The first shipment of Fiat automobiles to be imported to the Port of San Diego arrived at the National City Marine Terminal on July 18, 2013. The Port marked the historic occasion with a press event, following the offloading of the first the shipment of 370 Fiat Model 500L cars. Pasha Automotive Services, operator of the135-acre terminal, recently secured a new three-year contract for the receiving, processing and distribution of the Fiat vehicles. The company expects that 40,000 Fiats will arrive through the Port annually with 12,000 units anticipated for the remainder of 2013.

The waterfront along the Port of San Diego's North Embarcadero is changing. Construction of a 105-foot wide public promenade is getting underway, now that traffic lanes have been moved to the east, as part of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan. The Port hosted a public event to mark the milestone in Phase 1 of the construction project. "NEVP" will also contain public gardens, shade pavilions, new landscaping and other amenities. Phase 1 is due to be completed in the summer of 2014.

With thunderous booms, the monstrous South Bay Power Plant crumbled into history, following a successful implosion along the Chula Vista bayfront on the morning of Saturday, February 2, 2013. For the first time since the late 1950's, Chula Vista has an open view to South San Diego Bay. The land can now be used for future parks, as designated by the Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista as part of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan.

The Port of San Diego’s 2012-2013 cruise ship season began on September 21, when the Disney Wonder made the first of four stops to San Diego. The inaugural visit was marked by a ceremonial plaque exchange which took place onboard the vessel between Disney Wonder Captain Fabian Dib, City of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Port Commissioner Bob Nelson. The Port of San Diego is the third largest cruise port in California, contributing a significant number of travel, tourism, agriculture, ship repair and maritime-related jobs to the region’s economy.

The Port of San Diego and the city are celebrating a new jewel on the waterfront. The newest gem is Ruocco Park, the Port of San Diego’s 18th dedicated public park overlooking San Diego Bay and the city’s downtown skyline. The park is named after Lloyd and Ilse Ruocco. Mr. Ruocco was a prominent San Diego architect, who designed dozens of private homes around the region and worked on several prominent public buildings, including the County Administration Building. The Port of San Diego plays an important role when it comes to National Security: it is one of only 17 strategic commercial seaports in the United States. The Port of San Diego is the fourth largest port in California. Its maritime terminals provide the infrastructure and services necessary to support military deployment activities, which can range from getting vehicles and equipment where it needs to go, to shipping household goods to servicemen and their families. Six officers with the Harbor Police Department have a critically important job. These homeland security officers are specifically trained to search for explosives and narcotics – and they can do it all in one sniff. The Board of Port Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday, August 14, granting Dole Fresh Fruit Company a 24.5-year lease to import and export fresh fruit at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. Dole began its operations at the Port of San Diego in 2002, after moving here from the Port of Los Angeles. Through this new lease, Dole has chosen the Port of San Diego to remain its West Coast hub for operations. After a decade-long, joint planning process between the Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista, the California Coastal Commission unanimously approved the 556-acre Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan (CVBMP), on Aug. 9, 2012. The CVBMP is the largest available coastal development opportunity in California. The Port and Chula Vista will no begin the development phase with the goal of transforming the currently underused industrial waterfront property into a world-class resort and conference destination, complemented by a mix of residential, retail, and more than 240 acres of parks and nature preserve.

When fires threaten San Diego's waterfront, the Port of San Diego's Harbor Police Department is properly trained to immediately respond and contain the situation. The Harbor Police Department is the only law enforcement agency in San Diego County that dually-trains its members as police officers and marine firefighters.
