Hosted by Eric McClintock, Mark Stewart, Danton Berube, and Brendan Farmer. Listen Here: Movie Talk: One Six Right The Romance of Flying is an independent film about the general aviation industry as seen through a local airport. Within a short period of time, it has achieved a passionate following and presence among pilots and aviation enthusiasts worldwide who see the film as being able to communicate their passion for aviation. Concurrently, the film has garnered both local and national political attention in the United States as an accurate depiction of general aviation and its important contributions to all aviation industries worldwide. Building Recreational Flight Simulators Released This is a broad ranging introduction to building a flight simulator for recreational use. It touches upon most aspects of simulator building. Because the focus is on recreational rather than training simulators, the common thread throughout is improving the flight simulation experience rather than building a picture perfect training device. Each topic is presented in terms of what it can do to enhance the illusion of flight and deepen the sense of immersion. This provides a means for prioritizing where onersquo;s time and hard earned cash should go. The book is intended for hobbyists, and takes a strong hands-on approach. There are many projects, both large and small. However, even the most enthusiastic DIY-er, will occasionally want to buy rather than build. I feel it is important to present at least some information about purchase options. (From other vendors, not me!) This is something of a risk. Our hobby is small and does not support many vendors. Frequently, new vendors learn the hard way and vanish overnight. Portions of the book might rapidly go out of date. Nonetheless, making the reader aware of options other than building seems valuable. Hosted by Eric McClintock, Mark Stewart, and Brendan Farmer. Listen Here: X-Plane.com Website gets a facelift! Check it out, a lot of great and easy to find information! Rise of Flight available in box and download Rise Of Flight is the latest in a long list of PC Flight Simulators featuring air combat over the Western Front during the First World War. Together with the Battle of Britain this era is known as 'the pinnacle of aerial combat'. The best pilots from both sides met in the sky, they were matched equally with machines and conditions not favoring either party. Nothing but the pilot's skill determined the outcome. Flight Simulator fans have always appreciated the simplicity of the aircraft and weapons of this period which allowed the pilots to focus on the dog fight and not on the systems. Listener Questions Great YouTube Flight School Resource As Mark and Eric know, I have flown combat flight sim in the past. I am currently a beginner venturing out for more realistic flying. One tip I have is to understand how runways are numbered. As I have started flying the hamburger flights, it is sometimes a challenge as a beginner for simple things like runway numbers. I found a series of videos on YouTube by a gentleman by the name of "georgewscott". One of those videos is a short video on how runways are numbered. It is a short #38; very easy to understand video. The link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eAI3bQWAcw Ted Best Video Card Settings? Could you tell me or point me in the direction for information on how to adjust optimal settings on a video card for FSX? My motherboard is an AMD dual core 2 gig mem with an ATI: HD3600 series video card with 512 mem. Some info to include would be nice such as fast write on or off? antialiasing feature controlled by the card or by FSX? And so on. Thank you, Bob Lacy This looks like a great resource to get started on: http://www.highflightsimulations.com/recommended.html I also just found that trial and error is sometimes the best way to go too, since not everyone's system is exactly the same. Try tweaking individual settings to find out how each one of them affects your performance/eye candy, and then pick the best combination of them. Everyone also has different tastes too. For example Mark likes a full and smooth 20FPS with so-so visuals. But personally I like eye candy, even if I am getting a 5FPS slideshow! Helicopter Recommendations You really should check out both www.dodosim.com and www.hovercontrol.com The dodosim team create extremely accurate helicopters for FS. Their first FSX heli is a Bell 206 Jetranger. But these are not just models and paints, but full start up systems, programming that acc...

But it is enough information to get you started and then some! A huge thanks to Kyle Ramsey, from the Board of Governors (#9) for VATSIM, for joining us for about an hour and a half to talk about the in's and out's of VATSIM. Listen to the episode for the entire interview! Avsim.com File Library Back Online! A quick heads up, part of the Avsim.com file library is back online, a huge pat on the back to the crew over at Avsim who worked so hard to get everything restored! What is your average flight length?? Emails Question about Views from Rob I have recently found you on I-tunes and I am really happy that you have a show that is dedicated exclusively to Flight Sim. I have been playing around with FSX for about a year now and have only recently gotten serious about learning more about it. I have learned how to download textures and aircraft which has only served me well to make me want more. I come from a previous airline career and am working on my private license. FS is a much cheaper way to go. I did have one question... I have a heavy-airliner preference and want to change my "views" from the passenger cabin. Most of the views out of the cabin look aft of the wing. Is there a way to change this setting or am I stuck with using the views that they delegate? I prefer looking at the leading edge of the wing and the engines on the wing. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have the Captain Sim 727-100,200, the CLS 747-200 and 300, the DC-10 and the 777. I plan to get the PMDG 747-400, 737, and the MD11 after hearing your rave reviews of this company. Budget allowing. Thanks guys and keep up the good work. Rob. I remember for FS2004 there was a great payware program (It was like $10) called Active Cam which allowed you to walk around the inside or outside of the aircraft. However I don't think this has been updated to FSX... You can also check out a program called Walk #38; Follow which does the same thing and IS FSX capable. Their website is http://www.dbsim.com, however it is expensive ($30). An Accurate 737 Greetings from sunny Texas. Irsquo;m studying to complete my ATP, and will also add on a 737 type rating. Do you have any suggestions for an accurate (Complete systems, FMS, etc) 737 sim for MS Flight Sim, either 9 or X? Irsquo;ve been reading reviews on the PMDG 737 sim, and 737 Pilot in Command as well. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and I really enjoy the show. Ric Brendan would recommend the PMDG 737 with FS9. New DIY FlightDeck Book from Mike I've just finished a book which will be of interest to some (hopefully, a lot) of your listeners. It's titled Building Recreational Flight Simulators. It's a broad reference covering just about all aspects of the hobby. For details, please see my site: http://www.mikesflightdeck.com/upcoming_book.htm The page is not quite current with the final manuscript edits, but has more information than I could stuff in a single email. The book is currently being printed. I should have physical copies early in August. I just listened to your interview with Matt Ford. Last week I took in your Austin Meyer interview. Most enjoyable. Hosted by Eric McClintock, Mark Stewart, and Bill Womack. Listen Here: We talk scenery with Bill Womack A BIG thanks to Bill Womack (@bwomack) for spending some time with us to talk about his scenery projects. Check them out here: Dillingham airport in Hawaii (Aerosoft) Plum Island, Massachusetts (FSAddon) Airports in Tongass Fjords X (FSAddon) Also be sure to visit his site at http://iblueyonder.wordpress.com. $100 Hamburger: Inside Passage You have less than a week to get us your results for the latest $100 Hamburger Flight! We need to see more than just RedEye's results to keep it up! Be sure to tell us if you have flown the flight by posting in the forums or dropping us an email message at feedback@fsbreak.net! Or post them here in the forums! Recommendations Eric: Moller Skycar 400 http://flightsim.com/zview.php?cm=list#38;fid=76248 The Moller Skycar is a prototype personal VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft mdash; a "flying car" mdash; called a "volantor" by its inventor Paul Moller,[1] who has been attempting to develop such vehicles for many years. The design calls for four ducted fans - the propellers being covered which is safer and more efficient at low speeds... Yes, a flying car. Another, more practical flying car... The Terrafugia. Mark: X-Plane Falcon 7X (Free!) Check out the full manual here! Voicemails #38; E-Mails Thank You to George in the UK for sending us along a voicemail. In regards to the Aerosoft Discussion, I think we have managed to pull it up here. Re: Show Length - From Gabe Hi Guys, Just found your site / broadcasts and must say you guys are a riot. Never mind 5 1/2 hours, I could listen to you all day ! With an average flight time in a 747 of 9 hours, it's good to have something to do enroute. It's nice to listen to knowledgeable people for a change -there's a lot of garbage on the forums. I liked your interview with 'Matchew' from Aerosoft - very interesting stuff. You should have a TV show really. Thnx again for your efforts, I will become a regular listener. Gabe Logan PS Have you tried AirHauler yet ? I'm sure Duncan would love to do an interview. Flattering... Gabe. This represents a lot of the feedback we received about the episode length. Gulfstream and Falcon 2000 Insight I listened carefully to the Mathijs Kok interview, very, very interesting. One of the interviewer (Eric or Mark?) wonders why there is no Gulfstream V (G5) modeled for FS, and no Dassault Falcon 2000 either. The answer is simple: Gulfstream and Dassault companies don't want to have their aircraft modeled in FS. I have been discussing for years with Dassault Falcon (I am in France, it is easier) to get an agreement with them. They are interested, but nothing has been done yet. This is why modeling a Gulfstream or a Dassault aircraft is just... illegal. Hardware Question from Mike I think that the podcast is never too long. I can't get enough. Just a suggestion, I would like to hear about computer hardware that helps or gives the biggest performance increase in FSX. It would really help those of us who are trying to upgrade to be able to run FSX well. Thanks, Mike Mike: Basically spend your money on the CPU and the Memory, and check out FSBreak 12. As part of your assignment, go to www.hulu.com (free, region limited) or YouTube.com and watch the movie ldquo; The Snow Walkerrdquo; about an Alaskan Bush Pilot. It will define the word ldquo;remoterdquo; Alaska. I have had the privilege of visiting all but one of todayrsquo;s stops and have traveled the whole length of inside passage from Vancouver Island north. It is one of the reasons I bring you this Hamburger Flight and share my passion for flying in this area to you the listener. This flight will introduce you to flying some of the northern section of the Inside Passage. It is likely 90 minutes of flying depending on the performance of the aircraft. It is back to basics again with ldquo;NO GPSrdquo; and propeller driven single or twin-engine aircraft. As a treat for our listeners that still do most of their flying in FS2004, I have included special 2004 scenery that will really enhance your experience. I use this scenery, I love it, and would suggest all FSX users give this flight a try in FS2004 using this scenery. The scenery even includes special traffic and moving Cruise Ships! Departure Point You have a buddy that that is in town from the lower states. He is staying in Haines on business. Fly over from Skagway, pick him, grab a hamburger in Honnah and then drop him at the airport in Juneau for his flight back home. Great chance to show him the beauty of Alaska from the air. "Chuck" Yeager. The second generation of X-1s, built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, were designed to double the speed of sound and set new altitude records in excess of 90,000 feet. The new X-1s were similar to the original (orange) aircraft, with the same XLR-11 rocket engine (equipped with a turbopump), but were about five feet longer, 2500 pounds heavier and had a conventional glass canopy. Due to poor in-advance registrations, the Board concluded that this year's event would not be a viable one. The Board of Directors regrets that this action has to be taken and apologizes to all who have planned to intend. If you have paid for your entry as either an attendee or as an exhibitor, your payment will be refunded in full. We will start issuing those refunds tonight. If you do not receive notice of your refund within the next ten days, please leave a note in the FANCON Forum and let us know. Again, our apologies for the cancellation. Hopefully, there will be a FANCON 2010. At the same meeting today, the Board of Directors voted to hold our Fall Board of Directors meeting in Chicago over the weekend of October 9th, 10th and 11th. Tentatively, the BOD meeting will be held at the O'Hare Hilton and we will hold our traditional social on Saturday evening, the 10th. We will be posting more details on this as our plans firm up. What do you think? Monument Valley Burger Thanks Redeye/Mark for posting his results on the last Hamburger flight! Be sure to check out his results here [Link]. Be sure to download the flight HERE [Link] which contains these instructions, and all charts/sectionals you need! Background Monument valley is an area in the Navajo Nation Reservation, which is scattered with sandstone buttes, some reaching over 1,000 feet above the floor below. Located on the Southern Utah and Northern Arizona borders, it is a popular tourist destination and sports horseback rides, camping, hot air balloon rides, and aircraft tours. You work for a small private company that specializes in airborne tours of Monument valleyrsquo;s best sights. You are the only pilot for this company of only 3 employees, so as the pilot you must strive to make the experience for your guests unforgivable. This means providing the smoothest flight possible, and the best view possible. You should use things at your disposal, such as tourist maps, and photos and other information about the spot to give the best tour possible. Your company works solely off of word of mouth advertising, and if you donrsquo;t provide the best experience possible there are plenty of other pilots who will! The Goal This is what your company is famous for, itrsquo;s ldquo;Last Call Tourrdquo;. This is right at sunset where the entire valley is lit up with the deep colors of the sun setting into the West, this is where you make your big bucks, after all this only happens once per day! You can use wither a small single prop aircraft, or a helicopter, your choice, but timing is everything. You will be taking off from 0V7 ndash; Kayenta Airport. Be sure to check out the airport information for any important information...

Interview with Austin Meyer of X-Plane "Very slow to build the team, very quick to build the simulator"... Check out all of our questions in the first segment of the podcast, we ask Austin his thoughts on the future of FS #38; X-Plane, get some secrets of X-Plane, and more! The interview also features a voicemail from George, you can listen here and hear Austin's response in the show: Also check out the new X-Plane "remote" application for the iPhone/iPod Touch! [Link] Review: Real Environment Xtreme (REX) Install The install process of REX canrsquo;t be any easier. I have never used the FlightSimStore.com wrapper, but anyone who has used the Flight1 wrapper system should find this process similar. The wrapper is able to download all files you need, which totals around 4GB of data over about a half dozen different individual files ndash; Much better than downloading each one by itself. After downloaded, you just put in your order number and serial key and away it goes. Once installed, yoursquo;re greeted with the REX Configuration Manager interface. The first thing you need to do is locate your FSX.cfg file (If it canrsquo;t find it automatically), and backup your existing default textures - very reassuring. The last step is to enable or disable what options you want to use in REX, they also let you pick your general system specs and it will determine these settings for you. Configuration Manager The configuration manager is what makes REX come full circle. It gives you FULL control over your virtual environment. Lets go through just a preview of the possible optionshellip; Sky Selection: bull; Sunrise (~12 Sky Textures) bull; Daytime (~24 Sky Textures) bull; Sunset (~12 Sky Textures) Cloud Selection: bull; 3D Clouds (~50 Cloud Sets) bull; Cirrus Clouds (~24 Cloud Sets) hellip; You get the idea. Each different texture includes a sample screenshot. In addition to the two different categories, you are also able to customize the inland water, Tropical Water, Water Animation, Runways and Taxiway Textures, and Lighting Effects (Sun, lightning, landing lights, strobe lights, runway lights). Once yoursquo;ve picked your settings, you almost forget that you are actually able to load this into FSX! The great interface and sheer number of options of the theme creation make creating a custom theme an enjoyable experience. You are also able to ldquo;Just Flyrdquo; though, and pick between a list of premade themes. Flight Planner One feature that surprised me was the ability to plan your flight using the REX configuration utility. The process is very simple, simply input your flight information (Type, Aircraft, departure, arrival, etc) and REX gives you printable flight plans, along with navigation information, and weather information. With the weather information, REX relays the conditions at the airport, the TAF forecasts, and an interactive weather map with your flight plan overlaid onto it. The Results So far everything Irsquo;ve talked about have all been pre-FSX. Once yoursquo;re ready, just click ldquo;Fly Nowrdquo; in the Configuration Manager, and REX will install the necessary textures, which takes about 5 minutes every time you change the textures, and then it starts FSX. If yoursquo;ve entered a flight plan, it will automatically load that too. Starting your flight, you will be met with your custom weather theme, and complete texture set. The clouds are picturesque, however donrsquo;t appear to be lsquo;picturesrsquo;. They look and move realistically, which is something you canrsquo;t do with just a photo of a cloud. I also noticed something right away too, the performancehellip; But something was d...

FSBreak 21: Caribbean $100 Hamburger, AES 2.0, Logitech Flight System G940, and Your Questions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 98:23

Do you have a question that you would like to ask X-Plane's Austin Meyer? Send them ASAP to us, find all of the details and our voice mail number at our Contact Us page. AES 2.0 Officially Released for FSX and FS2004 Right after you landed and departed on the runway, a follow me van will be waiting for you that brings you to the gate or parking of YOUR CHOICE. It adapts its speed to your taxi speed and even blinks its turn signals to alert you to a turn! As you get close to the gate you will see a 3d marshaller with detailed animation that guides you to your location and even signs you to cut your enigine(s). Then he plugs in his headphone and tells you the blocks are in location. At the same moment the jetway starts moving towards your aircraft and will PERFECTLY align to the door on your aircraft (any aircraft!). If the gate has dual jetways BOTH will work. Even the rubber seal that keeps out the rain is animated. When you depart the jetway is moved back (you even hear the warning siren) and the ground crew will hook up the push back truck. Of course they will inform you of progress and tell you what to do. The push back is fully automated and AES even knows EXACTLY where to put the aircraft. The push back truck looks great and even has engine sound. During the push back you are told that you can start engines (but only when the area is clear). At the end of the push back the ground crew will signal you all is clear Complete Feature List: Pushback with sound, animated objects and automatic perfect alignment Push-In for backward parking positions Pushback now available as TBL (towbarless) that lift the nosewheel and conventional that uses a towbar to move the aircraft Animated gates that link up perfect to the doors of the aircraft (unlike other system), Moving service vehicles that link up perfectly to the aircraft (catering, air stairs, cargo, buses, cleaning and refueling services) De-icing in winter Boarding passengers with sound Follow me car to show the way to the parking position (looks a lot better than those strange arrows used by Microsoft!) Sound effects while rolling over the centerline lights at the runway Simulation of water or snow at the runway Highly detailed (3d) marshaller at all parking positions that do not have docking assistance systems Detailed configuration of door/hatch location on aircraft, sound effects and vehicles Alternative configuration for AES Airports, momentarily in EDDT New sponsor mode for special airports e.g. LSZH from FreeZ How does the payment system work...? The AES Addon itself is free, however you are required to purchase "credits" in exchange for enabling AES addons at airports you pick. Some airports are free, others can cost anywhere from 1 to 5 credits. Every airport includes a 10 minute demo. 10 Credits = ~$18.00 USD. List of compatible ADDON airports and # of credits here [Link]. Link to product page, with videos. [Link, Story via SimFlight] Screenshots: [nggallery id=43] Vox ATC VoxATC is a huge advance in Flight Simulation that adds a whole new dimension to the experience. VoxATC is the first ATC add-on for FSX that has been developed with integrated voice recognition. Talk to the controllers using standard ATC phraseology and what you say will be heard. Just like in the real world, requests must be properly constructed, instructions complied with and read back correctly. Features: Fully integrated Voice Recognition Intelligent agent controllers and AI aircraft VFR and IFR flights All ATC units are included (Clearance Delivery, Ground, Tower, Departure, Approach, Center and Flight Service Stations) Unicom and Multicom operations handled Traffic have user configurable call signs and user set levels for different airspace types SIDs, STAR

Flight 1 Cessna Citation Mustang Review Reviewed by: Eric McClintock #38; Mark Stewart Click each image for original size. Installation #38; Documentation: Anyone who has ever used the Flight1 system knows that the process is extremely painless and easy. Just download the installer package from Flight1 (194MB), put in your order details and you will be on your way, or you can purchase right from the installer. One useful tip that can be gained from the flight manual is not to start a brand new flight with the Citation Mustang, instead start a flight with a different plane, any default plane will do, and once in game switch to the Mustang. This will ensure that all gauges and flight systems load properly. The product is very well documented. It includes a 93-page user manual, with plenty of visuals and sections. In order to get the full experience if yoursquo;re not a Citation Mustang expert, I would recommend printing out the manual and keeping it nearby. The manual also includes all of the checklists you need, and aircraft data. Model: The aircraft model is detailed down to the last light in the full virtual cabinhellip; But wersquo;ll start with the external model for now. The Flight1 Citation Mustang includes 6 different paint schemes, including one used for the certification test flights. It also includes front and rear baggage areas, which can be controlled through that standard Shift + E + # key commands, or a pop up control panel, and the same for the main exit. In order for any of these surfaces to be activated, Engine 1 N1 must be below 25%, which will prevent accidental opening while in flight, leading to depressurization of the aircraft. The Flight1 Cessna Citation Mustang includes a lot more than just fancy doors. As you would expect, all external surfaces are modeled. Including aircraft lights, engine fans, speed brakes, flaps, rudder, ailerons, elevator, and even communication equipment at the top of the aircraft. In addition to all of this, the pilotrsquo;s head moves according to your joystick input, a nice touch. The aircraft includes a full slew of aircraft camera views to enjoy. Going inside the aircraft is where the work put into this aircraft really shows, Most specifically in the Virtual Cabin. The virtual cabin includes dozens of ldquo;clickablerdquo; items to interact with, including seat arm rests, lights, tables, drawers, the main cabin door, even window shades and the toilet. Yes, there are even instructions in the Pilotrsquo;s Guide about how to interact with the Mustangrsquo;s toilethellip; But we wonrsquo;t be spending too much time in the cabin, lets move on to the cockpithellip; Virtual Cockpit: Before going on to the Virtual Cockpit, I think we should really start with the 2-D cockpit, which is something typically not included in a lot of modern payware packages, which is a shame because in my opinion, it comes in useful and yields better FPS than a VC. The 2-d cockpit also makes clicking switches and turning knobs easier. This model includes a full 2-D cockpit, with 6 separate viewing angles, and 7 additional pop-up panels for the Throttle, MFD Controller, Autopilot and lighting panels, and the auxiliary panel for controlling the items wersquo;ll talk about in the ldquo;extrasrdquo; section. The aircraft can be totally managed from the 2-D panel if needed. However, lets move on to the Virtual cockpit. Like in the virtual cabin, there are plenty of extras such as dome lights, map lights, and no aircraft is complete without a ldquo;Seatbeltrdquo; light, complete with the ldqu...

Mathijis Kok, from Aerosoft says on their forums: Following up on a topic on another part of these forums... Aerosoft is currently seriously investigating the development of a new simulator, directly aimed at replacing FSX. This project is in very early stages, far from even started. We are now talking to each other and developers we trust to come up with a project definition. With this definition we'll look at the market potential and finances, we are talking a multimillion Euro project here after all. Now the investments do not scare us but the building of a platform we can all agree on bothers us tremendously. If we get that wrong we lost even before we start.
