This week I talk about the first location on my five day Tohoku (North-Eastern) Japan trip, and how I was lucky to get that extra touch for a shot, but was aided by ensuring I'd visit the site twice. Of course, as they say about the lottery, you've got to be in it to win it, so I am a big believer in doing as much planning as possible to hedge your bets, but luck definitely plays a big part in getting your shot. Switching to manual is often a little scary, especially until you master exposure. This episode is a bit heavy going, but hopefully will help you to master exposure and give you the push to try manual mode, when necessary. See other shots from the February 2004 Hokkaido shoot here: http://www.martinbaileyphotography.com/thumbnails.php?album=search&search=HokkaidoFeb2004-Travelogue See the Exposure Value or EV table in my forum here: http://www.martinbaileyphotography.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=164 Using a light meter will help your understanding of exposure, even if your camera has a built in meter. It will also improve the accuracy of your exposures too in some conditions, though not so necessary now that built-in meters are so good. My hand-held light meter is called a Flash Meter VI from Konica-Minolta: http://kmpi.konicaminolta.us/eprise/main/kmpi/content/cam/cam_Product_Pages/Flash_Meter_VI The winner of October's member award is Marisa Firpi. An original print of the photograph you chose, "Distant Tokachi Mountain", will be with you very soon. http://www.martinbaileyphotography.com/displayimage.php?pos=-663

Predominantly a nature photographer, although I try, I'm not very good at making portraits. The actual photos will speak for themselves, so you can make up your own mind about that, but the actual making of the photos doesn't come very naturally to me. My main problem is that I get a little shy when pointing my camera at people instead of animals or landscapes that don't have the ability to say "No". Afraid that I might upset the person I'm making the photo of, I get a little knotted up. I have included a number of shots in the Podcast, but I uploaded a total of 12 shots from this trip.
