Everyman Endurance Podcast featuring the U.S. Olympic Committee's media teleconference with 2012 Olympic qualifier Sarah Groff and two-time Olympian Allyson Felix. After dealing with injury for much of last year, Groff's breakthrough season continued last weekend as she placed seventh at the International Triathlon Union World Championship Series event in London to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. It marked her third top-seven finish on the 2011 WCS circuit and moved her into sixth in the WCS rankings. A long-time member of the USA Triathlon National Team, Groff placed third at the 2011 WCS event in Austria on June 19 to mark the first-ever podium finish for an American female in the event. A two-time Olympic silver medalist and three-time world champion in the 200 meters, Felix will be looking to make her third Olympic appearance in London and is currently preparing for the upcoming 2011 IAAF World Championships, which run from Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, Korea. She became the first-ever sprinter to win U.S. titles in the women's 100, 200 and 400 with her 400 victory at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. A three-time world outdoor 200 champion, she will run both the 200 and 400 at the world championships and is considering pursuing the 200/400 double in London. This weekend Team USA will be in London racing the next round of ITU World Championship triathlon series.

The race venue in London will be the very same one that will host the Olympic Triathlon in 2012. 

To make the race even more important to American Olympic Distance Triathletes the race will also serve as the first qualifying race for the 2012 London Olympics for the U.S Olympic Team.

The last two weeks the American Triathletes have help a mini triathlon camp in London in preparation for this weekend’s race.

Recently Roman Mica had a chance to chat with Rob Urbach, (USA Triathlon’s new CEO) about the upcoming London race, the  American pro’s who’ll not only be gunning for a win, but also for a spot on the Olympic team. The two chat about the upcoming race as well as the state of triathlon in the United States. According to USAT: “Urbach joined USA Triathlon in March 2011 as the ninth CEO in the history of the National Governing Body. One of the most accomplished and talented executives in the sports industry, Urbach possesses more than 20 years of proven leadership experience. They call it – “the most mentally and physically challenging endurance event in the world.” It is the Death Race and the marketing for the race says, “you may die”. Only 200 people every year can take part and thousands are turned away according to the race’s creator Joe DeSena. What’s more interesting is that only about 20 to 40 of the amateur athletes that start the race actually finish. Some of the tasks of the Death Race include: Crawl through a muddy trench, under barbed wire Jog a mile upstream in the river carrying a 20-lb tree stump At the wood-chopping station, split 20 logs Hike a mile uphill and recite the first 10 US Presidents’ names. Miss one and you need to go back down to try again. Study a collection of Legos. Run a mile uphill and then using only their memory or notes reassemble the Legos Slog a mile south in the river.
