 Gamer’s Haven Episode 79 – Roll-Playing vs. Role-Playing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:53

In this episode, we all disagree about what roll-playing vs. role-playing is.  In the Three Parter, Ethan forgets what he wants to talk about, Jeremy does a three part PDF review with The Gamer’s Cookbook, … And Our Tummies Growled, and briefly touches on Magic of the Old West, Strongholds I: The Basics, and Bride of Portable Hole, and Nathan talks a bit about Champions Online: Free For All. Total Running Time on this episode is 94 minutes. About The Gamer’s Cookbook Gamers have a bad habit of stuffing their faces when they game, and most of what they use for stuffing is junk food. And when they do eat something remotely considered a decent meal, they tend to go for expensive take-out; pizza, hoagies, cheesesteaks, chinese, fast food, etc. This short cookbook provides you with a small selection inexpensive recipes that most gamers seem to like. Along with being cheap (costing between $0.82 and $3.00 per person to prepare), these are mostly easy to make, if not fast to prepare, with most of them taking less than a half hour to prepare. Best of all, it isn’t the greasy, fat-filled, high-calorie dietary nightmare they usually consume. Just remember, before attempting any of these recipes, make sure you have an appropriately large pot, something along the lines of 12 to 15 quarts. Otherwise, you may find a tendency to end up with a few servings being fed to your stove and counter. These recipes have been taste tested and found suitable for use on all forms of starving artists, underfed college students, tabletop gamers, youth athletic teams, and some small military units. This product is a test marketing product designed to test the market interest for this sort of product. One final note. This is written by a US resident and uses ingredients common here in the United States and Canada. Don’t foolishly assume any cookbook available online is written according to ingredient availability at your own local grocery store. I have enough bad reviews by residents of other continents angry that they made such an assumption and bought a cookbook they can’t use. Buy from RPGNow About … And Our Tummies Growled Being hungry isn?t fun, whether it’s a character or a player. Unfortunately, you can?t just say ?I eat my rations? and be done with it. That’s where this cookbook comes in. Getting together with a group of friends to game is just like any other activity – food almost always gets involved. Many game sessions run after work, during some meal time, or you simply like to snack while you play. This cookbook is a collection of recipes the author has used for her own gaming sessions and other casual entertaining. There are 35 recipes, one per page, and many have suggestions for variations on the dish. All the recipes in …And Their Tummies Growled are designed to be cooked quickly the day of the game, in a crockpot, or can be done in advance when you have more time. Some of them actually taste better the day after they?re made. None of them require fancy equipment (unless you call a crockpot, food processor or a blender fancy), nor do they have complicated techniques. Additionally, each recipe should cost $3 or less per person, if you buy inexpensive or on sale ingredients. …And Their Tummies Growled is compatable with Acrobat Reader 4.0, and comes in a zip file containing the recipes and two versions of the cover (one in full color, the other greyscale) in seperate PDF’s. The 10 page demo is compatable with Acrobat Reader 5.0, and contains the greyscale cover, table of contents, introduction and four recipes.  Gamer’s Haven Episode 78 – Gaming Systems | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:06

In this episode, we talk a bit about game systems, and running them.  It’s a bit broad and generic, but we get a bit long in the tooth when it comes to Savage Worlds and others.  In the Three Parter, Nathan reviews Dead Space 2, Jeremy talks a little about What He’s Into, and Ethan has a shameless plug … Running Time on this Episode is 83 minutes. About Dead Space 2 Dead Space 2 is a survival horror third-person shooter video game developed by Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 andMicrosoft Windows. It is the sequel to Dead Space. Unlike its predecessor, Dead Space 2 has a multiplayer mode. A Collector’s Edition is available for all three platforms. The PlayStation 3 Limited Edition includes Dead Space: Extraction as a PlayStation Move compatible title. About Ex-Illis In Ex illis, you play on a large battlefield divided into ‘zones’ and the units move from one zone to another. On a unit’s turn, you choose between the various actions available to your unit in the Rule Keeper software, such as attacking, charging or casting a spell. The screen then shows the miniatures fighting, blocking or evading hits, so both players can witness the results of their actions on enemy troops. The physical battlefield gives you all the game’s macro information (the General’s view), while the Rule Keeper software shows one zone at a time (the soldier’s view) in more detail (Hit Points left, status effects, etc). This means you create all your strategies by looking at the battlefield, and you feel like you are right in the thick of the action as your troops exchange blows with the enemy. Here’s a brief overview of the gameplay… About KantCon On July 9-11, KantCon 2010 was held at the Johnson County Community College Regnier Center. Over the course of the three days, 110 gamers came from as far away as Mt. Gilead, Ohio to participate in role-playing games, card games, board games, miniatures games, and the kind of camaraderie that all gamers love and enjoy.

 Gamer’s Haven Episode 77 – Fears | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:43

In this episode, we take another look at roleplaying and running fear, but not in the same sense as before, way back in an early episode (3 or 4 or something).  We talk a bit about invoking a fear response and doing it responsibly, and a bit about fear in a game. In the Three Parter, Nathan talks a little about What He’s Into with the retro PC game, Pool of Radiance from SSI.  Ethan raves a bit on Conspiracy Theories and how they make games better.  Finally, Jeremy reviews the new AMC television series, The Walking Dead. Running time on this episode is 95 minutes. Commodore version of the box cover for the game About Pool of Radiance Pool of Radiance is a computer role-playing game developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc (SSI) in 1988. It was the first adaptation of TSR‘s Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D or D&D) fantasy role-playing game for home computers. It is the first in a four-part series of D&D computer adventure games. The other games in the “Gold Box” series used the game engine pioneered in Pool of Radiance, as did later D&D titles such as the Neverwinter Nights online game. Pool of Radiance takes place in the Forgotten Realms setting, with the action centered in and around the city of Phlan. Just as in traditional D&D games, the player starts by building a party of up to six characters, deciding race, sex, class and ability scores for each. The player’s party is enlisted to help the city by clearing out the marauding inhabitants which have taken over. The characters move on from one area to another, ultimately confronting the powerful leader of the evil forces. During play the player characters gain experience points, which allow them to increase their capabilities. The game primarily uses a first-person perspective, with the screen divided into sections to display pertinent textual information. During combat sequences, display switches to a top-down perspective. Generally well-received by the gaming press, Pool of Radiance won the Origins Award for “Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Computer Game of 1988″. Some reviewers criticized the game’s similarities to other contemporary games and its slowness in places, but praised the game’s graphics and its role-playing adventure and combat aspects. Also well-regarded was the ability to export player characters from Pool of Radiance to subsequent SSI games in the series. About Conspiracy Theories Conspiracy theory was originally a neutral descriptor for any claim of civil, criminal, or political conspiracy. However, it has become largely pejorative and used almost exclusively to refer to any fringe theory which explains a historical or current event as the result of a secret plot by conspirators of almost superhuman power and cunning. Conspiracy theories are viewed with skepticism by scholars because they are rarely supported by any conclusive evidence and contrast with institutional analysis, which focuses on people’s collective behavior in publicly known institutions, as recorded in scholarly material and mainstream media reports, to explain historical or current events, rather than speculate on the motives and actions of secretive coalitions of individuals. Scholars argue that conspiracy theory goes beyond the boundaries of rational criticism when it becomes non-falsifiable. Such a theory is a closed system of ideas which explains away contradictory evidence by claiming that the conspirators themselves planted it. The term conspiracy theory is therefore often used dismissively in an attempt to characterize a belief as outlandishly false and held by a person judged to be a crank or a group confined to the lunatic fringe. Such characterization is often the subject of dispute due to its possible unfairness and inaccuracy. According to political scientist Michael Barkun, conspiracy theories once limited to fringe audiences have become commonplace in mass media. He argues th[...]

We end things with some brief random encounters before we let things be. About EN Publishing EN Publishing is the publishing arm of EN World.  EN World is a role-playing game news and reviews website, which has grown from the earlier “Eric Noah’s Unofficial D&D 3rd Edition News” site (which was active from 1999-2001).
