Sine came to VSO with a Masters in Tourism. She had lectured at several Universities in the UK. Nareena Switlo graduated from the University of Victoria in Anthropology with an extensive background in the entertainment and tourism sector. She went to Zanzibar as an independent volunteer and then was recruited in country as a CUSO-VSO volunteer.She is working as a volunteer is our secure livelihoods program at the Jambiani Tourism Training Institute. It is operated by a Canadian based NGO called Hands Across Borders.Students from all over Tanzania apply for a 2 year free program that gives them the tools and experience to work in the tourism sector. The students work in the restaurant for their practicum. Guests, students and other NGO's help to support JTTI in a unique model of giving back.I was on holiday visiting Nareena, who is my daughter. As a mother I can say that I am proud of her contribution and growth. Volunteer for a better world! Duncan Etches spent two years at the Tafari Makonnen school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A graduate of UBC, first in Chemistry and then medical school, Duncan remembers the the value of learning from his placement overseas. Duncan has remained interested in global issues, as well as local. Susan Anstine (formerly Susan Mary Smith) served with CUSO in Sunyani, Ghana from 1965-67 as a French teacher. Susan recalls some of the difficulties of her time in Ghana - the bugs and homesickness - but also the rewarding relationships with her students and other volunteers. Eva Murray was an elementary school teacher for 10 years before transforming her life with a CUSO placement. After going back to school for a sociology degree, Eva accepted a placement in Nigeria as a teacher. She worked for the Ministry of Education as an education officer at a teacher training college. Noba Anderson served with CUSO-VSO in 2000-01 in Indonesia. She worked on community forest projects with the Silva Forestry foundation, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Currently, Noba is involved in local politics on Cortes Island, BC.
