Undergraduate Chapel: Spring 2014 [Video]

President Barry Corey speaks to current and prospective students about the unity of learning content and gaining contentment. He encourages students to place as much emphasis on growing spiritually as they do on gaining factual knowledge. Dr. Corey reminds students of the assets they have at Biola and encourages them to take advantage of these.

Dr. Scott Waller argues that politics, because they are a moral enterprise, carry a particular importance for Christians. He urges his listeners to participate in politics by taking the truth claims of Christianity into the public square and cautions against believing the lie that Christianity has bearing only in the private sphere.

Kevin Bennie, After Dark Chapel Graduate Intern, addresses the ever-present question, "What will I do with my life?" He shares his own experience of making plans, changing plans, and following God's leading. Bennie explains that all work can be God's work, and what is most important is having a personal relationship with God at the center of one's life.

Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse explains the damaging effects of the sexual revolution that has occurred since the 1950s. She argues that the advent of "no-fault" divorce has resulted in a radically impaired perception of marriage and a loss of personal freedom. Dr. Morse urges her listeners to remember the children of these broken marriages, who often experience the most damage.

Drs. Scott Rae, Tim Muehlhoff, and Tamara Anderson discuss the sanctity of life as it relates to the issue of abortion. Dr. Rae addresses the climate of the discussion as it currently stands and why taking a biblical approach to abortion is so important. Next, Dr. Muelhoff considers what role graphic images can play in the abortion discussion. Finally, Dr. Anderson reminds her listeners to love and have compassion for those who have been affected by abortion.

Dr. Todd Pickett leads students in a time of reflection on the value of close relationships. He looks at Scripture's portrayal of love and how that sheds light on humanity's common struggle with shame and guilt. Dr. Pickett reminds his listeners that they are all fully known and loved by Jesus.

In celebration of Black History Month, students present various art forms celebrating the stories of black Americans. The participants present rap, spoken word, dance, and narrative, among other artistic expressions and urge their listeners to reflect on how they can hear members of their community who are or have been marginalized.

Dr. Archibald Hart explains relational intimacy at the neurological and psychological levels. He considers how modern technologies have detracted from the ability to relate to others, how this can be combatted, and some affirmative practices that can improve one's capacity for meaningful relationships.

Dr. Tim and Noreen Muehlhoff share with students their insights into dating and the pacing of romantic relationships. The couple explains the trends of younger generations to rush relationships both emotionally and physically, and they offer some practical ways to avoid these pitfalls.

Lisa Igram and Chad Miller discuss the core meanings of vocation and calling. Igram encourages her listeners to remember that their most central roles are to love and obey God. Miller urges his audience to be willing to simply walk with God as the pieces of their lives come together to form something beautiful, even if it is unexpected.

Dr. Todd Pickett considers how Christians can discern the voice of God amidst the noise of life. He explains the ways that the approach, content, relevance, and effect of the voice of God will be evidently different than the voice of sin in one's life.

Provost and Senior Vice President, Dr. David Nystrom, speaks at the Spring 2014 Convocation ceremony. He invites his audience to consider what is the point of studying at Biola University. Dr. Nystrom explains that the goal should be whole-person eloquence, or "beredsamkeit."
