Followup From Last Week From the comments from last episode: The landing gear "bug" you talked about in the Catalina is not a bug. That particular model is a non-amphibian model and that is a non-retractable gear that was clipped on by divers so they could take the Catalina ashore. I should also add that the gear was strictly for beaching purposes only and would not have been strong enough to be landed on (they would have obviously been removed once the Catalina was returned to water). Avsim.com Update It looks like Avsim.com has put up a placer page on their website with more information on the situation. Here is the latest status report from Tom, as of Saturday May 23rd: "Our team at the NOC are reporting that the contents of WWW.AVSIM.COM may be recoverable. Data for *.net (the library and the forums) and *.org are still to be determined. What this means is that the web site and its reviews, history, and all of our hosted sites may be able to be brought back online sooner than we had anticipated. I am still concerned about the forums and the team is working on the library. Everything depends on how much damage was done to the NAS." He comes back later and says: "I have just received some very good news. With a lot of help from individuals pulling together from around the world, including experts in data recovery, we have been able to confirm that the web site will be brought back and so too will the forums. We are transferring data, as I write this, to a temporary storage unit and that process will take most of the night. Once we have the data in the storage system, we will then transition the entire web site and forums on to the new servers." Tom has also stated in the temporary forum that the 2009 Avsim Fancon scheduled later this Summer is still a go for all attendees and vendors. They have set up temporary pages for members and vendors to sign up.  FSBreak 17: Avsim Hacked, MyTrafficX, and a new 100 Dollar Hamburger! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 123:30

Avsim.com Hacked Avsim was hacked on May 12th 2009 in such a way that it would seem unlikely that it will return. Tom Allensworth made this announcement: "We regret to inform the flight simulation community that on Tuesday, May 12, AVSIM was hacked and effectively destroyed. The method of the hack makes recovery difficult, if not impossible, to recover from. Both servers, that is the library / email and web site / forum servers were attacked. AVSIM is totally offline at this time and we expect to be so for some time to come. We are not able to predict when we will be back online, if we can come back at all. We will post more news as we are able to in the coming days and weeks...". "I want to provide everyone with a non-technical view of what took place yesterday and last night so that some of the rumors that are already starting to spread are corrected. During the early evening yesterday, we noticed that some alarming things were starting to happen on our servers. The first sign of an issue was that some functionality disappeared on our web server. That progressed to not being able to access the web server via FTP or SSH. Finally, the web/forum server tripped offline. Next the library/email server started to exhibit issues. We went in to reboot it, and that is when it failed entirely. The partitions on both of the servers had been removed. We shut down both servers until we can get a technical member up to our Network Operations Center (NOC), and do a comprehensive inspection of the damage. I have seen some rumors and speculation already on the various forums in the community, and I would like to make sure that everyone knows the facts. Here are some: Early in the evening, I sent out a bulk email to all forum members letting them know that we anticipate shutting down the Web/Forum server for a period of time. About a third of the way through the process of sending that email to all 60,000 forum members, the hacker succeeded in bringing the server down. The email was did not get sent to everyone. The reason I sent the email, based on what we knew at that time, was because that a minimum, we would need to shut the web/forum server down to inspect the unit and do repairs. At the time the email was sent, we were unaware that a hack was in progress and that our system would be taken offline entirely. There were no hoaxes involved, as some have asserted." When asked about the subject of Backups... Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers BETWEEN servers. That is, GREEN, our library server, would be backed up to PURPLE, our WEB/Forum server. That way, if one or the other failed, we would have a back up on the remaining active server. The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation. As of current, Avsim has set up temporary forums here: http://linux.myalbemarle.org/forums Via various sources... [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link]. We are still taking comments/screen shots/suggestions about last week's flight! Check out the Show Notes for last week for more details on how to participate! Aerosoft Catalina Released The PBY Catalina is without a doubt one of the most famous flying boats ever build. After its first flight in 1935 it quickly transformed into the PBY-5A amphibian model that it is best known for. Despite its strange shape it became a true work horse of many air forces and navies and kept patrolling the oceans for decades. It had many roles, search and rescue, any shipping or anti submarine patrols or long range reconnaissance. To this day the Catalina is well known to millions and a guest of honor at many air shows. Features: 11 Different Models based on the PBY-5, PBY-5A, and PBY-6A. Different flight behavior for all different models that are checked with all available data and by current Catalina pilots. Now this is said a lot for FS add-on aircraft, but one Catalina operator is actually using this product for simple training in the winter when most Catalina's are hangar queens. Impressive and powerful sound set, you actually will be able to tune the engines using your ears. Aerosoft Sound Module that adds sound to switches, controls and events. From hydraulic pumps to the sound of the engines problems, this creates a far more immersive environment. Two different cockpits, one typical for the 1940s and 1950s and one as many Catalina's are flown today (with modern radio and GPS equipment). Cowl flaps, floats and landing gear has better simulation of influence on drag. More realistic water operation by use of additional coding. Manual (400+ pages) in two parts, includes full actual operational manual of one of the few PBY-5A's flying at this moment. Gauges and Instruments: All instruments done in full 3d. Highly realistic Bendix King radio stack (feel free to download the real manuals and use those!) Highly realistic and complex Bendix King KLN-90B GPS receiver Realistic simulation of the Sperry A-3A (Jack #38; Heinz) Autopilot for the vintage model. The newly developed Interactive Checklist helps you to prevent problems by showing the correct settings with red or green checkmarks. It even includes sound effects and allows you to configure the aircraft for take-off or for a complete dead and cold setup. Added Simulations: Non standard and far more realistic calculations of engine temperatures, taking cowflap position, ambient air temperature, fuel/air mixtures setting, airspeed and engine heat generation into account. Accurate electrical load and hydraulic pressures calculations. Realistic cold engine startup, requiring use of engine primers and fuel boosters. Realistic auto mixture that controls auto rich and auto lean. Realistic carburettor icing that takes moisture and carburettor air temperature into account. Structural icing that will accumulate ice on the structure, adding weight until the aircraft becomes unflyable. Non standard engine failure module that includes sparkplug fouling, damage caused by excessive cylinder head or oil temperature, shock cooling and more. Power reduction due to excessive carburettor air temperature. Price: 27.95 EUR (~32.00 USD) [Link] via Fszone.org [Link]. Screenshots: [nggallery id=26] Airport Design Editor Updates to V1.40 Airport Design Editor is a graphical design tool to create and enhance airports for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It takes it's inspiration from the excellent AFCAD2 developed for FS9 by Lee Swordy. ADE does for FSX what AFCAD does for FS9 and adds support for new FSX features such as fences, jetways and terrain. ADE is being developed with the help of a small group of dedicated airport designers with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Version 1.40 Features: The major new function is the Visual Approach Designer. In the past creating approaches has meant writing xml code and repeatedly checking it in FS. With Version 1.40 we have introduced a graphical interface for approach design that mimics the FSX GPS Display. ADE is available as a free download from the author's website, and a full feature list for 1.40 can be found there. More more information on ADE, look here [Link], Via FlightSimX.co.uk [Link]. X-Plane: First Impressions Eye Candy I liked: Moving traffic on roads, like in FSX, I think it adds a lot of realism. Power lines, Again, I think this adds some realism to the mix... AI Trains Runways slope with terrain (Something MSFS has been struggling with for some time) Night airports look incredible. Features I liked: Simulator ran very smooth, and tended not to stutter even in high autogen (Is this what it is called in X-Plane?) areas. Water #38; Wave Configuration More key combos, overwhelming at first, but after they're all set up they come in handy Ability to assign a macro-like function to a key. X-Plane has more helipads, all of the local hospitals and even the Police helicopter station down the road from my house were in X-Plane. The Ugly: Joystick controls sometimes buggy, needed to reverse certain functions when it seems like they shouldn't need to be reversed, etc. Still having intermittent issues with plane veering to the left. Default aircraft models.. Suck (Honestly), addons are better, but not the quality of MSFS freeware models (Ex. Project Opensky), or Payware models (PMDG, etc). Helicopter controls are very touchy, could not actually get a heli airborne without flipping it. Flight Physics seem to go crazy at times, for example I've been able to drop 500-1000 feet in a cessna, go back up 1000 feet, drop 1,000 feet, and then pull out and recover all in about 3 seconds. I've never flown a real plane, but doesn't seem likely. Normal flight physics seem OK. When adjusting the weather, I set "Precipitation" to "None", yet it still rains. I'm probably missing a setting though. Compared to FSX: Amount of addons? Smaller airports just aren't up to par with MSFS. For example, KCVG looks like a parking space with three runways, larger airports like LAX look good, though. While it may seem like a small feature, FSX is loaded with real world road data from Navteq, which also supplies data to GPS makers, and is used to recrea...

Avsim System Redesign in Progress Avsim.com Writes: The management from AVSIM is pleased to announce that a total system redesign is underway. Our first priority is to do a complete remake of the file library system. That will be followed with a front page, and major functions redesign. Our goals are simple; clean up the library, add functionality and increase reliability. As we are sure that most users have noticed, the reliability of the library and the speed at which is serves our users are decreasing. We know that this is a function of outdated architecture and a reliance on backend systems that are much more hardware intensive than they can be by updating to today's latest technologies. We plan to implement similar changes within the AVSIM web site as well. Modern, fast, and reliable are our goals. Another significant goal is to converge user ID's and passwords. We want to have a user database that allows access to all functions, library and forums as the two most prominent examples, with one User ID and Password. We will be keeping you up to date on these improvements over the coming weeks and will most likely announce the opening of wide area BETA Testing in some areas soon. Stay tuned for mor...

Heli Traffic 2009 is the first Flight Simulator add-on that adds realistic AI helicopters that take off and land vertically, fly like helicopters and use helipads and not runways. This innovative product brings it's own AI engine that fully controls AI helicopters, instead of relying on FS to fly them. This allows a much greater degree of control, which translates into a realistic helicopter flight behavior... Heli Traffic 2009 also allows you to create your own helicopter flight plans, and now has been updated to support FS9... Price: $24.95 [Link] Adaptive Lighting in FSX? It sounds incredible, but it really works (NVidia card needed, newer models only 9xxx and later, probably 8xxx as well - couldnrsquo;t test it on ATI, yoursquo;ll have to try yourself): This little .dll adds HDR to FSX in DX9 - without noticeable impact on framerates (at least on newer cards). Itrsquo;s the same effect you see in Half Life, for example, and it mimics the eyersquo;s adaption to bright light and darkness. All you have to do is to open the archive, copy the DLL and the ini-file into your FSX directory and start up FSX to see the effect. What happens is that colors become more vivid, the image is less flat and it now makes a difference if you look into the direction of the sun or away from it. Even during the night, it adds more realism. The effect works windowed or in full screen. Be careful, you might become addicted to it. If you have the ldquo;affinity maskrdquo; setting in your fsx.cfg, you should take it out in order to keep high frame rates. To see the dll in action, have a look at this clip on youtube: You can find more info via SimFlight [Link] or YouTube [Link]. Comment from Juan on FSBreak 8 about FSX and multicore. [Link] Phil Taylor is quoted saying that "FSX will scale up to 256 cores". Does FSX use 8 cores? CAN FSX use 8 cores? Quoting an article from Phil Taylor in 2007 about FSX's multi-core capabilities: Today Intel announced their new 2.93G QX6800 Quad Core processor. As part of this press release, Aces Studio participated with a quote about our improved multi-core support in SP1. The quote stated ldquo; The latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator* X, Service Pack One (SP1), due out later this month, is a great match for the extreme multi-core processing delivered by the new Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processorrdquo; ldquo;Flight Sim X SP1 greatly increases multicore utilization and will scale as more threads are available leading to reduced load times as well as frame rate improvements and greater visual complexity during flight. The Flight Simulator team at Microsoft is pleased to work with Intel to provide our end users with a great gaming experience." Our multi-core support will take advantage of both 2 and 4 cores today, and more cores in the future when they become available via a config setting. This is for both Intel and AMD processors. At render time, we run the terrain texture synthesis on threads across the cores. During flight on multi-core machines, as terrain and terrain textures are loaded you will notice significant multi-core usage. As all tiles are loaded, the multi-core usage will fall off, this is expected. As the terrain is re-lit, approximately every minute, you will see multi-core usage increase. As you bank and load terrain tiles, or as you fly forward and force a load of more terrain tiles, you will see the multi-core usage increase. Note - hyperthreaded is not multi-core. Our current plan is to treat HT machines as single-core since we noticed extensive collisions between threads which caused stutters. You can find the article here [Link]. This article was written in April 2007, and since then FSX SP2 has been released. Here is an important bit of information: The new Core i7 It is a physical 4 core CPU, with 4 logical cores - Otherwise known as hyperthreading, which makes it look like 8 cores to the OS. Since the release of SP2, the "Not Using Hyperthreading" statement could be false. Tweak FSX for 8 Threads As it turns out, some members are able to 'unlock' all 8 'cores' (or all 8 threads) by making some changes to the FSX.cfg file. Change the "AffinityMask" entry to "AffinityMask=255" if you are a core i7 user, there are reports that this may help with the problem. You can also set it to 254 to leave 1 core free for programs other than FSX that require CPU, such as TrackIR, etc. Members report that using AffinityMask=255 helps with loading speed, but not in game stuttering! Here is a link to the AVSim Forum post [Link], and more information about AffinityMask from Phil. [Link] Members on AVsim report the the method that BEST helps stuttering #38; FPS is AffinityMask=15, With hyperthreading off. Final Intel Core i7 overview here at AVSim.  FSBreak 8: Most Expensive Home Built Flight Simulator, Problems for Computer Pilot Magazine, and Sully?s Flight! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:51

Hosted by Eric McClintock, #38; Joe. Listen Here: Subscribe to automatically get the latest podcast: iTunes, Zune, RSS XML, E-Mail, All Other. The World's Most Expensive Home Built Flight Simulator Matthew Sheil, owner of a trucking parts company, has the most expensive home built flight simulator, an almost exact replica of a 60 Million dollar 747-400 simulator, cost him just $300,000 to build. The simulator is housed in his Sydney Australia warehouse. The cockpit features: Over 45 different software programs running on 14 different computers. He rents out the simulator to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and then donates the money earned from the rentals. His Simulator offers full motion. Matthew also is a real life pilot and owns a beechcraft baron B58, and says he prefers flying the real plane but enjoys the limitless posibilities of the simulator: He says: In the [real] plane I fly, you take off and you point it in the direction of Melbourne and you press a button and away it goes until you come into land, whereas a simulator you can do whatever you want - if you want to fly upside down, fly upside down, If we hit a mountain or the ground the simulator just freezes in its current state and everything goes red - and then we just hit reset. You can find the news article here [Link], or find moe information on Matt's website. [Link] More Pictures: [nggallery id=9] Show us your home cockpits! (Correction, in the podcast I stated that they have gone for 3 years on a monthly release date, the actual time is 7 years.) Robert, the owner of the popular Computer Pilot Magazine, sent out a note to subscribers explaining that they are selling less, and hence the cost have gone up, forcing him to reduce the frequency back to once every TWO months instead of once per month. Computer Pilot started as a bi-monthly and then went monthly in 2003. While we enjoyed 7 years of month-after-month issues, a recent slowdown in readership and advertiser support due to the toughened economy has forced us back into the bi-monthly schedule. They also state: Donrsquo;t worry, wersquo;re not planning on going away any time soon. In fact wersquo;re taking this opportunity to regroup and recreate a better magazine with a complete new look and improved content based on reader feedback. So while it will be 2 months between issues, they will be ldquo;betterrdquo; issues from this point forward. If you are currently a subscriber, donrsquo;t worry, you havenrsquo;t lost anything. You will still receive the number of issues that you are signed up for. If you have 8 issues remaining in your subscription, you will still receive 8 issues. Nothing else will change. Computer Pilot will be a better magazine with a new and improved look and improved content, published and delivered every other month. View the article on SimFlight here [Link], or see the release directly from Computer Pilot Magazine here. [Link] X-Plane releases "Sully's Flight" for as an iPhone Application Based on X-Plane, 'Sully's Flight' starts you on runway 4 at LaGuardia in an Airbus A-320, at similar time, weather, and weight conditions to that fateful flight. YOU will fly the plane yourself, following hoops plotted in the sky showing Captain Sullenberger's approximate ACTUAL flight-path... This will let YOU fly the same profile Sully did, from take-off right through to landing... all with realistic physics and accurate land and river placement. As well as the actual location, airplane, time, weather, and flight-path, the ACTUAL radio transmissions are played at the right time, giving a full immersion into the actual 5-minute flight... and with flight physics that are accurate enough to make it very similar to the real plane. Randazzo is the founder of PMDG and an Airline Transport rated pilot with more than four thousand hours of pilot in command experience. He has flown nearly two dozen aircraft types from Cessnas to restored warbirds and holds type ratings on five aircraft types from the BAe JS4100 to the Boeing 747-400. Robert has been working on, under, or near airplanes since the age of fifteen, and spent almost all of the past twenty years in the airline business. He began his career with United Airlines as a part time cabin/lavatory cleaner working an overnight shift, but, convinced that such endeavors would eventually lead to the flight deck, Robert capitalized on many job opportunities presented by United. He served on the employee team that opened Denver International Airport, served as a Negotiator/Account Executive in Washington, DC., was a member of the Critical Incident Response Team, and was a member of UAL's operational management team at Washington Dulles International Airport. In November of 1999, Robert accepted a First Officer position flying Jetstream 3200s for United Express carrier Atlantic Coast Airlines out of Washington, Dulles Airport. In January, 2001, he upgraded to Captain flying the Jetstream 4100 on routes throughout the eastern United States. A year later Captain Randazzo was promoted to the Chief Pilots team where he assumed responsibility for drafting an airlinewide operational plan that was largely credited with giving industry leading on time performance to Atlantic Coast Airlines and follow on carrier Independence Air. Robert has been involved in flight simulation since 1981 with the release of SubLogic Flight Simulator for the Apple II. Founded PMDG in 1997 to bring his real world experience to the simming community. Find this story on Avsim [Link], and learn more about the 2009 FANCON event here. As many of you know Mike Stone has retired from the simming community and model development and has no desires to return to the hobby of model creation, modification or revisions. However, Mike has graciously granted permission for me to host for download all of his aircraft via the GJSmith.net sitehellip;hellip;rdquo;. ldquo;hellip;.. This is an excellent opportunity to gather together all 107 of Mikersquo;s models and make them all independently available to the simming community from the one spot. To facilitate this I have created a web within a web which is exclusively dedicated to presenting all of his aircraft over several pages. The web pages now contain download access to all of the Mike Stone Aircraft. The new pages are herehellip;.rdquo;. View the article on SimFlight.com [Link], orgo straight to the website here. [Link] Out thoughts: We respect Mike's decision to keep control of his property, but the site can use some work (A search function and more robust server for starters) and the copyright can be loosened up a bit as it currently does not even allow the FS2004 aircraft to be converted to FSX by the community... [Link] Air Hauler Previewed Air Hauler is an automated program that allows you to manage all aspects of your own air cargo company, and fly the flights in FS2004 or FSX. Features: Airline startup options, you get a plane and a small amount of cash to grow on. Manage multiple companies as their own entity. Complete airline route, airport, and financial information. Each airline has a base, Air Hauler will import your custom airports from FS2004 or FSX. Each airport has a startup cost and a monthly lease. It is able to automatically suggest possible airport candidates to add to your inventory. Remembers where you left off your game progress. Even if in the middle of a flight and Flight Simulator is shut down, next time you start the game it will pick up where you left off. Fuel prices vary from region to region, airport to airport, and between different fuel types that your aircraft require. It also pulls the oil price from the internet to reflect the real world price of fuel. The program assigns jobs that need to be flown, and you are able to filter them and fly the ones you want tom and expire after 72 hours. You are able to adjust FS settings such as time and simulation rate without penalty. Aircraft limits are enforced. If your cargo is over weight you are not allowed to leave the airport. For a fee you may have the airport remove some fuel to make your aircraft lighter, and you are able to make stops for refueling, but careful flight planning is required! Any aircraft can be used, freeware an payware. However, aircraft must either be purchased or leased. The price depends on the condition of the plane. Loans can be taken out to lease or purchase assets, and there are different loans available with different terms and interest rates. Air Hauler even includes a stock market feature. You can use your company's cash to purchase shares of real world companies at current market prices that are downloaded from the internet. All costs are automatically determined from your flights and company. Including airport use fees, fuel, aircraft repairs, insurance, and loan fees. At a certain point in the game, you are able to hire on virtual staff. Pilot's skill levels differ, as do their salaries and efficiency. Complex flight planning can be used for the flights flown by you. The game is currently in late beta and will be released for FS2004 and FSX priced at $36.99 from JustFlight.
