Showcasing pioneering musicians alongside their contemporary peers, the Bulleit Originals events take the audience on a musical journey demonstrating how much of the music we listen to today is inspired by original musical genres. Tracing the influence of Soul and Funk, the event on Friday 30th January at The Caves in Edinburgh will feature performances from ‘California Soul’ legend Marlena Shaw; alongside a specially created Tribute to Soul set from festival favourite Greg Wilson; the eclectic vibes of Jazzanova; and Edinburgh’s ‘retrofuturist-broken-soul-funk’ duo Digital Jones. Radio Magnetic were on hand to catch up with the VIPs and record an exclusive live performance from Martha High with her band The Shaolin Temple Defenders. Gilles Peterson’s musical prodigy Ben Westbeech kicks things off, telling us about the work on his new album and how soul has made an impact on his musical style. Jazzie B tells us a little bit about the Souls 2 Soul Soundsystem lineup appearing on stage with him and how much he’s been looking forward to playing along side Martha High. The legend herself fills us in on her experiences in Scotland and the full cycle of soul flavours that came through in her performance.
