The overnight markets continued to rally on yesterday's news that the European Central Bank would do whatever was necessary to save the euro. Further momentum came from better-than-expected GDP data for the United States, and this made for a fun and interesting trading session. When Mario Draghi and the European Central Bank pledged "to do whatever it takes to save the euro", the global markets did an about face and sharply pushed higher coming into the open of the US trading session. This positive sentiment was further aided by lower-than-expected US jobless claims, and solid second quarter earnings from 3M and ExxonMobil.
