Previously, he served as Deputy Secretary for Public Safety to Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York and as Chief of Staff to the Office of Justice Programs in the U.S. Department of Justice. The podcast addresses violence reduction. Abt believes that violence in America can best be understood and reduced by focusing on specific people and places, rather than an overbroad approach to an entire community. He also emphasizes legitimacy and procedural justice in order to promote community collaboration and interagency cooperation. Abt draws from his experiences in New York State and the U.S. Department of Justice, and has authored, among other publications, “Integrating Evidence to Stop Shootings: New York’s GIVE (Gun-Involved Violence Elimination) Initiative,” discussing New York’s approach to reduce gun violence and providing guidance to similar initiatives.
