning about economics and entrepreneurship,

Inspire the Future Leaders of the World | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Before you teach a topic, always ask yourself: “Will this make my students fall in love with learning?” As preschool teachers, we shouldn’t obsess over repeating the calendar and weather every morning because this sends the wrong kind of messages to kids: Learning is routine. Learning is the same thing every day. Learning is repetition whether you know it or not. Is that really the first impression we want kids to have of school? Routine, boring, repetition? No way! Kids should be coming to school excited and anticipating what they will learn next! And to do this, we need to show them the most fascinating footage in the world. If you wanted to impress an adult, what would you show them? Find those kinds of videos! Find the resources that will make your class say, “Wow! Cool!” when they learn something new. You never get a second chance to make a first impression and preschool is a child’s first impression of school so we teachers better impress!  You have the opportunity of a lifetime to give your students a GREAT first impression of school.  So as teachers, we need to make the year as fun, exciting, and knowledge-packed to persuade our students that learning is an adventure and this, is just the beginning. In today’s episode, we discuss how to ditch the uninspiring routines and make every day a thrilling journey to capture imaginations and captivate minds. We will work together to create a classroom that leaves your students in love with school, inspired to learn, and excited to explore the world of knowledge ahead of them! I’ll be honest, I worry that research, academics, and bureaucrats drive far too much of the education in this country, especially in the arena of early childhood education. Our focus should be on creating a lasting and positive impression of learning in these formative years! We should be developing and nurturing passionate, interested thinkers! Their first years of school should be focused almost entirely on developing a love for learning and creating the best first impression of school that we possibly can! Imagine how far that can take a child! Unfortunately, most Big Program Curricula don’t aim to inspire (they barely instruct). The Curriculum my school provided was filled with cliché themes and barely challenged the students to learn the alphabet. There was no flash. There was no pop. There was no real substance. How were my students supposed to get excited and invested about learning with half the year dedicated to Seasons and Holidays? How were my students supposed to fall in love with learning moving at this pace with these units? Where was the excitement? Where was the adventure? Something had to change. It was time to rethink preschool. I can’t even remember my preschool years and I barely remember kindergarten. I don’t think this has anything to do with time lapse or my age; it has everything to do with the lacking rigor and fun. I realized: “If you want to be remembered, you have to teach something worth remembering.” And I needed our classroom to be remembered. I wanted our classroom to be a memory of positivity, self-esteem, and fun– a source for confidence and self-esteem when challenges arise in life. I wanted students to look back on all they accomplished in preschool and push through any obstacle, knowing that nothing can hold them back.  I wanted our classroom to leave an impact that would inspire passions and last a lifetime. How could that happen if the classroom became a forgotten memory?

Creating the Pre-K Classroom of Your Dreams | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

It’s your classroom and you’re in total control!  You can teach what makes you happy.  If for some reason things aren’t going the way you planned or the way you like, all you have to do is make a change. It’s that simple!  Nothing can stop you from having the classroom of your dreams.  In the very first episode of the Punk Rock Preschool podcast, find out how to bring your passions, excitement, and enthusiasm to school every day and teach what you love! What makes you tick?  What are your favorite interests that energize and excite you? What topics get you animated and loud? Find the subjects that fit your personality and your classroom and teach them!  The only way students will be engaged is if teachers are engaged! I know what it feels like to go through the motions, to feel trapped within your curriculum — teaching the same thing everyday; feeling like your school routine is become more of a trance than a schedule.  But you can snap out of that trance! You can teach anything you want and that means teaching what you love. When you teach your passions and bring your natural energy and enthusiasm to class, your students will match that same energy and enthusiasm! Even more, they will begin to find their passions and develop their own interests! As you expose them to the fascinating things in your life and in the world, they will make the association that learning must always be this exciting! If you’ve ever felt stuck, trapped, or bored with the lessons you have to teach, this episode is for you! I was ready to pull my hair out sticking to the curriculum I was given! I did not love teaching about cars and planes or animal noises or spending all morning going over the weather and calendar. I felt like the curriculum from my school was holding me back. Then I realized that my responsibility wasn’t to following this curriculum; it was to my students and my parents! So, I did what any first-year teacher with no experience in the classroom would do — I made my own curriculum and never looked back. The results were incredible. In this episode, we discuss building the mindset to throw caution to thew wind, take control of your classroom, and teach the things that make you happy. Get ready to see amazing results. When you teach the things you love, you make school a fun and cool and exciting place for kids! And when you give kids a great first impression of school and learning – when you set them up with passions, interests, and a desire to keep learning – then you’ve changed a life.
