Campfire Conversation With Michael Waddell, Novice Hunter Prepares for Dall Sheep Hunt of a Lifetime & Killing Ducks Quick & Clean W/ ‘The Finisher’ | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:04

Over the years, we’ve had some great discussions with Michael Waddell. This was unscripted visit was no exception. I really had no idea where I wanted the conversation to go, so we just winged. I think you might even hear a cold beer crack open in the background. Are Rio Grand Turkey’s really less intelligent that their Easter cousins? How do you convince your spouse that you have to go on the hunt of a lifetime when you’ve already been on 5 hunt of a lifetimes this season? What issue does Michael see that we need to do a better job of policing ourselves at as a hunting community? All that and much more. Then we’re joined by First Lite’s Tag Spenst – Director of Digital Marketing. Tag recently drew a coveted dall sheep hunt at the 2018 Sheep Show in Reno, Nevada. Funny thing though, Tag’s hunting experience consists of killing one duck and one quail. We get his take on what it was like winning that hunt and the preparation he’s put into getting ready for hunting Dall Sheep in Alaska’s famed Brooks Range. Our friend David Maestas also jumps on to tell us about a unique duck hunting product that I believe belongs on every waterfowler’s lanyard. “The Finisher” is a quick and humane way to put down those cripples that every one of us has seen flopping around the pile of dead ducks. Yeah, the one you though you’d rung it’s neck only to see it twitching 10 minutes later. As ethical sportsmen we need to be better than that. ‘The Finisher’ is the solution to that problem.

The Green Decoy, Shotgunning With Kent Cartridge and Digital Scouting With On X Maps | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:05

Our old friend Land Tawney – CEO of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers makes his return. We discuss a variety of topics including the #greendecoy hashtag that can be found all over social media in recent months. Land explains what the GreenDecoy claim is and where it stems from. Somehow, Land along with BHA became the poster child for this smear campaign on various conservation organizations such as BHA, Trout Unlimited, The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership and others. We also discuss Utah Senator Mike Lee’s plan to turn over all federal land to state control. What would that mean for the future of hunting and conservation in our country? Why would a U.S. make this notion in the first place? We dive into that and also cover getting our own kids into the outdoors with us. (Photo Randy Newberg) Kent Cartridge is a known for making great shotgun loads. I’ve always found that their waterfowl loads (Kent Fast Steel) give you the best bang for your buck on any duck or goose loads. Andrew Howard jumps on to discuss some new stuff that Kent has coming out this fall. I am certainly looking forward to shooting the Diamond Dove 12 gauge dove loads this fall as well as the Teal Steel early teal waterfowl loads. Andrew also talks about their bismuth non toxic loads (now available in a 25 round box) and Kent’s other innovations in shotgun loads. Dylan Dowson- Community Manager of OnXMaps rounds out the broadcast. He gives us the history of OnXMaps from the beginning to where the company is today with over 100 employees. I talk about how I have used OnXMaps in the past and Dylan discusses how he thinks I should use them going forward. Sorry Garmin, those GPS units might be a thing of the past…

Renown Nature Photographer on Why He Plans to Thwart Grizzly Bear Hunt & Going Deep For Big Bull Reds | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:39

You can catch them off the jetties, you can catch them in surf and you can head for open water in search of monster redfish. On this week’s show we discuss chasing open water bull redfish with my longtime friend Captain Josh Guenther. I recently had the pleasure of joining Josh on a trip out of Port O Connor, Texas where we got into some 40 plus inch bulls. First we had to hit the back of the bays to catch bait, then we headed out to 40-50 feet of water and started hammering them. Josh tells us where to find these over sized redfish and at a pound an inch, it’s easy to see why this 43 incher wore my arms out! Then we’re joined by world famous wild photographer Tom Mangelsen. Tom recently drew a Wyoming grizzly bear tag for the fall 2018 hunt- the first grizzly hunt the lower 48 will have seen in forty four years. Like so many opponents of the Wyoming Grizzly Hunt, Tom entered the draw to try and thwart the sustainable use hunting of a recovered grizzy population. How does he plan on saving the life of a grizzly bear and why is that important? The USFWS delisted the bears and has decided the population had reached carrying capacity in the Greater Yellowstone area, why does he feel he knows better than trained wildlife biologists? We step inside his mind on this week’s show. After Tom says his piece, I will go back through our discussion and point out all the erroneous information that he spits out. By the way, this man has made millions of dollars photographing grizzly bears. But what has he actually done to help conserve them? (Photo Tom Mangelsen)

14 Foot Hammerhead Causes Public Outcry, The Lone Star Tick Responsible For Red Meat Allergies in Human Victims & Namibian Prime Minister Attempts To Ban Trophy Photos | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:09

Ray “Poco” Cedillo has been targeting big sharks for the better part of 2 decades. His recent hookup with this 14 foot greater hammerhead made national headlines when the fish died. Poco jumps on to set the record straight regarding land based shark fishing and it’s role in conservation and research. These guys are as passionate a group as you’ll find and often get an unfair bad rap. You won’t want to miss out on hearing the tale of this catch of a lifetime! Then, if you haven’t heard of the Lone Star Tick and the potential health risks it poses, well you need to know. Texas A&M Professor Dr. Maria Esteve-Gasent has made it her life’s work to study ticks and the diseases they can carry. We discuss the red meat allergy that the Lone Star Tick can cause in human beings. Dr. Maria Esteve-Gasent also sheds some light on other parasites and diseases caused by the bites of certain insects. Next, Dallas Safari Club Executive Director Corey Mason discusses the recent mandate from Namibia’s Minister of Environment and Tourism. A mandate that hunters and safari companies refrain from posting any trophy photos of animals they harvested (while hunting in Namibia) on their social media accounts. Corey gives his take on whether this type of ban is a good or bad thing for the hunting community in general. Also, what recourse does the Namibian Professional Hunters Association have moving forward?

Jim Shockey on Cougar Attack and the Hand of Man Museum, Is Lab Grown Meat A Threat to Hunting? And Telling A Story From Behind the Lens With GTS Productions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:51

Memphis Meats is one of a handful of companies whose scientists are growing meat in petri dishes. They are backed by Bill Gates and Tyson Foods to name a few investors. Why should you and I be afraid as hunters, anglers and ranchers for that matter? For me it’s easy to see the writing on the wall. Why should people kill and eat animals when they have a lab grown alternative available for you to purchase at the grocery store? Make no mistake, this is about money. I give my thoughts on the state of affairs. Then our old friend Jim Shockey jumps on. We spend some time talking about his new ‘Hand of Man Museum’ which recently opened in British Columbia. The museum is essentially Jim’s life work as a collector. Both from a hunting and cultural perspective. The interactive museum (narrated by Jim) is open to the public and free, certainly something to put on the short list of things worth visiting. Then, we dive into the recent events that took place on Vancouver Island when an adult male cougar attacked Jim and his cameraman. Had Jim not have been chambered and reacted so instinctively, he might have been killed that day. He breaks down the chain of events that lead to the attack and why this cougar was emaciated and desperate enough to try to attack a human. You might be surprised to hear the role wolves play in the equation. (Clip for the actual attack) (Jim with the cougar after having dispatched it during a close call) We wrap things up by discussing story telling from behind the camera lens. This art form is something I think we aspire to be better at as hunters and anglers. My friend Pierre “Ozzie” Pins has been my camera man for 2 safaris to South Africa. We discuss what goes into capturing the essence of a hunt as well as the trophy photo itself. Thanks to John X Safaris and GTS Productions for the amazing memories they’ve captured on film. (Ozzie doing what he does best)

Veganism/Vegetarianism Could Lead to Mental Health Issues, When Crappie Attack & the Latest Innovation From Elite Archery and Slick Trick Broadheads | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:36

If it’s not one thing it’s another for outfitter/fishing gudie and my longtime friend Greg Pavur. You might recall our interview last summer after Greg was tagged by a 10 inch rattlesnake. Fast forward to this summer and he was back in the hospital for multiple surgeries after getting a crappie fin (spine) stuck in his leg! Lots of laughs during this discussion between old friends. Next we spend a couple segments with Dr. Georgia Ede. The nutritional psychiatrist joins the conversation to discuss animal protein and it’s affect on our mental health. Fascinating stuff! I truly do feel sorry for vegans and vegetarians who are starving their brains of necessary vitamins and nutrients found in meat and animal fats. We then check in with Larry McCoy of Elite Archery and Slick Trick Broadheads. If you haven’t shot the new Elite Ritual, I highly recommend it! Larry also breaks down the latest from Slick Trick and discusses his plans for the upcoming fall hunting season.

Wildlife and Witch Doctors, Mountain Hunting for Vaal Reedbuck, Wildgame Carpaccio & South African Biltong & Bowhunting The Black Death | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:13

This is the South Africa Episode! We tackle the culture, hunting, food, and spirit of this beautiful country with our friends from John X Safaris: I just returned from spending a week hunting with my good friend and Professional Hunter Carl Van Zyl of John X Safaris. We start off by discussing a very unique member of the Tiny 10 Antelope, the Vaal Reedbuck. You’ll have to tune in to find out what makes this thing so weird, but after putting my hands on one, it just might be the most odd animal I’ve hunted. Carl talks about some of it’s unique features as well as the unforgiving terrain we had to traverse in order to get into position to take a shot at this ram. Then we spend some time revisiting Carl’s childhood and some of the things he did in order to make money as a young boy. Fascinating stuff he’d collect and sell to the local witch doctor there on South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Next, Lee Van Zyl (Carl’s sister) jumps on to discuss traditional South African food and culture with me. Lee runs the kitchen at the John X Safaris camp and to say her cooking is divine, would be a gross understatement. The different wild game preparations we ate in camp were as mind blowing as they were tantalizing. Lee discusses how she prepared some of my favorites, like the wildebeest carpaccio pictured below. Plus, if you’ve ever heard of Biltong, here is your chance to find out how to make the meaty treat! We round out the show by visiting with professional bowhunter and PH Martin Neuper. The joke around the John X Safaris camp is that Martin is the PH you’d assign to Chuck Norris if he was in camp. When Marten is hunting, animals tend to get killed! During this chat, we focus on bowhunting Cape Buffalo, a nerve racking undertaking for even the most polished of archery hunters. Martin breaks down what poundage and grain arrow/broadhead one needs to cleanly take down a cape buffalo. This is not an animal you want to pursue after being wounded due to an insufficient amount of kinetic energy.

5 Pieces You Need in Your Early Season Arsenal, Hardcore Carnivore’s Jess Pryles on All Things Meat and Cerakoting Firearms, Ammo Deals and More with Trent Gilley of Overstocks and Bargains | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:10

If I am going on an early seasons archery elk hunt, chasing spring turkey or black bear or sitting in a treestand first week of October, these are the items that will be on my back or in my pack. Obviously I am loyal to First Lite, but if you prefer another brand, then find something in their lineup that is similar to these 5 pieces from First Lite. I’ve been backpacking a long time and these items are as functional and comfortable as it gets for mild weather. Next, the Hardcore Carnivore herself Jess Pryles jumps on to talk all things MEAT! A self made social media persona, respected author and meat ambassador of all kinds, Jess talks about her background and the lack of grilling/smoking/BBQ culture in her home country of Australia. She moved to Texas 8 years ago and has been soaking up the cooking and hunting culture like white bread in BBQ sauce ever since! We also discuss her dry aging process (see below) and the differences between dry aging beef vs venison. Also, get ready for a duck fat based caramel flavor explosion like you’ve never experienced! Good things with as big a meat fanatic as you’ll find. Then our old friend Trent Gilley from Overstocks and Bargains drops in to talk cerakoting firearms, bulk ammunition buys, gun safes and a few specials that Overstocks and Bargains are offering to Lone Star Outdoor Show listeners. (Where else are you going to find 100 rds of 9mm ammo for twenty bucks?)

Bowfishing For Trophy Alligator Gar, David Blanton on Faith and Hunting & What’s in a Rub with Wild Bill of Texas Select Seasonings | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:10

Last week I had the pleasure of chasing trophy alligator gar with Extreme Bowfishing and our February 2017 Photo of the Month Winner Zach Welch who won the trip as the grand prize for that month. Zach and his buddy Kale flew down from Nebraska and we met up with Captain Cody Sole for a day of flinging arrows at big gar. Cody put us on the fish and the Nebraska boys each arrowed a giant alligator gar! We recount that trip but more importantly, we hit on the current status of Texas’ alligator gar resource and possible changes in the direction of their management. You might be surprised to find out that the so called ‘Catch and Release’ guides and anglers are actually hurting this fishery more than anyone realizes. (Kale, Zach and I with one of the gar we harvested- yes we ate them). Then we spend some time with outdoor legend and devout Christian David Blanton. The Realtree Outdoors mainstay isn’t shy on discussing his faith. David talks about his testimony and how his job with Realtree became his god for awhile years ago. Today he is able to use his platform to help reach hunters who might not be walking with The Man Upstairs. Recently, David also got involved with the Crossroads at Panadero Ranch ministry- a hunting and faith based program that takes young boys ages 11-16 on their first hunting experience. These boys don’t have a father figure in their house. I believe in this effort and was happy to discuss it with David. We round out the show by talking all things wild game rubs and seasoning with Wild Bill Powell- founder of Texas Select Seasonings. Wild Bill shares his diverse culinary background and we slow cook the heck out of some venison shanks, talk some hog hunting, chili pequins and much more! ( A few of Wild Bill’s most popular blends)

Public Land Hunting Ethics, Montana Black Bear and Triploid Grass Carp As A Management Tool For State Wildlife Agencies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:20

Asian grass carp first started showing up in North America around the mid 1960’s. By 1975, they could be found in 40 states and currently call 45 states home. This was no accident initially, as state wildlife agencies explored the idea of using grass carp to help manage or control aquatic vegetation. Today, state wildlife agencies still use this fish in certain situations. The only difference being that released fish are sterile. Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries District Biologist Marco De Jesus joins the show this week to discuss triploid grass carp and how his division employs the service of this fish. We also take a look at the relationship Inland Fisheries has with the Management Authority of a said body of water. At the end of the day, fishing opportunity is not why lakes were created. So, that relationship with the management authority of “X” water body is paramount for Texas Parks and Wildlife to work with them to increase good angling opportunity. Then we spend a couple segments with my good friend Luke Sterling who recently invited me up to Montana for a spring black bear hunt. Luke is a lifelong Montana native and is the most hardcore backcountry hunter I’ve ever had the pleasure of hunting with. I’m not gonna lie, keeping up with this mountain goat was not an easy task for a flatlander like myself. We recount our hunt and discuss a situation that occurred on our hunt that really made me question the ethics of some of the members of our hunting community. Poor hunting ethics and etiquette shouldn’t be tolerated. It simply is bad form and can lead to unnecessary conflicts.

Grip and Grins, The NRA and Nepal Blue Sheep Hunting with YETI’s Ben O’Brien & Illinois Public Land Bruisers and Accubow’s New Interactive Archery App with Matt Pell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:41:10

We kick this week’s show off by visiting with YETI Cooler’s Ben O’Brien. Having worked for the NRA prior to YETI, Ben offers a different take than most on the YETI/NRA public dust up that occurred recently. It was a bad look for the hunting/2nd Amendment community and we discuss why. Then, we hit on Grip and Grin trophy photos. You know, the one where the hunter poses proudly behind a dead buck, strap of ducks, turkey or otherwise. Is the Grip and Grin giving the opposition fuel in their fight to snuff out hunting altogether? I’m not sure, but it’s worth discussing. Personally, I am all smiles after a successful hunt and I don’t hide it. But some folks are starting to lean the other way, interesting topic no doubt. Then we dive into big Midwest public land bucks with Accubow founder and CEO Matt Pell. Matt has been bowhunting big tracts of Illinois public land since his boyhood years and he isn’t shy about naming some great places to try and arrow a Midwestern bruiser. Of course we also get into the new interactive archery app that Accubow recenlty released, the first of it’s kind. Stay tuned for an awesome giveaway in the coming weeks!

Texas Legends Episode 432- Featuring Gary P Nunn, Nolan Ryan, Takahiro Omori and Dr. Deer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:20

Since I was in Montana bear hunting last week, I went through and found some audio from over the years that I figured you might enjoy. Many of you have probably heard some of this before, but for those who haven’t, enjoy! Gary P Nunn, Nolan Ryan, Dr. Deer and Takahiro Omori make up this week’s Texas Legends Edition of the show.

What’s in A Barrel? Instagram Targeting Pro Hunting and Second Amendment Pages & Catching Up with Vortex Optics at NRA Show 2018 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:42:37

If you’re like me, you purchase a rifle, add optics, take it to the range to zero and then go hunting. But there is alot that goes into the barrel of that rifle. Alot of which I had questions about but never had the answers until our bud Derrick Ratliff of Horizon Firearms jumped on this week to discuss everything that goes into making a rifle barrel and how that relates to it’s accuracy. Derrick breaks down the 3 most common types of barrel compositions. We also discuss twist rate, barrel lenght, fluting, fouling your barrel, differences between custom and factory barrels and much more. (Custom barrel in the making by Horizon Firearms) Next we dive into social media platforms attack on pro hunting and 2nd Amendment pages. Our friend Beno Khodabakshian recently had his 75,000 follower Instagram account @TrophyBoars deleted without warning and without explanation. Instagram hasn’t responded to his attempts to contact them. Beno and I discuss the reality that Instagram is out to get our community and attack our way of life. This type of censorship borders on absurdity since people have the right not to follow or look at certain images. Beno also comes from a unique background, born in Armenia and relocated to Iran in his early years, Beno talk about wild boar hunting in Iran and offers insight as to why there are so many wild hogs in many Muslim countries. Beno has enjoyed hunting Texas hogs for the past few years after moving to the Houston, TX in 2014. We round out the broadcast by talking optics with our old buddy Mark Boardman of Vortex Optics. I had the chance to sit down with Mark in the Vortex booth at the recent NRA National Convention in Dallas. We discuss the latest and greatest for 2018 and Mark shares some interesting stories from Vortex customers.

Putting the Black Panther to Bed, Urban Coyotes/ Catching, Cleaning & Cooking Catfish/ Mrs. Smith’s Take on Trophy Rooms and 10 Years of Marital Bliss | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:12

Late spring means the blue cats are spawning! Our old friend and longtime guide Greg Pavur of Pavur Outdoors drops in to break down where and how he’s pulling good numbers of blues over the rail. Also, Greg walks us through the easiest way to skin a catfish. What about his favorite catfish recipe? We discuss all that and much more. Next,we dispel the urban legend of the black panther with Texas Parks and Wildlife Chief Mammalogist Jonah Evans. Black Panthers do not exist in North America since Mountain Lions don’t possess the recessive black gene. Yet, people still claim on a regular basis to have seen a black panther. Jonah gives us an explanation as to what they are likely seeing which isn’t a black cat at all, but more likely a mountain lion in poor lighting conditions or some kind of shadow being cast on the cat. The cat below is a black jaguar, and jaguar and leopards are the only big cats in the world that can have the black appearance but again, although their range once consisted of parts of Texas, the last confirmed Jaguar was killed in Texas back in the 1950s. We also get into Jagurundis and ringtail cats during this in depth discussion. After nearly 9 years of doing this show, I never really thought about having my better half join me until recently. Erin wraps up the broadcast by joining me in studio to look back on a recent rough patch in our marriage that was caused by hunting in a round about way. We’re all smiles now, but it turns out a trophy room can take a real strain on a relationship.

Headless Bucks, Matching the Hatch for Speckled Trout and Global Issues With Dallas Safari Club Executive Director Corey Mason | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:05

Captain Nick Dykes of Triple D Charters kicks things off when he joins us from a saltwater bay somewhere on the Texas coast. We talk spring specks, downsizing baits to match the hatch, wade fishing and much more. (trout are currently gorging on big schools of glass minnows, Nick has had success throwing small spoons at them) Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dallas Safari Club Executive Director Corey Mason. We recap Earth X which saw 150,000 people from all walks of life converge in North Texas for a day celebrating our planet. This isn’t an event traditionally thought of as pro hunting, but DSC was there furthering the message and pushing the sustainable use hunting ideology to the audience. We also hit on the recent GOABC (Guides Oufitters of British Columbia) Meeting that Corey attended. The B.C. Grizzly Ban has been in the news alot lately and this meeting was focused on how to get it overturned in the next political election. Lastly, we spend some time on Tanzania’s recent turmoil concerning trophy hunting. It looked like they might be going down the same path as Kenya and banning trophy hunting all together but their government has assured DSC that they see and understand that hunting is vital for the survival of their wildlife. We wrap things up by discussing road killed bucks with Bandera County Game Warden Jason Garcia. Are you legally allowed to recover the rack of a road killed deer, what if it’s an exotic (like the below axis deer I photographed on a recent Hill Country trip), or even a varmint? What can you legally salvage? The answers might surprise you.
