Richard was based in Vanuatu, but also travelled to other places along the Pacific: the Soloman Islands, Papa New Guinea, Figgle, and Fiji. Owen Gaskell worked in a teacher training college in East Malaysia from 1973-1975, providing post secondary trainings for teachers. He reflects on his experience overseas with his partner, and daughter. On assignment, he worked in the Educational Psychology department where he taught teaching techniques. He says, he gained an interest in working with special needs students, and later pursued a career in counseling psychology upon returning. Volunteer for a better world! Pamela Thompson worked as a social worker and a psychologist in Alberta before being placed in the Philippines. Once in the Philippines, she worked in the Women and Children Friendly Center providing service to women and children who were victims of violence, in particular domestic violence.Thanks Pamela for all your hard work and dedication. Doug Piquette worked as a Community Developer in Northern Alberta and Bangladesh. Doug applied his experiences and skills in Peru for a term of 5 years by developing marketing projects for small villagers that were trying to export medicines. Karina Hurtadi, from Peru, living in Canada, worked in Bolivia for three years as South to South Volunteer. She was part of a Prevention Program in which she worked with young women who were street vendors, and tried to prevent them from becoming street kids. In many instances, she served as a role model to these young women, and tried to achieve her goal by building trust amongst these women and herself. Volunteer for a better world! Linda Gascoyne served as a school teacher in PNG teaching Home Economics in 1991-1992 then returned in 2004 to teach Math until 2007. Because of the tribal war that happened in PNG, the schools were closed, but Linda still managed to teach the kids out of her home. This incident occurred in her first visit. During her second visit - in 2004 - Linda was able to teach under better circumstances. She taught "Math through Baking", which her students enjoyed and this was a great way for everyone to learn!"Thanks Linda for sharing your story! You sure are a team player! Heidi Tyedmers has an Honours BA from the University of Toronto in Anthropology and Biomedical Ethics, and an MA from the University of Victoria in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Oceania. She worked for CUSO in Vanuatu. In Vanuatu she worked for the Vanuatu Young People Project which mostly focused on young people and some of the urban settlement areas. Volunteer for a better world! Graduating from Sir George Williams University in Montreal at age 21, Wayne Jackson received his pre-departure training at McGill, and then worked as a school teacher in West Africa for two years.
Receiving her pre-departure training at McGill, Nina Jackson was flown to Western Africa on a military plane. In Ghana she worked as school teacher.
Former board member at VSO, Ninfa Ares left Canada in the aftermath of 9/11. She served in Rubia, which is a small village that is located north-west of Tanzania. Bob Ganier, Tanzania Bob, a wildlife veterinarian, studied at UBC and University of Saskatchewan. In Tanzania he did research on anthrax wildebeest and got anthrax himself.
Hans- Henning also known Henning served with us in Southern India with a hill tribe that was pushed into the jungles of the Nilgiri Hills. His project was inspired by Dr NarasimhanHenning wrote to his mother and his fiance many letter that have now been published in a bookwww.henningpaniyas.caThis is an amazing story of an experienced and education agricultural specialist who got to know a community and continues to make a difference.Since his service Henning worked with CIDA in Kenya on wheat breeding, Ethiopia on a gene bank.He retired from the Lethbridge research station in Alberta.Volunteer for a better world!
