In the Bleachers Podcast

Summary: Listen to guys who know as much about college football as you do... but without Trev Alberts to yell and act stupid. Each week we'll have something to say, sometimes interesting, sometimes nothing more than putting on random mascot heads as you try to decipher what we're saying.

ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Twelve | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

After a weekend that saw me head up to Chapel Hill for homecoming we're back on track for the Slate of Eight folks. Talking all of your big games this weekend with the gumption that you expect out of the kid. We talk a little BCS Bowl picture, the difference between being explosive and efficient, plus why coaches can't hit people and a little more. Rutgers-Cincinnati Duke-Georgia Tech Texas Tech-Oklahoma State Ole Miss-LSU Ohio State-Wisconsin Oklahoma-West Virginia USC-UCLA Stanford-Oregon The Big East is still up for grabs and it seems like we're definitely on the verge of an interesting finish. While the conference lost their Top Ten unbeaten team, the league is still definitely worth following folks. Duke makes another appearance on the Slate and it's because the Georgia Tech game is a battle for them to stay in contention for the ACC Coastal. Duke's going to struggle to stop the Jackets but keep an eye on Atlanta. Texas Tech can capitalize on a bad Oklahoma State quarterbacking situation. Ole Miss is a team that has no bitch in them, but they just aren't good enough to beat LSU. Ohio State is going to test the soft edges of Wisconsin's defense. Oklahoma playing West Virginia. You remember West Virginia? Do you? Remember? Oklahoma tries to avoid being upset by a middling West Virginia team that people thought were amazing world champions for beating terrible Baylor. Our fun talk is to end the show. The Pac-12 has UCLA, a team I love, battling USC for the right to the Pac-12 South Crown. UCLA's finally having fun playing football, thanks to Jim Mora and now he's going to try and beat up on Lane Kiffin's bunch. Up in the North, Oregon looks to outscore Stanford as they have the last two seasons. To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Ten | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We've got another Slate of Eight and it's the first weekend of the greatest month of the year. Halloween was last night and now we're speed racing to the end of the season, starting with a big weekend. I'm flying it solo again, and to be honest I like it because I get a chance to ramble on about football and let the passion come through. There's a lot of topics discussed here, including one that's near and dear to my heart. Here's the Slate: Arizona-UCLA Texas A&M-Mississippi State Clemson-Duke Texas-Texas Tech Arizona State-Oregon State Oklahoma State-Kansas State Oregon-USC Alabama-LSU We kick it off out west where Arizona is taking on UCLA. Of course I pat myself on the back about the Bruins turn around and point out that they might be the Pac-12 South Champs if they can keep finding ways to win. More importantly, with Arizona playing, we get a chance to talk about concussions. Yes, I get pretty angry because I realized just how realistic and accessible that real time impact monitoring could be, if only the NCAA or conferences or schools cared to do it.  After that we talk Aggies and Bulldogs quickly. Hit on Clemson taking on Duke. Explain the difference between a guy looking healthy and a guy beating a bad team because apparently idiots can't tell the difference. We also talk about how much I dislike Texas now after the terrible way they play football. Then we talk Mike Riley as the coach of the year as he hosts Arizona State. Oklahoma State and their new found run game has a good shot at Kansas State but can they pull it out? Then we get to the "games of the year" from preseason, that sort of aren't really games of the year anymore. USC looks like their defense couldn't play dead in a cowboy movie. LSU has an anemic passing game that has so many flaws it is basically the worst passing game out there. Tough to imagine both teams, or either team honestly, pulling off the upset. Even though they are both playing at home. Enjoy. To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Nine | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

It's another week and that means the Slate of Eight is here to get you all sorts of ready for the weekend. Before we get into this week's action, here are some programming notes. For this weekend's biggest game I've got The Subway Domer on the podcast to talk Notre Dame and Oklahoma. I also got a shot to talk to Allen Kenney on the CBR Podcast about some of this week's action so check that out. Oh and yes, I do radio in South Bend every now and then and you guys should check that out here and the second portion is here. Yeah, I'm working all over the world. Next time I do radio in Canada, I'll let you know. Here's the Slate: UCLA-Arizona State Texas A&M-Auburn Tennessee-South Carolina Cincinnati-Louisville Mississippi State-Alabama Texas Tech-Kansas State Florida-Georgia Notre Dame-Oklahoma I love patting myself on the back so anytime UCLA does something right I'm going to do that. Where Auburn and the Tennessee games are concerned those are mere opportunities to talk about what's wrong with each team and the somewhat inevitable coaching searches they're about to embark upon. That means we talk Gruden and then hit on changing coordinators and what that does to a team. I hype up Teddy Bridgewater, then talk a little LaDarius Perkins and why Alabama is going to be in for a closer game that a lot of folks expect. Collin "I refuse to call him Optimus" Klein should be the different maker in the Big 12 showdown. Then we get to the Cocktail party. That means talking about Shawn Williams' comments, which I'm not a fan of doing publicly. That said, it won't really matter in this game as the Dawgs have done nothing to make me think they're super excited about being in a fistfight for 60 minutes. Wrapping up on Notre Dame and Oklahoma and there is plenty to discuss there. Enjoy. To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB Podcast: The Subway Domer Talks Notre Dame vs Oklahoma | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We double dip the podcast today folks and we're kicking your morning off with this Notre Dame preview. The Fighting Irish are undefeated and headed out to Norman to take on the eighth ranked Sooners. So, of course, we have longtime friend of the program, The Subway Domer, on the show. Make sure you check him out over at Subway Domer. This is a big game and we waste no time on talking about the old stuff because it doesn't matter. This is a chance for the Irish to show themselves on the big stage against an opponent people respect. The big question this game is how the Irish secondary handles Oklahoma's proven and advanced passing attack. We talk plenty of OU vs ND and get into how Everett Golson should be used in this ball game given his recent injury history and the Sooners being susceptible to the quarterback run threat. We also hit on Oklahoma where I give some praise to Mike Stoops and the job he's done resurrecting the back four of the Crimson and Cream. Ultimately we give you what you need this podcast. Enjoy it folks! To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Eight | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We've got a solo edition of the podcast because I had a lot of football things to discuss and I didn't want to tire a guest out with my long winded explanations. Enjoy this one folks because it was fun. There are clearly games to be covered but here's a quick look at what general topics are also discussed in depth; bend but don't break defense, how greedy college football offensive coordinators are, how inconsistent college players are in general, how pride doesn't make you taller or faster and why all one-dimensional teams are not to be dismissed. So, here's the Slate folks: Virginia Tech - Clemson Nebraska - Northwestern Oregon - Arizona State Florida State - Miami Michigan - Michigan State LSU - Texas A&M Kansas State - West Virginia South Carolina - Florida Clemson should put the work to the Hokies. Nebraska is every bit as not good on defense or at quarterback as they have been the last few years. Oregon-Arizona State is a lot closer in theory than I expect it to be in practice. The same can be said for Florida State and Miami. Michigan is a team that irks me so I go with Sparty and explain why. Plus I talk William Gholston here and why Jerel Worthy has 0 to do with my feelings on him. Then I get into LSU and how they should manhandle Johnny Football. Plus Kansas State and the Mountaineers get after it and I think we might just see the Fighting Holgorsen's lose their second game of 2012. Then we get to Sakerlina and Florida; can the Gamecocks stand up to the fist fight that is Florida, a week after they got pushed around by LSU?  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Seven | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Big show this week and it is coming to you live from Fayetteville, NC. And by live I mean taped here and then produced a little while later but you're still getting it. The guest for this week is Allen Kenney. You folks know he's a regular here on the ITB Podcast and you can find his work on Oklahoma over at Blatant Homerism. His general college football writings are over at Crystal Ball Run; check them both out.  This week's games: Duke-Virginia Tech Oregon State-BYU TCU-Baylor USC-Washington West Virginia-Texas Tech Stanford-Notre Dame South Carolina-LSU Texas-Oklahoma This is a glorious week of ball games and we kick it off with the 5-1 Duke Blue Devils traveling to Lane Stadium. Virginia Tech is a vulnerable team and the Blue Devils, even with Sean Renfree out, can score points in bunches. The Hokies are ripe for an upset; but does anyone believe they will fall to the Devils? BYU is a team that's intrigued me all season, they take on an Oregon State team with no quarterback. TCU is another quarterback-less team and we'll see just how Baylor attacks this team that has fallen quite far since 2011. Washington will need all of their very limited weapons firing at the same time to have a shot against USC. Texas Tech and WVU is a possible upset, or is that just me hoping one passy happy team beats another pass happy team? Stanford and Notre Dame will play manball so I'm excited for that. Sakerlina and LSU is a ball game that should interest a lot of people. LSU is good enough to win, but will they? Then we wrap up on the Red River Shootout. Plenty of chatter on this game and I highly recommend Texas take my advice.  To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB Podcast: Nubyjas WIlborn Talks UGA & GT | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today we've got my man, Nubyjas Wilborn on the podcast to address the calamity that is the state of football in the state of Georgia following this weekend's events. The Bulldogs got beat down by the Gamecocks and the Yellow Jackets took a big loss to the Clemson Tigers. To add insult to injury in Atlanta, Paul Johnson pulled the trigger on Al Groh Monday. Before we get into the podcast make sure you check out The Shadow League, where Wilborn puts some work in. You can also find him on 1100 The Game in Atlanta and of course on 1500 in Macon, Georgia. Mad shout outs to Macon and the surrounding area, that's old Felder country. Due to the level of frustration Paul Johnson inspires in me, we kick it off with Georgia. We talk a little of the underneath of the program and how, as a football team, it has been quite sometime since UGA has done much of note. This year, the Dawgs have to beat Florida or, even at 10-2, they'll be looking at an underachieving 2012.  Paul Johnson takes center stage as a guy who just can't seem to get the Jackets right. Sure they won a 2009 ACC Title, but they haven't been back to ACC Championship Game, haven't won a bowl game, have looked downright average since the departure of Chan Gailey's recruits and seem poised for a tailspin in 2012. How much longer does CPJ have in Atlanta? To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB's Slate of Eight: LSU-Florida Bonus 'Cast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Yes, yes, yes. That is the answer to whether or not I totally forgot to put LSU at Florida on the Slate of Eight. Also, yes, yes, yes, I totally meant to and should have. Sorry bros and breauxs. But, as tribute to this great match up of Top 10 teams, what I offer up to the Based Football Gods, is this podcast. 20 or so minutes of talking about LSU and Florida. Everything I see when I look at these teams. How I feel about the game from a myriad of angles: Why Trey Burton is a G. Why Zach Mettenberger inspires no confidence for me. Why you have to hand off to Russell Shepard. Why Florida should bring mad pressures against this terrible LSU offensive line. Mostly a lot of stuff like that gets answered. Oh, and here is the Chalk Talk that I did on the game! My bad folks, but hey, you get a dedicated podcast. Enjoy this shit.  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Six | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

I had a whole post up, the post got deleted. Eff that noise. Here's the games: Arizona - Stanford Oklahoma - Texas Tech Washington - Oregon Miami - Notre Dame Georgia Tech - Clemson Nebraska - Ohio State West Virginia - Texas Georgia - South Carolina I rolled solo this podcast and there is a lot of football involved. I hit on all the games from an adjustments and match up standpoint. Pay close attention to the WVU-Texas tilt as this is going to be quite the match up to watch as the teams look to counter one another. Hopefully you all enjoy this. By the way, I promise that the post before was way better than this but currently I'm writing from a hole and crying because somehow it decided not to save.  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Four | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the podcast we've got Chip Patterson, one of the guys behind the great college football team over at CBS Sports' Eye On College Football. Chip chops it up with me for a grand old time and I just want to warn you, this is a hell of a podcast effort if I do say so myself. Because I do.  So anyways here are the games we're getting into this week: BYU - Boise State Rutgers - Arkansas California - USC Arizona - Oregon Mizzou - South Carolina Michigan - Notre Dame Kansas State - Oklahoma Clemson - Florida State BYU lost a tough one last weekend and they look to rebound against a Boise State team that's well coached and is slowly clawing their way back into the rankings. Rutgers at Arkansas is one of those games that should interest everyone and if you're a Big East fan, get excited because Rutgers can get a big win on a decent stage. USC got exposed this weekend and now we'll see if Cal and their weapons can tax that defense in a different way. Arizona and Oregon as a game of tempo is fun to discuss and I definitely recommend everyone tune into that trackmeet. So much questions about Mizzou and Sakerlina quarterbacks as they battle shoulder injuries. Here is also where I take time out to rant about the SEC helmet suspensions and the like.  Michigan at Notre Dame where I explain how terrible I really think Michigan is. Then we hit Kansas State where Collin Klein is like that generic create-a-player that you make who can somehow win the Heisman. Then the big daddy of the week, out of the ACC, Clemson at Florida State. This game is about revenge for Florida State, it's also about the 'Noles staying the course for a BCS game and it is a proving ground for Clemson's defense.  Oh, and we also give Texas props for absolutely no reason at all beyond I'm super proud of their commitment to playing big boy football.  ESPNTriangle & 99.9 The Fan: Talking Notre Dame to ACC | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Got a chance to talk to my guys Adam Gold and Joe Ovies yesterday about the Notre Dame to the ACC, sort of, move. We talk about the deal from a couple of different angles, including how the move could impact the Irish's long time independence, how it helps the ACC and of course; what to do with that Notre Dame-Duke game. As always, it is great talking ball on ESPN Triangle and 99.9 The Fan. Enjoy folks! If the widget doesn't work for you, click here to download. Thanks to Shannon Penn for getting me the audio to post!

ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Three | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Got another great guest this week on the Slate of Eight, Russ Mitchell from College Football News. Russ is one of my favorite guys to chat with and despite the technical difficulties, we had a great time talking football. Please excuse a bit of a quality issue; it was on my end and the whole record, quality and everything got janky as hell but we made it work. As for the games? Get excited because we've got eight good ones, including one of my favorite rivalries. BYU - Utah Arizona State - Mizzou Navy - Penn State Wake Forest - Florida State USC - Stanford Notre Dame - Michigan State Alabama - Arkansas Florida - Tennessee The Holy War is up and this is a tough one because the teams are not slated to play anymore beyond 2014, get the hate in while you can in one of the nation's most underrated rivalries. We look at Mizzou trying to get back on the winning track against a very hot Arizona State team. Navy and Penn State should be a chance for Penn State to get on the winning side of things. In the ACC it seems Wake Forest's terrorizing of FSU should end now as the Noles are on a mission. Can Stanford keep pace with the Trojans? Um, probably not. Notre Dame and Michigan State is intriguing and despite watching last years game multiple times, I'm still not sure how Notre Dame got 31 points. Hogs and Tide has lost some luster so we talk about other stuff like how terrible Arkansas' offensive line is and how brave Tyler Wilson must be. Then of course we get mad Tyler Bray love because Tyler Bray is the Bray-iest, Bray who ever Bray-ed the game. To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below.  ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Two | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

This week on the Slate we've got Kevin McGuire, a man who wears many hats. Obviously he is well known as @KevinOnCFB at the twitter; he's also the man behind the No 2 Minute Warning Podcast, as well as College Football Examiner. And, yes, we work together over at Crystal Ball Run, dropping some football knowledge. We've put in plenty of podcast hours and so we hit the ground running in this week's edition of the Slate of Eight. Here's the games we hit on: Penn State - Virginia Auburn - Missippi State Florida - Texas A&M Miami - Kansas State Nebraska - UCLA Washington - LSU Air Force - Michigan Georgia - Missouri Plenty of action to look at and yes, I'll admit, I totally forgot about the Michigan game being in the ITB Pick'em Pool. To be fair, after this past Saturday can you blame me? Alabama left a crater of a football team in Dallas. So, this weekend we've got Penn State, another team that is less than thrilled after week one, taking on Virginia. Cavaliers are ready to fight so it should be interesting. In the SEC Auburn looks to keep Dan Mullen winless against the non-Ole Miss SEC West, Florida hopes they aren't the first league team to lose to newcomer aTm and Georgia has their hands full with Mizzou in a crucial SEC East game. LSU plays host to Washington in a game my "jazzed up for level" has fallen down from the week before. Also out of the Pac-12 UCLA plays Nebraska in a game my "jazzed up for level" has increased significantly.  Throw in Miami's explosive team against a generally disrespected Kansas State team and we've got a week to watch folks!  To listen to the show click here or subscribe to one of the methods listed below. As a companion to the Slate we do have the ITB Pick'em Pool up and running so make sure you get your picks in there! Washington State at BYU Kentucky at Louisville South Carolina at Vanderbilt Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech North Carolina State vs Tennessee Boise State at Michigan State Auburn vs Clemson Alabama vs Michigan Plenty of interesting storylines to go around.
