39 – Fahim Fazli: Actor, Author, Warrior, & Patriot (with Michael Moffett) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 44:16

Fahim Fazli is a man of two worlds: Afghanistan, the country of his birth, and America, the nation he adopted and learned to love. He’s also a man who escaped oppression, found his dream profession, and then paid it all forward by returning to Afghanistan as an interpreter with the U.S. Marines. When Fahim speaks, the story he tells is harrowing, fascinating, and inspiring. Born and raised in Kabul, Fahim saw his country and family torn apart by revolution and civil war. Dodging Afghan authorities and informers with his father and brother, Fahim made his way across the border to Pakistan and then to America. After reuniting with his mother, sisters, and another brother, he moved to California with dreams of an acting career. After 15 turbulent years that included two unsuccessful arranged marriages to Afghan brides, he finally qualified for membership in the Screen Actors Guild—and found true American love. Though Fahim's California life was happy and rewarding, he kept thinking about the battlefields of Afghanistan. Haunted by a desire to serve his adopted country, he became a combat linguist. While other interpreters opted for safe assignments, Fahim chose one of the most dangerous: working with the Leathernecks in the embattled Helmand Province, where his outgoing personality and deep cultural understanding made him a favorite of both Marines and local Afghans—and a pariah to the Taliban, who put a price on his head. Fahim Speaks is an inspiring story of perseverance and patriotism—and of the special love that one man developed for his adopted country.  You can purchase his memoir Fahim Speaks here. Penelope Trunk is the co-founder of Brazen Careerist, a career management tool for next-generation professionals. Penelope also has an outstanding website/blog (penelopetrunk.com) where she gives all kinds of valuable advice; she explains why old advice - like pay your dues, climb the ladder, and don't have gaps in your resume - is outdated and irrelevant in today's workplace. She has a reputation for giving advice that is counterintuitive but effective, like take long lunches, ignore people who steal your ideas, and stop vying for a promotion. Click To Tweet → Awesome Interview With Penelope Trunk Trunk is known for test-driving her advice before spewing it. Her own career choices have been featured by TIME magazine and the London Guardian as examples of the new issues people face at work today. Both the New York Times and Business Week cited Trunk's writing as especially in tune with this new workplace. In her personal life, Trunk routinely (often awkwardly) demonstrates buzzwords before they buzz, like the quarterlife crisis, portfolio career, and shared-care parenting. Subscribe to the Podcast on iTunes→ She is the author of three books Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success, The New American Dream: A Blueprint for a New Path to Success, & The Power of Mentors: The Guide to Finding and Learning from Your Ideal Mentor. Trunk spent ten years as a marketing executive in the software industry and then she founded two companies of her own. She has endured an IPO, a merger and a bankruptcy. Prior to that she was a professional beach volleyball player. Trunk started writing business advice when Fortune magazine published an open call for a woman to write about her own life as an executive. Trunk auditioned with a piece about her brother's stupid Internet ideas, and a piece about her boss's appeal, and she won the job. Today, she is a columnist at Yahoo Finance and the Boston Globe, and her syndicated column runs in more than 200 publications worldwide. Trunk has spent roughly ten years each in Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and New York City. Recently, taking her own advice about how to leverage scientific data to choose a job and a place to live, she landed in Madison, Wisconsin. The first word her baby learned in Wisconsin was cow. Trunk is also a popular public speaker. This is true, but not massively true. For example, where she has spoken, she has been popular, but she does not speak all the time. That said, as a career advisor, Trunk realizes that a bio is not so much factual as aspirational, and she feels compelled to put an aspirational paragraph in her own bio. Otherwise, how can she advise other people on setting goals for themselves that are a bit of a reach? She is dedicated to helping people find success at the intersection of work and life, because that's what she wants for herself. She thinks of career advice as a group effort - the movement for her generation ' so please email her. The Corps is among the most lasting institutions in America, though few understand what makes it so strong and how that understanding can be applied effectively in today’s world.  Julia explores the cadre of non-commissioned officers that make up the Marine Corps’ system of small unit leadership. To help us better understand what makes these extraordinary men and women such effective leaders, Dye examines the 14 traits embraced by every NCO. These qualities—including judgment, enthusiasm, determination, bearing, and unselfishness—are best exemplified by men like Terry Anderson, the former Marine sergeant who spent nearly seven years as a hostage in Beirut, and John Basilone, the hero of the Pacific.  To assemble this extraordinary chronicle, Julia Dye interviewed Anderson and dozens of other Marines and mined the trove of historical and modern NCO heroes that comprise the Marine Corps’ astonishing legacy, from its founding in 1775 to the present day.  29 – LtGen Russel Honore’: Retired Army General; Commander of Joint Task Force Katrina | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:40

Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré (U.S. Army, Retired) is the 3-star general who burst upon the national scene in 2005 when New Orleans was in dire straits following Hurricane Katrina. He was the commander of Joint Task Force Katrina and was in charge of the massive search-and-rescue operation and the restoration of order in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast following the terrible storm. And in the course of doing his job there he showed the world what authentic leadership looks like. Click To Tweet→Awesome Interview with LtGen Russel Honore'! Gen. Honoré, who now lives in Baton Rouge, spent 37 years in the Army, and he continues to serve in a number of other ways. He thinks of “giving back” as an essential part of patriotism. So, nowadays he is an active public speaker, business consultant, Senior Scientist for the Gallup Organization, and CNN contributor on topics related to disaster preparedness He has a new book out that is sure to raise some eyebrows as it addresses ways to make this world a better place in which to live – at home and abroad. Now, the book, titled Leadership in the New Normal (Acadian House, $16.95), may not sound like a book on social conscience and responsibility. But sprinkled among the practical lessons on how to be an effective leader are observations on topics such as the immeasurable value of good parenting and the virtue of helping poorer countries develop at a quicker pace. Having been an Army commander of missions on five continents, not surprisingly he makes some bold and insightful statements in his new book. He predicts, as others have, that the next wars will be fought over water, not oil. He points out that a society that essentially predestines some of its children to a life in prison – via the “Cradle-to-Prison Pipeline” – is a sick society that needs to examine its collective social conscience and work hard to address this American tragedy. He praises the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) for the leadership role it has taken toward curbing this stunning reality of life in the U.S. On the global front, Gen. Honoré advocates making more of an effort to help turn “have-nots” into “haves” – a subject that seems to be close to his heart – not only locally but nationally and internationally.  He suggests that such a movement would be good for national security: “People who can feed their families and feel like they’re getting somewhere in life are less dangerous people.” In one chapter, he says “decision superiority” is an essential quality needed by leaders of the 21st century. He defines the term as the ability to “see first, understand first, and act first.” Without this quality, General George Washington would not have defeated the British in December of 1776, he adds. In another chapter, he identifies the first three principles of leadership: Do the routine things well; don’t be afraid to take on the seemingly impossible; and never allow yourself to become paralyzed into inaction by fear of criticism. Leadership in the New Normal is available through bookstores and gift shops nationwide. It can be obtained online at www.acadianhouse.com or by mail order from Acadian House, P.O. Box 52247, Lafayette, LA 70505, (800) 850-8851. It retails for $16.95 plus $4 for shipping. In a special chapter on the importance of leadership at home, he writes: “A family is a team, and teams need leaders” – that is, parents who are devoted to parenting and teaching their children. Dale Dye was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He graduated as a cadet officer from Missouri Military Academy but there was no money for college so he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1964. He served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1967 through 1970 surviving 31 major combat operations. CLICK TO TWEET → Awesome Interview with Dale Dye! He emerged from Southeast Asia highly decorated including three Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in combat. He spent 13 years as an enlisted Marine, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant before he was chosen to attend Officer Candidate School. Appointed a Warrant Officer in 1976, he later converted his commission and was a Captain when he was sent to Beirut with the Multinational Peacekeeping Force in 1982-83. He served in a variety of assignments around the world and along the way managed to graduate with a B.A. degree in English from the University of Maryland. DYE worked for a year at “Soldier of Fortune” Magazine when he finally decided to retire in 1984. He spent time in Central America, reporting and training troops in guerrilla warfare techniques in both El Salvador and Nicaragua before leaving the magazine in 1985 and heading for Hollywood. Coming to Hollywood he had a single mission in mind…to change how American civilians view the common grunt. Having been around infantrymen all his life and having been one himself, he knew that the majority are intelligent, creative, and full of heart…and the image of the dumb cannon-fodder blindly following orders not only was not true…but was a grave disservice to those brave servicemen who had risked and often gave their lives so that our nation could survive and prosper.  25 – Jim Palmer: Writer, Artist, Coach, & Religion-Free Jesus Follower | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:58

Jim has his Masters of Divinity degree in a box beneath his bed. In his former life he was a successful Senior Pastor. That was before he walked out on institutional church and organized religion to find out what was real about his relationship with God. Since 2006 he has been chronicling his journey beginning with Divine Nobodies: Shedding Religion to Find God (and the unlikely people who help you), then Wide Open Spaces: Beyond Paint-by-Number Christianity, and now latest book, Being Jesus in Nashville. It makes Jim nervous to be referred to as a “widely acclaimed author,” but that’s better than the most recent label pinned on him, “heretic.” In a nutshell, Jim is an ordinary guy who likes people. He is a recovering codependent and a social media junkie who champions the idea that religion doesn’t have to divide people but can empower humankind for courageously creating a world that works for everyone. Perhaps Jim cares deeply about people because of his own troubled childhood and personal suffering. After leaving church ministry Jim led  a non-profit agency for at-risk kids, and later served as the U.S. Director of Education for International Justice Mission, an international human rights organization based in Washington, D.C. These days in addition to writing, Jim does personal coaching, leads “shedding religion” retreats and workshops, hosts a weekly national Divine Nobody Call, and promotes the Occupy Religion message and movement This interview is longer than most of my others, and I got to be honest, talking to Jim made my head hurt.  Regardless of where you stand on religion and faith, Jim will get you thinking about the truth required in leadership and being a better human being.
