In this episode, we use a case study format to analyze how young professionals can break through the intimidation of speaking up in high profile meetings.  We also explain the LionSage case study format, which is: Situation Root Cause Strategies Result Situation Jane is an up and coming young professional, and a star individual contributor.  She has high career aspirations, however the one issue that is currently limiting her growth is being intimidated in high profile meetings.  She is unable to comfortably voice her opinions, and that is severely impeding her efforts to build a strong, professional brand amongst her colleagues. Root Cause At the root of many of these types of issues is the desire to maintain a positive image amongst one’s colleagues.  This leads to the fear of damaging that image by saying a stupid comment or asking a dumb question, especially in front of senior leadership.  In the podcast, we discuss what the imposter syndrome is, and how it relates to this root cause. Strategies The podcast details 6 strategies that Jane can use to overcome this fear of speaking up in high-profile meetings: Connect with a meeting purpose that you actually care about Limit the self-conscious noise that takes up finite brain space Remind yourself of the unique value that you bring to the meeting Force yourself to commit to a small goal, and make contributions as early as possible Brainstorm a list of relevant questions before the meeting Brainstorm for 2 minutes Prioritize the list of questions Answer as many as possible before the meeting Ask the remaining important unanswered questions in the meeting Visualize the worst case scenario, and realize that you can handle it Result As a result of utilizing the 6 strategies above, Jane is able to relax and fully participate in an upcoming meeting.  Although she is still not where she wants to be, she is well on her way to breaking through the fear that held her professional brand back.

In the first episode of the LionSage Podcast, I briefly introduce myself, Arfan Qureshi.  My background is in leadership and organizational development.  I have been blessed to work in several countries across the globe as well as help leaders take their professional brand to the next level. This podcast is going to talk about how you can find your voice and build a unique professional brand.  What is a brand? Check out the episode to find out (hint: it is not just your logo or your social media presence). If you’re still unsure of whether a building a professional brand is worth it, I give you 8 benefits of building a professional brand: Clarify your strengths – What is your unfair, natural advantage? Seek partners – Stop trying to be jack-of-all-trades.  Who you need to surround yourself with? Understand pain points – What do people actually need, even if they do not know it yet? Differentiate yourself – What makes you stand out from the hordes? Clarify your thinking - What are your strongly held beliefs? Targeted Networking – Which relationships are most valuable to you? Career Advancement – How do make your brand a transferable asset? Think like an Entrepreneur – Even as an employee, how do you become as resourceful as an entrepreneur? Go ahead and deny them.  I dare you.
