How Pollution Affects Your Health | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Can the heavy traffic in your commute be affecting your health? No matter where you live, the quality of the air you breathe impacts you every day.Can the heavy traffic in your commute be affecting your health? No matter where you live, the quality of the air you breathe impacts you every single day.  Air pollution is the contamination of air by smoke and harmful gases; mainly oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen. Air pollution comes from many different sources, such as factories, cars, and smoke - all of which release a wide variety of pollutants affecting air quality. Negative health effects increase as air pollution worsens. How air pollution impacts your health is determined by several factors: the length of time you are exposed, your general health and genetic makeup, and the concentration of pollutants. People with asthma, lung and heart conditions are the most vulnerable to the affects of air pollution. Children are especially vulnerable, since their lungs are still developing. The elderly are at a higher risk as well.  What can you do to protect your health and the health of your family? Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Gabriele Pfister, shares the ailments caused by exposure, if you are at a greater risk for health-related effects and the lifestyle choices that you can change to help the impact of pollution on your health.

The Scary Truth About Food Fraud | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

One of the biggest food safety issues right now involves the deliberate adulteration of food with biological or chemical agents.Counterfeit food is a serious international problem.  One of the biggest food safety issues right now involves the deliberate adulteration of food with biological or chemical agents.  Economically motivated adulteration (EMA), is not aimed to harm people but to inflate profits by fraudulent means.  EMA events cost the food industry between $10 billion and $15 billion a year.  What exactly is EMA? Cheap products are presented as branded or top-quality ones, or cheaper ingredients are added to genuine products to increase profit margins.  Mislabeling is another issue.  Over 50 percent of pomegranate juices do not contain the advertised ingredients. Shaun Kennedy, former director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense at the University of Minnesota, estimates that 10 percent of food that consumers buy in the developed world has been adulterated. Whenever there is food tampering, there are potential risks to health. Kennedy joins Melanie Cole to explain what's happening with our food system.  He also shares the top food most subject to food fraud and how to protect yourself.

Too Young for Botox? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Somewhere in your 20's you may begin to see the signs of aging, but when is it okay to start using Botox?Somewhere in your 20's you may begin to see the signs of aging: little wrinkles here and there, crows feet around the eyes, laugh lines.  But when is it okay to start using Botox? Aging is the most natural process that you go through and it is evidenced in your skin. Thankfully there's Botox. Over the last couple decades, Botox has become very popular. More and more women in their 20's are even taking the Botox approach for a more youthful appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2012 there were 6.1 million injections performed. Of those, almost 100,000 were for people in their 20s, which was a 10 percent raise from the previous year. The reason behind the increase is that Botox is used as a preventative way to stop wrinkles from becoming permanent. The injections help by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles in order to stop wrinkles from forming. Some studies claim that you can retrain your muscles if you start using Botox at an earlier age. So, is it premature to start using Botox in your 20's or a wise beauty investment? Plastic surgeon, Dr. Peter Geldner, MD, discusses Botox and why younger women are jumping on board with getting injections. He also shares information on when it is too young to start the injections and any risks for starting at an early age.

Liposuction: Facts You Need to Know | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

You would think having a lot of excess fat would make you a good candidate for liposuction. Unfortunately, that's not the case.We are a society obsessed with image and staying thin. When diet and exercise doesn't seem to be working, many people turn to plastic surgery for a helping hand in obtaining their ideal slender physique. According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, liposuction is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world. It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss technique; it is a reshaping technique. So, having a lot of excess fat doesn't make you a good candidate for liposuction; in fact, it is actually the opposite. Individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle but have a few problem areas make the best candidates because their skin is more firm and elastic. There are two layers of subcutaneous (lying under the skin) fat: deep and superficial. In a typical procedure, the doctor makes a tiny incision and inserts a hollow, stainless-steel tube (cannula) into the deep fat layer, because there is less risk of injuring the skin. The doctor pushes and pulls the tube through the fat while breaking down fat cells, and a "vacuum" pump or syringe removes the fat with suction. The liposuction heals in a few weeks, but be prepared for a considerable amount of bruising and swelling. You may also experience lumpy skin and numbness for several months following the procedure. Liposuction is generally not covered by health insurance. The cost varies based on the areas worked on, amount of fat removed, the state you live in and the doctor performing the procedure. Renowned Chicago plastic surgeon, Dr. Peter Geldner, MD, shares the latest technologies and techniques of liposuction, plus the risks and complications you need to know before undergoing the procedure.
