5 out of 5 stars Beatlemaniac Reborn   March 21, 2010
lonebeaut (land of enchantment)
I'm not exactly a big buyer of music CD's and DVD's, but I made an exception for this one because I'm one of the original Long Island Beatlemaniacs who (almost) went to Shea Stadium to see the Beatles on their first trip here in 1964. I was fourteen when my mother brought home an album called "Introducing the Beatles" with four strange-looking long-haired guys on the cover. I had no idea at that point who they were, and neither did she. She had bought the album because it was on sale.

But by the time the Beatles hit the U.S. just a few months later, everybody knew who they were. I pestered my mother to let me get tickets to the Ed Sullivan show, and since we didn't know exactly what week they'd be on and the Ed Sullivan staff wasn't telling, we got tickets for all four weeks. But instead of the Beatles we ended up with Mickey Rooney and Topo Gigio because we picked the wrong week to travel to the city. Bummer.

As much as I adored the Beatles, especially Paul, I hesitated to go to an actual Beatles concert because I am, well, claustrophobic, and knew I couldn't deal with the screaming hordes who would be there. In the 60s I bought some of the Beatles LPs and taped others, but I kind of lost touch with Paul's career after he struck out on his own. Clearly I should have kept up better, but who knew?

In the early 90s I got my arm twistred by a friend to go with her to a Paul and Linda McCartney concert in Oakland, CA. On our way in from San Francisco on BART, the jam-packed train suddenly lost power in the Transbay Tube and I thought to myself, oh, great, I'm finally going to see my favorite Beatle in person and I'm trapped like a dead sardine in a metal container under water! But we finally got moving again and made it to the Coliseum, where we unfortunately had pretty lousy seats and the acoustics left a lot to be desired. Paul was his usual charming self, but it was, frankly, a musical disappointment.

Recently I watched his "Good Evening NYC" concert at the old Shea site on PBS and enjoyed myself much more than I had in Oakland, so much so that I surprised myself by ordering the CD/DVD set. I plan to listen to/watch them multitudinous times. Macca has aged amazingly well (no doubt partly due to his healthy veggie diet), he's still adorable and witty, and his voice remains strong and versatile. I love that he emphasizes Beatles songs, and he sings them with artistry and enthusiasm and a great back-up band, although his other material ain't bad either (I also bought the latest, very creative Fireman Electric Arguments CD, from which he sang a few songs at the concert). And his musicianship and confidence have grown since the 60s.

I can't recommend this concert package enough. For Baby Boomers or younger who are hooked on Beatles music and/or Paul McCartney, this gives you a lot of both and makes you feel like a Beatlemaniac (or Maccamaniac) all over again.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't have this one, GET it!   March 19, 2010

I've seen Paul in person four times and I have all his concert videos, so I was a bit reluctant to get this one. After all, the setlist varies very little on his shows, so why bother? But, the great price tipped the scales for me, so I said,,"Why Not?" Am I ever glad I did!!! At last, we have a full-length Macca concert on DVD! I was beginning to think it would never happen. Both the video and audio are excellent and the video shot by the audience members really adds to the show. The amateur video is easily distinguishable from the pro footage due to the lower resolution. The highlights for me are "Mrs. Vanderbilt," "Day Tripper," and "Paperback Writer." On the latter, Paul foregoes the Hofner for lead guitar and the jam is great. The jam on "I've Got A Feeling'' is nice, too. I spotted Barbara Walters in the audience during "Calico Skies." It looks like Mayor Bloomberg is with her. Rusty's guitar seems to go out during "Back In The USSR,'' probably amixing problem. The psychedelic Les Paul is cool. Most fans seem to dislike the prevalence of audience shots during most of Paul's concert videos. I like them, myself. This DVD has them, but not nearly as many as usual. They just seem to add to the excitement of a concert. I'll probably never play the CDs from this set. I don't care much for most live CDs, but at this low price, who cares. I just look at them as a bonus. The DVD is what it's all about. Why did Paul stop combing his hair??? It seems he quit about five years ago. What's the deal, Macca? Combs aren't that expensive. I know that YOU can afford one. One more thing, Paul. Narration by Alec Baldwin? I was under the impression he left the country after President Bush's re-election. Now, If Paul would only release my favorite concert on DVD. I'm talking about the June, '93 Fox show. Unless I'm mistaken, it was Linda's last U.S. appearance. I videotaped it off TV, but Fox didn't carry the entire show as the band was live and they kept playing during the commercial breaks. Fox also cut the show short at the end. They began rolling the credits in the middle of "Hey Jude." P.S. Why all the complaints from the customer reviewers about Paul's voice? It sounds strong and natural to me, though not quite up to par on "Let It Be."

I loved the "flash backs" to the first time the Beatles played there that were incorporated into one of the songs!

Great job!

I didn't realize I was getting a package that included the DVD as well as two CD's of the McCartney concerts. I really enjoyed watching the DVD. McCartney is still a great showman and seems to be having a good time. The music is great too. A sing-along fest for Beatlemaniacs!
