WARBIRD RADIO – When it comes to vintage aircraft display pilots few can touch the of experience Warren Pietsch.  According to his Pietsch Aircraft biography, Warren began flying at a young age and soloed on his 16th birthday. In 1980 Warren joined his father Al and brother, Kent in the Air Show industry performing at shows across the U.S. and Canada. In addition to flying Air Shows, Warren was a captain for a major airline for 20 years flying Lockheed 1011, B-727, B-737’s worldwide. Warren has accumulated over 26,000 hours of flight time in aircraft ranging from gliders, J-3 Cubs, antique aircraft and vintage WWII aircraft.  Warren continues to operate the family business his father began in 1957. Pietsch Aircraft Restoration & Repair, Inc. is located in Minot, ND. They offer flight instruction including both glider and power aircraft. The shop crew remains busy rebuilding several antique aircraft, maintaining customer aircraft, and engine work. Warren & Brian started the Minot Aero Center together and opened it’s doors for operation December 31, 2009 and it has been growing ever since.  In addition to his work at Pietsch Aircraft, Warren is the Chief Pilot for the Texas Flying Legends Museum and an active participant at the Dakota Territory Air Museum.  Just the links below for more information.  Thanks for tuning in. WARBIRD RADIO – Dave Homewood and Grant McHerron are back with a new broadcast.  The guys are joined this month by deHavilland Hornet restorer Corin McCrae.  In this episode of The Wings Over New Zealand Live Show, Dave and Grant return after a long break, and as well as a round up of news and happenings from New Zealand and Australia, Dave also talks with guest Corin McCrae of Aerowood.  Corin’s business, Aerowood, is all about crafting the wooden parts required to rebuild or repair classic wooden aeroplanes. Unlike many companies rebuilding wooden aeroplanes however Aerowood uses computer CAD technology and a CNC automated cutting machine.  Personally Corin has created wooden parts for all sorts of projects from Tiger Moths to SE5a’s. But most famously Corin has been involved in rebuilding the wooden structure of several de Havilland Mosquitoes as flying projects. Two of them now flying in the USA – KA114 with Jerry Yagen’s Military Aircraft Museum, and TV959 with Paul Allen’s Flying Heritage Collection. The third flying Mosquito project, Rod Lewis’s PZ474, should hopefully fly sometime in 2018.  And Aerowood has another exciting upcoming project, working with Pioneer Aero Restorations Ltd of Ardmore, and that is the de Havilland Sea Hornet TT193 project that is planned to be restored to fly too. He talks about all these projects and more. WARBIRD RADIO – Jason Capra joins Matt Jolley with an update on the Beach City Baby C-53 restoration project.  Mr. Capra is the President of Vintage Wings, Incorporated a Pennsylvania 501C3 non profit corporation that owns the historic C-53.  The airframe is believed to be one of a handful of aircraft surviving today used in Operation Torch.  The historic operation opened the North Africa campaign of WWII and served as America’s test bed for fighting the “new” war.  The “Baby” played a vital role in transporting leadership to the theater and abroad.  Since Mr. Capra’s last visit, some major progress has been made on the “Baby” and we’re looking forward to hearing the news on this episode.  As always, your calls and comments are welcome.  Just use the contact information posted below. WARBIRD RADIO – Chris Henry is the Museum Program Coordinator for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and he’s joining Matt Jolley on this episode of Warbird Radio LIVE!  One of his principal duties is reuniting World War II veterans and their families with the aircraft they flew in combat.  Over the years, Chris has developed a wonderful presentation on the B-17 that details stories that have come forward from the veterans he reunites with the B-17.  Chris has made the slides available from his presentation for tonight’s broadcast. WARBIRD RADIO –  Boeing F-18 Experiment Test Pilot John Tougas, joins Matt Jolley on this episode of Warbird Radio LIVE!  John Tougas is an Experimental Test Pilot based at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. He supports all aspects of the technology development, acceptance and demonstration flight operations for the F/A-18 Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler and P-8A Poseidon aircraft. According to his official biography, Tougas was the lead test pilot for the Advanced Super Hornet technology demonstrator, conducted autonomous landing flight tests on the QF-16 drone during initial testing and flew air refueling flight tests in the TA-4J Skyhawk for the 767 Italian Tanker program. Tougas joined Boeing in 2009 after a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy. He entered the Navy through an ROTC scholarship earning Bachelors in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in 1988. He received his Navy wings of gold in 1990 and returned Georgia Tech where he earned a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering in 1991. In 1992, Tougas completed initial F-18 Hornet training as the top graduate in his class and joined his first Fleet squadron, VFA-195 Dambusters home ported in Japan. During this tour Tougas made numerous deployments to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf flying combat missions in the F/A-18C Hornet off the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CV-62) in support of Operation Southern Watch. In 1996, Tougas was assigned to Naval Air Station China Lake, California, as an operational test pilot with VX-9 where he led several F/A-18C project upgrades. In 1997, Tougas graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) in Patuxent River, returning to China Lake as a developmental test pilot in the F-18 Hornet and Super Hornet. In 2000, Tougas returned to the Fleet for his Department Head tour where he completed numerous deployments throughout the Western Pacific embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) including supporting Operations Noble Eagle following the September 11th terrorist attacks. In 2002, Tougas was assigned as the Officer in Charge of a Navy detachment to the Air Force Flight Test Center’s Nellis detachment. During this tour was the Chief Test Pilot of a classified prototype air vehicle and flew multiple types including F-18 and F-16 fighters. In 2003 he was inducted into the Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP) where he served on the Membership Committee for 2 years. In 2005, Tougas returned to Japan for a third Fleet tour as the Carrier Air Group (CAG) Operations Officer. During this tour he orchestrated several multi-national exercises and managed the training and readiness resources for nine Fleet squadrons over six deployments aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) to multiple locations in the Western Pacific while maintaining combat currency in the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Tougas’ last assignment in the Navy was serving as the Executive Officer for the VX-23 Salty Dogs at NAS Patuxent River, Md., where he flew many tests on F/A-18 projects and served in SETP as the East Coast Section Chairman. He retired from the Navy on March 2009, with the rank of Commander. His flying experience includes more than 4300 hours of flight time in more than 30 different types of aircraft. He has logged more than 3,000 F/A-18 hours including over 600 carrier arrested landings on eight aircraft carriers. Tougas is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the Naval Aviation Safety Officer School. His awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, two Navy and one Air Force Commendation Medals, one Navy and one Air Force Achievement Medal. He is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Maryland Civil Air Patrol and serves on the SETP Board of Directors as the Secretary. Matt also welcomes Jason Capra from Vintage Wings Inc.

Col Jerry “Jive” Kerby (USAF Ret) always seems to be flying something exciting.  Lt Col Kerby is Vice President, Operations for Draken International and an internationally known air show pilot. Retiring as a Lt. Colonel from the United States Air Force in 2006 after 23 years of service, Jive amassed over 3400 hours in the F-15 Eagle and over 400 hours in the F-4 Phantom. After graduating at the top of his pilot training class, he was awarded an F-15 Eagle training slot and eventually went on to graduate from the USAF Fighter Weapons School in the F-15C. During his 7 operational tours in the F-15C, he was awarded numerous TOP GUN awards, including the Top Element award for the 1992 William Tell Air To Air Competition. A combat veteran, he led over 20 missions in Desert Storm (SOUTHERN WATCH) as an overall Air-to-Air Mission Commander. Jive was also a military liaison and instructor pilot for the Royal Saudi Air Force and was instrumental in establishing the first ever F-15 Fighter Weapons School for that country. During the final two years of his USAF career, Jive transitioned to the F-4 Phantom as the Commander of the 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron and became the USAF’s first F-4 Heritage Flight Pilot. Jive is the only civilian Certified Flight Instructor in the F-4 (non-military) in the U.S. and is also a CFI in the T-33 Shooting Star, T-28 Trojan, the L-39 Albatross, MiG 15/17, and the MS760. He holds a Surface Solo and Formation Aerobatic card in the F-4, L-39, T-33, T-28, MiG 15/17, and MS-760 and has performed in over 250 airshow performances. Since his first solo flight on his 16th birthday, Jive has accumulated a total of over 12,000 flight hours in over 50 different types of aircraft. WARBIRD RADIO – Tim Chopp founder of the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation joins Matt Jolley with a full report on their C-97’s recent post restoration flight.  On November 7th 2017 the Angel of Deliverance took flight after a lengthy restoration with Tim Chopp and his crew.  Tim’s organization is no stranger to operating large four engine aircraft.  Since 1988 the foundation has owned the Spirit of Freedom C-54 and they’ve told the story of the Berlin Air Lift to countless people.   Matt also welcomes International Council of Air Shows President John Cudahy with news on the airspace privatization efforts underway in Washington.  This proposed legislation would dramatically effect the air show industry in the USA and subsequently the operation of vintage military aircraft.  Hear both stories tonight (11/14/17) starting at 8pm ET.  To join the conversation just use the contact information posted below.
