Story
In a distant future, the planets at the outer edges of the galaxy have become a beacon to fortune seekers and those yearning for a better life off world. But there are no guarantees in deep space. Pandora, one of these distant planets, was reported to be rich in untapped mineral wealth, and so drew many hoping to get rich quick, but in the end little was found beyond the scattered ruins of a past alien civilization. With nothing to gain, any who could soon abandoned Pandora, leaving those who remained to deal with the lawlessness of a world gone bust, and the mystery of the long-dead alien civilization. But as chaotic as these times were, there were worse days yet to come. After several years the planet's huge orbit slowly brought it near to its sun and once unknown and horrifying creatures sprang from their long hibernation to terrify the stranded colonists. The only hope of the colonists seems to be a vault discovered in the side of a mountainside, rumored to contain alien technology and secrets about Pandora. Will this discovery be the colonist's salvation or their end? Discover their fate in Borderlands.

Gameplay
As in a traditional RPG, Borderlands is built around the continual leveling of characters as they delve into quests. These quests include both story-driven adventures and side quests that offer players rewards such as items exclusive to quest completion and/or forward movement of the story. Players can look forward to action set in both single player and multiplayer modes--including co-op play--as well as vehicular combat, literally thousands of different types of weapons that change each time you play and randomly generated maps and map features.

Playable Characters
Borderlands features several playable characters, each with its own unique backstory, abilities and skills. Skills can be leveled up, allowing for improvement of things like health, accuracy with weapons and capacity for items. In addition to this, characters possess unique skill tree development, ensuring that each will develop differently regardless of time spend leveling them up.

Key Game Features

  • Co-op Design - Borderlands is built from the ground up to be an exciting, intuitive co-operative experience for up to four players simultaneously that rewards players who work together and invest in co-op skills. Split screen is also supported.
  • FPS Gameplay - In this role-playing shooter, choose one of four distinct characters, each with their own individual skill sets. As your character grows throughout this fast-paced FPS, you choose and customize your abilities to suit your style of play.
  • Art Style - The game's distinctive art style combines traditional rendering techniques with hand-drawn textures to paint a bold and eye-catching spin on the FPS genre.
  • Vehicular Combat - Jump behind the wheel and engage in high-speed vehicle-to-vehicle combat, complete with spectacular explosions and road-killed Skags.

4 out of 5 stars A poor man's Fallout 3, but a good one   March 17, 2010
PhilliptheSavior
The whole concept of borderlands is loot-grind-level up. I heard alot of people compare this game with Fallout 3 and really these two games are vastly different, reason being is because fallout 3 is a organic RPG game there are cities and towns, in depth NPCs to interact with and consequences that occur depending on how the player choses to play game. the whole infrastructure of fallout 3's game mechanic has more complexities. With borderlands its just the opposite despite a open world to explore it still is one dimensional for crying out loud the only way you interact with NPCs is reading paragraphs of the mission and jobs they want you to do, Your character is just jumping from mission to mission and has no personality or any say in whats going on.The one aspect I really enjoyed about about fallout was the cause and effect. If you would make a choice that would affect something;somewhere. Borderlands is simply another case of quantity over quality, and theres alot of quantity in terms of all the guns you find, enemies you fight.Theres even online co-op and thats a plus because it gives the game a edge over most Rpg's today which are single player based.
but because of its paper thin plot, and lack of deep gameplay don't expect borderlands to be a memorable experience.

5 out of 5 stars Oh but it's a strained love.   March 17, 2010
Connor Jones (PHOENIXVILLE, PA, US)
This is a multiplayer game through and through.

Would you go on quests alone on WOW? Not if you wanted to have fun...

Now saying that... I am playing this game alone. It's doable! IT'S EVEN LIKEABLE.
so don't run just yet lone gamer. What I will say is that alone this game will feel like it has a really monotonous pace.
But its gratifying at parts, and if you can play it without getting too upset you are rewarded.

Right about at the midpoint of the game there is a funsplosion. The enemies will become a bit more of a challenge and guns will start popping up that are not so run of the mill.
This is where the single player will have his day.

Multi though is the best way for this game to really be experienced. A loot game is fun when people are seeing your advances and advancing with you, when you can drop an Item that you picked up while playing alone that they needed or whatever. Plus characters each have special abilities that benefit multiple players much more than just you alone.

A bit of an explanation:
If you don't know, the game is an RPG shooter. There are 4 characters to choose from, each with different specials and favorite guns (although you can use any gun with any character, it does not box you in). Guns are the name of the game here, with millions of different possibilities to find as you complete quests. You will gain experience and with it the use of higher level guns and abilities. No armor changing or character customization which is a bummer, but you will forget about it. The goal is to quest, loot, find the rarest of the rare, and hopefully work with friends in a group. If that sounds catchy to you, then check it out.

Happy buying

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad game here   March 15, 2010

I bought this game on sheer happenstance with a friend.

logged maybe 10 hours so far, messing around and just getting familiar with it.

At first I thought "well, this sucks, CoD is SO much better" but then i played it online with a friend and i figured out what makes this game fun. it has less to do with the graphics(some cell-shading going on) and more to do with really large envrionments, and team play.

there are 4 classes you can play with, each designed with different weaknesses/strengths, lots of missions. Experience and money, tons of weapons, probably never have the same weapon twice. this game has turned out to be actually, a lot of fun. definite recommend to anyone looking for a FPS/Team FPS, that isn't made by Infinity Ward.

2 out of 5 stars No support for PC   February 27, 2010

This game is fun at first and has a very interesting look to it. However, unless you play multi player it gets old quick.

The publisher offers NO SUPPORT for the PC. You will have to fix it yourself by looking through their message board.

I recommend this game for the console. but STRONGLY advise against purchase for the PC unless you have advanced knowledge about trouble shooting your router settings.

5 out of 5 stars A blast to play.   February 27, 2010

This game is about video games. The haters can go chew on that for a while.
If you have played Serious Sam, then you will have fun here. A game that has a sense of humor along with guns and blood is always a blast. Even the credits were entertaining.

What I liked:

*lots of guns, some of them hard to find or only dropped by bosses.
*good music.
*running over bad guys with your runner is fun.
*using the scorpio turrets (having your enemy use them sucks tho)
*glitch free, rock solid code (PC version here)
*having to balance your gun skills with the ammo available.
*PEW,PEW,PEW. LOL.
*cool art work.
*the rpg/different characters thing. choose wisely.
*Tannis. Geek. Hot. Underwear.
*very immersive.
*clap traps.

What sucked:
*too short.
*the final boss was kind of wimpy.
*need a sequel...

If you like shooters, you must buy this game.
