People Building show

People Building

Summary: Join me in studying the psychology of the extraordinary people interviewed on the show, who have overcome extreme adversity but survived and then thrived to tell the tale... The People Building podcast is delivered by Gemma Bailey - a trainer of NLP, qualified Hypnotherapist, author, content creator and entrepreneur who has spent decades studying the mind, body and human behaviour. Using her experience from private therapy practice and training, Gemma will unpick what's going on in the minds of the most resilient people and teach you how to develop those same skills within yourself. As well as hearing about our guest's edge-of-your-seat life experiences, you'll join Gemma in studying the psychology behind the stories. She'll help you to learn to identify the subtle nuances - a pause that lasted too long, the choice of words or the underlying drivers and values - that would, to the untrained ear go unnoticed. This regular podcast greatly values listener's contributions and questions and so we invite you to fully engage with our guests and our content. We politely request that you leave a review (5 stars is perfect ;-)) and leave a comment telling other subscribers about your favourite episode so far so that they know where to begin as they dive into the back catalogue.  Passing to the Other Side: Nicole Kerr – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:53:37

Nicole grew up in a hyper-religious family – except, as her parents were from different religious factions there was no agreement about which was the right one to follow or the right way to live life. This created a great deal of rigidity in her family about how to ‘be’, and influenced Nicole’s decision to join the Air Force, where she experienced a horrific accident. As Nicole was thrust through the windscreen of a moving vehicle, tearing her body apart, her soul left her body and she found herself not wanting to return to it. Later, on the operating table, she left her body again. Years later the events surrounding this were confirmed by the operating physician. For Nicole, those crucial moments were filled with the presence of a spirit guide who convinced her to return as her work on earth was not yet complete. She not only came back, but she began to function at a whole new level, explaining her DNE (near-death experience) from a scientific perspective in her book. Nicole has had to make peace with so many aspects of her life; her parent’s style of parenting, the cause of the accident, and the ramifications of it on a physical, emotional and mental health level. Geographically, she has returned close to where she was born and in doing so, is making peace with her parents, having realised that their trauma has been instrumental in their relationship with her. There are many pivotal lessons to be gained from this. Nicole has a very flexible way of thinking about healing and recovery from trauma. Most importantly she teaches us that if you are fearing death, you will never truly live. https://www.nicolekerr.com/ Get Nicole’s Book here: https://amzn.to/3NbMqIu Watch on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/Kgp8OuF6I8w Missed the previous show?  My Missing Pieces: David Richman - ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:26:32

My Missing Pieces: David Richman – ExtraOrdinary People In his late 30’s, David was a stressed-out, overweight, smoker. He married an abusive alcoholic, with 4-year-old twins.  Domestic violence is often thought of as something that men perpetrate and women are victims of. The roles were reversed for David.  An honest friend told him some words that he needed to hear at exactly the moment he needed to hear them. It caused a journey of discovery, empowerment and most importantly, the start of a major transformation.  This also led to a book project around dealing with the emotional side of cancer.  Life Went Out of Control: Bill Heinrich – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:08

After developing a successful business and living in a long marriage, Bill Heinrich walked out on his life. Expecting a journey of self-discovery, he found himself crying in the foetal position on the floor for 3 days. Bill realised his life was out of control and was ruled by his sense of wanting to be liked and an out-of-control anger. I’ll say this; Bill has what I would term as, some woo-woo ways of thinking. He found guidance and peace using numerology – a belief in a mystical relationship between numbers and events. Do I believe in numerology, no. But do I believe in Bill? Yes. 100%. I can’t give you much of a logical explanation but Bill totally won me over. He has an excellent way of reframing and creating new perceptions with the language he uses.  If you like the ‘L’ in NLP, you shouldn’t miss this show.  My 10 Million Year Old Break Up: Caroline Holke – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:38

Caroline has always identified as a drinker of alcohol. She was not only the one who rallied everyone to have shots, she was the one who got everyone at the bar to begin with! In 2013/2014, her husband had a pretty serious health scare and her brother died by suicide that was when she went from a party drinker to someone who was drinking to cope. No one knew this, she continued to perform at work and everything looked great from the outside, but she felt like I was driving with the emergency brake on and knew that she wanted to make some changes to her drinking. Then, on a business trip in London, a colleague hit on her. Although she politely rebuffed him, she couldn’t stop thinking about the “what ifs.” That was her last hangover, in August 2016.  Losing My Identity: Michael Herst – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:43:08

Michael Herst always knew he would work in law enforcement. It wasn’t just a job, it was a way of life that fully underpinned his identity. He was drawn to this by way of positive rebellion – he came from a family that struggled with alcoholism and drug use and so it’s no coincidence that DUI enforcement became his specialism. Michael made his way up to a sergeant’s role leading him to be involved in capturing two of America’s most wanted as well as making some people important, positive impacts in people’s lives. He was on the detail for two different presidents and the prime minister of Japan. He developed skills that enabled him to talk people out of suicide attempts and dealt with cases of serious domestic violence. But the most significant thing that Michael did was not by choice. It was a reinvention of his life after a serious accident that finished his career whilst in the line of duty….  My Toxic Inheritance: Elena Perella – ExtraOrdinary People NLP Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:39

Elena Perella began to change as a teenager. Whilst this is not uncommon the change in her was not a good one. She began to feel internal discomfort and began a destructive eating disorder. Then, at 19 years old her father died and she began to realise that her choices were a consequence of her family and societal pressures. This is an NLP podcast about relationships and the most important relationship you have – the one with yourself. Using coaching strategies she put herself on a better path in life and overcame the negative behaviours she had been expressing but she faced an even greater challenge in the face of a domestic violence relationship. From looking inward, she was able to identify the toxic emotional inheritance and was able to resolve these things to avoid being derailed from her life’s path.  How I Survived the Killing Fields: Sarah Im – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:39:33

Sara Im is the author of How to Survive the Killing Fields; a story of hope, love and determination. It follows Sara’s own, true story that begins in tranquil Cambodia in the 1970s.    Studying to become an engineer, Sara had no idea that her country and the government that ruled it, was about to be overcome by a tyrannical regime that would take her to within inches of her life, whilst millions around her perished.    Wrenched from her family and forced to work in the rice fields, she had no idea what fate the rest of the country and those that she knew were facing. Sara was on autopilot, surviving day by day with each breath a miracle in its own right. But Sara never lost hope and she kept faith that one day she would see her family again.    None of this would be possible unless she had the courage to attempt an escape from the slavery she had been captured into. So that’s exactly what she did.   Sara did more than escape the killing fields. She fled the country.   Now a speaker, author and entrepreneur, Sara is inspiring people to put their challenges into perspective by sharing her compelling and terrifying story of survival.    If your socks are not blown off by this one, you need you to ask yourself why we’re friends.  Saying No to People Pleasing: Jerry Fu – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:50

After not getting the grades he would have liked (and that would have been expected of him), Jerry handed the reins of his life over for other people to set the standards and decide where he should go next. Whilst that meant that there were people who had his best interests at heart at times, and often aligned with his own ambitions, it also exposed him to situation in which he lacked control and authority.  From drive through pharmacies to coaching leaders, Jerry will share with you the risks involved in not taking ownership of your own life and decisions, being too agreeable and the dangers of getting too comfortable.  If you’ve ever heard of tough love, you’ll understand that sometimes stepping back from helping someone is the best way to get them to step up. Jerry was on the receiving end of an enabling Mum who was invested in helping him carve out the future she believed he deserved.  It wasn’t until he put himself in an uncomfortable employment situation, forcing him to live alone without a support network in place that things began to change. Unaccustomed to taking responsibility in life, Jerry found himself in a new pharmacy career, helping drug dealers benefit from drug diversion, working unpaid and even putting his medical licence in jeopardy. Was Jerry’s desire to avoid conflict so strong or was he making excuses for an apathetic attitude – what do you think? Has he now got the grit required to step up and be an entrepreneur?  I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one!  The Success Factor: Ruth Gotian – ExtraOrdinary People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:46

Ruth is a person who has studied success, written about success and achieved a great deal of success herself. This isn’t a lady who has some fluffy personal-development theories of her own, she is a Doctor who has studied the psychology of those who are the most successful at what they do.  She discovered that there are 4 key elements that unlock the secret of success.  Intrinsic motivation: You need to love it. You have to have a fire in your belly and be totally self motivated. You can do a passion audit (https://www.ruthgotian.com/passionaudit) to make sure your passion is where you need it to be. What would you do for free if you could? Perseverance: Outplay everyone else. Look at challenges differently: How do I overcome it (instead of why is it there? Reenforce a strong foundation. Do stop when you get successful. Continuous learning. Remain open to new knowledge. Consume as much as you can from multiple medias and experiences, with many different mentors. Give yourself options in how you consume the things you want to learn or master. Some key things to help you succeed at whatever you are aiming for: Know when your most productive time is – are you better in the morning or in the afternoon?  Be flexible Give it time Whenever your ready to give up, give it a little longer Reward each small achievement Give yourself a time buffer Work until its done Work in sprints – 25 min of focus, 5 min break, then take a longer break after 3 rounds. Can you simplify and get rid of the fluff? Keep an open mind to learning And once again, get a mentor! Stuart Falconer is an entrepreneur, father, qualified counsellor, fundraiser, charity founder and HR expert.  As a baby Stuart was given up for adoption and grew up as an only child to a disabled parent.
